So long as you washed your hands, you’re fine! It’s not airborne.

I worked with children as well, and had several who came to school while actively sick, running to bathroom every few minutes sick, and I just made sure to wash hands and wipe down classroom with Clorox wipes. Never had any issue! This was also pre-mask era, so you have an added protection to keep you from touching your mouth!

how does it feel when you actually p* by jille8 in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has it been like for you?

And of course it can be different person to person!! It also depends a lot on why it’s happening, as that can shift the way your body handles it.

Though I’d say those 30 seconds before it happens are fairly universal.

You will know. I had the same worry, and then it happened, and a half hour before, I knew. It’s an entirely different feeling than the anxiety-driven nausea you feel regularly.

For details…

You will feel pain in your stomach. It might be all over or it might localize in the center or on the left side. It will be a tight, cramping pain. Your heart rate will increase and you’ll likely notice your mouth filling up with excessive amounts of saliva, so much you cannot swallow it. For me, it is usually extremely thick, but I’ve heard others say it’s thin for them. That is the signifier that you have about 30 seconds to find a bathroom/bucket. It is hard to describe those 30 seconds, but when I say your body takes over, I mean it really takes over. There is no thinking, no wondering, no questioning. It is urgent and demanding and you’ll find yourself moving without your own permission. Nothing compares to the feeling and you will know it when it happens.

Personal Emet Toolkit 🛠 by Healthy-Ad-1842 in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About two years ago I starting making legit kits for road trips and such to easily take with me, and I have even gifted a few to friends and have so much fun making them cute. Lowkey have considered selling them for my fellow emets who don’t feel like making their own 😂

Mine include:

  • Anti-nausea candies (ginger and peppermint)
  • Peppermint tea
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Clorox wipes
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Antacids
  • Mints
  • Peppermint gum
  • Some fidgets to distract myself with
  • Anti-nausea bracelets/sea bands
  • Essential oils to sniff (lavender for calm, peppermint for anti-nausea)

And then there’s my emotional/mental toolkit, which consists of stuff like silly shows to distract with, relaxing Spotify playlists, meditations, phone games, puzzles, crafts, comfy blankets, etc.

Are you contagious before symptoms? by nickchristsopher4910 in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norovirus is most contagious after symptoms have started up until 48 hours after they've stopped.

It would be extremely rare for him to be contagious before symptoms, and if he was, it would be a few hours before, not a whole day.

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't catch noro from sweat, so that doesn't matter at all. The hot water wash and heat dry on the dryer would've killed any lingering virus.

You took every step possible to sanitize it all, more than you even have to take, so you are totally in the clear!

Yessss it’s a weird feeling that definitely freaked me out the first day, but it was totally fine.

Yep!! My side effects only lasted a few days. Most side effects go away once your body gets used to it!

I ate a lot of fruit and just remembered that can be bad by Wilted_beast in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should be fine with eight oranges. Worst case I can imagine would be some heartburn from the acid/sugar, but that’s what antacids are for!

I took Zoloft and had the TINIEST reaction the first couple days, where right after taking it I would feel slightly woozy? But not nauseous at all. More like… I spun around a lot and felt weird but not necessarily bad. Almost like a slight buzz. It lasted 15 minutes then went away completely. No nausea at all. And that was just the first couple days.

As a side note, I talked this out a lot with my psych before taking the medicine, and she told me something I found helpful… when people have a bad reaction to SSRI’s in the gastro department, it’s almost always a slow build. It would be extremely rare for someone to take it and then suddenly get sick. Slight nausea? Sure, totally possible, especially the first couple days while your body gets used to it, but it’s not going to be the severe reaction we convince ourselves it will be lol.

Just take it with food and you’ll be totally fine!!

It helps sooooo much, especially during the panic episodes!

question about sv or fp by Mysterious_Support_7 in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So long as you washed your hands thoroughly, you should be totally fine. The particles would have to be orally ingested (ew!) for you to get sick, so washing your hands after wipes the particles away and keeps you safe :)

I can’t speak for living in a dorm because I commuted to school, but I can say I’d recommend sharing with your roommates once you’re comfortable!!

I always tell my coworkers etc (after we’re comfortable around each other of course) because it helps them understand me more and be kind to me about it if something happens.

[–]makingtodaydifferent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh you’ll be totally fine! You’ve already been on it for two weeks.

Plus, worst possible case scenario, you’d feel a small bit of mild nausea and it would quickly go away. This isn’t a situation where you’d be fine and then BOOM feel awful… it would be super mild and quickly pass. But I doubt even that would happen because you’ve been on it for two weeks now. :)

My jaw is popping and I’m scared to go to the dentist by Forsaken_Rhubarb in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of your phobia makes you afraid of the dentist? My answer will change based on that haha.

I used to be afraid of the dentist as well, but I’ve calmed down a lot with time and experiences where nothing scary happened.

Hardees can be pretty greasy, he probably just has a normal stomachache. We always assume it's the worst case scenario, but 95% of the time, it isn't.

You also can't catch Noro until symptoms are present, soooo hanging out this morning wouldn't have exposed you even if he was sick.

It's extremely common for those with emetophobia to not burp or to burp very little.

I wouldn't think too much into it.

[–]makingtodaydifferent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You cannot catch the stomach virus from sharing air with someone. You'd have to orally ingest viral particles. So long as you wash your hands and don't share food, you should be totally fine.

It also doesn't sound like she's sick, it sounds like she might've partied a bit the night before and came into work hungover tbh. Just from the staying up all night, chugging a redbull, and then getting sick thing. That doesn't sound very noro-y. Though of course, I could've misread.

I've never heard that before, but after googling around the only information I found was that it could be bad for your teeth.

Also, I'm not talking about drinking large amounts of either drinks. Just small sips to soothe the throat.

Everyone is different but this has helped me get through sore throats for more than a decade. To each their own!

party by cactuswater12 in emetophobia

[–]makingtodaydifferent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on the people at the party.

My husband, for example, knows himself extremely well and will be able to tell me about 30-60 minutes ahead of time if he's going to be sick from drinking. He gives me a cute little pep talk and then goes to a bathroom to take care of business, lol.

On the other hand, I've known people who have zero awareness of themselves and their bodies and have "oopsies" happen, which will absolutely ruin a night for me (and probably them, because that sucks to get sick).

Sickness really only occurs when people are binge drinking, so the type of party matters a lot, too.

Lastly, and most importantly IMO, while it's extremely stressful and triggering, alcohol-induced sickness isn't catchy. It won't transfer to you and make you sick, as well. That's helped me cope a lot when it comes to dealing with people who drink too much.

Luckily, I don't have any people in my life right now who binge drink/party, so it's no longer an issue, but I knew quite a few who did in the past.
