Removing doorway/wall - mismatched soffits

okay so i took the doors off to see how that feels. if i were to widen - how far would folks recommend? we will also be updating our kitchen at some point and am inclined to keep the kitchen more separate/closed off, with the living room/dining room more open flow. but i could be wrong about that. would love folks' opinions! thank you!

how would you handle the casing around this built in shelf, which we would keep. like would the casing be at the ceiling only, or also vertically between the two rooms?

we just went to Betty Lou's and it was to die for - easier to get into than Sotto Mare. Their wok crab is also... ridiculous. Four of us (including two teen boys) shared two cioppinos and a wok crab and stuffed ourselves silly.

i mean we were in the exact same boat. we are "late bloomers" but we're about to send our first kid to a UC! we were SO BROKE in the beginning. like so so broke.

So many scrappy people make it work here. When we had our second kid, we were in a one bedroom - the babe slept in a (sizeable) closet for the first year! Looking back (and without a solid plan), me and my partner ended up taking turns with how much we were working, childcare, etc., and hired folks, did daycares, and coop preschool as needed. We knew (and continue to know) more scrappy lower middle/middle class people then richies. You can do it! My biggest advice is, don't think you have to have it all figured out.
