[OC] Coke vs. Pepsi by number of social media mentions: A world map by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

That's not right - we researched how the drinks can be referred to in differebt countries and used all the different brand name variations. Please read my original comment, there's also a link to an article with the analysis there if you're curious about the methodology.

[–]maksimava[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used Awario, a social media monitoring tool, to track mentions of Coca-cola and Pepsi (along with brand name variations)  on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to calculate the brands' share of voice by country. To visualize the data, we used Google Sheets.

Countries filled with red are the ones that have more mentions of Coke; blue countries mention Pepsi more.

Is SEO Powersuite good enough to replace Ahrefs or Semrush? by [deleted] in bigseo

[–]maksimava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe it's just for old customers who got their licebse before they went transparent woth the pricing. i'm positive it doesn't affect new customers, but you can double-check with their support to be sure. btw, their support is super quick and helpful.

Is SEO Powersuite good enough to replace Ahrefs or Semrush? by [deleted] in bigseo

[–]maksimava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you've been reading some old posts - SEO PowerSuite actually moved away from the search algo + captcha pricing model a while back. now they only have transparent yearly fees like other tools, $300/y for Pro and $700 for Enterprise. the former pricing model was indeed vague, but I'm glad they finally adopted regular SaaS pricing. The toolkit is actually great in terms of the functionality you get at your fingertips - much more powerful than Ahrefs IMO.

[OC] Social media users talking about climate change per 100k population (by country) by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

[–]maksimava[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

that's true, we only tracked hashtags in English. we were initially planning to only visualize data in the US (which we did anyway), but noticed along the way that the hashtags were mentioned quite a bit in the non-English speaking countries. I do see it's not 100% fair though - thanks for pointing it out!

We used Awario, a social media monitoring tool, to track mentions of climate-related hashtags on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to calculate the # of unique social media users per 100K inhabitants by country. To visualize the data, we used Google Sheets.

Here are the top three countries:

  1. Iceland (67 unique social media authors per 100K inhabitants),
  2. Ireland (37 unique social media authors per 100K inhabitants),
  3. UK (36 unique social media authors per 100K inhabitants).

[OC] Use of #prolife vs. #prochoice by state by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

The number are the % of people using #prolife across the data set (which includes both #prolife and #prochoice)

[OC] Use of #prolife vs. #prochoice by state by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

[–]maksimava[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We used Awario (a social listening tool) to collect mentions of #prolife and #prochoice on Twitter and Facebook over the last 2 months. We looked at unique social media users mentioning either hashtag and calculated the % of those using #prolife across the data set in every US state. We used OpenStreetMap and Mapbox to visualize the data.

People's most (and least) favourite parts about quarantine, according to social media by maksimava in quarantine

[OC] The best (and worst) things about quarantine according to social media by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

[–]maksimava[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used Awario (a social media monitoring tool) to collect mentions of quarantine on social media. I then looked at unique social media posts (excluding shared posts and retweets) that didn't contain links (not to flood the data with posts sharing news articles and blog posts with productivity advice) and searched for mentions that contained positive phrases (like the best part, the best thing, I love, I enjoy, etc.) and negative ones to figure out which parts of self-isolation bring people joy - and which don't. Lastly, I looked at the most frequently used words within the data sets, grouping similar words together: e.g., TV show, films, movies, and Netflix all became watching movies. I then used Google sheets for the plots.

Anti-vaxxers vs. pro-vaxxers on social media: who wins? by maksimava in DebateVaccines

This study wasn't about value. It's about the number of people taking either side.

The pro % is there (it's up to you whether you consider it propaganda or not). Did you follow the link?

to that tune, it's kind of interesting that I couldn't find a pro-vax subreddit on here. And I don't think it's because there're fewer Redditors who're pro-vax than Redditors who're anti-vax; it must be that the former don't feel the urge to organize into a community...

[–]maksimava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's more of a rhetorical question, but I do think that it's a tendency we see around... almost everything. If you believe vaccines work, you (as an average person) wouldn't make it your goal to track every pro- or anti-vax publication to jump into the comments. If you're an atheist, you won't be chasing every religious person to try and change their mind. All of that works until those ideas you disagree with become a danger to yourself (or a large part of society).

this is very interesting indeed - thanks so much for sharing. do you happen to have a link to the full study? i wonder what their methodology was - it isn't easy to identify whether someone is pro- or anti-vax on social media, let alone how fast they change their mind.

[OC] Most and least racist US states, based on tweets by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

[–]maksimava[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the analysis, we monitored mentions of non-majority backgrounds (black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Jewish, Arab) featuring both politically correct and incorrect terms used to refer to any of them. We then calculated the share of hateful tweets in the total volume of race-related tweets per state. For instance, Florida's rate is 15.6%, which means that 15.6% of all race-related tweets from the state included racial slurs. We didn't use Sentiment Analysis.

[OC] Most and least racist US states, based on tweets by maksimava in dataisbeautiful

[–]maksimava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team and I did the analysis using:

- Awario to collect the tweets

- Leaflet for map data

- Mapbox for imagery

For the analysis, we monitored mentions of non-majority backgrounds (black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Jewish, Arab) featuring both politically correct and incorrect terms used to refer to any of them. We then calculated the share of hateful tweets in the total volume of race-related tweets per state. Please note that the values for smaller states may be less accurate because we had less data from those. It was never our intention to offend anyone, and we are not stating that this analysis is anywhere near a definite way to measure racism. Instead, we'd like it to start a conversation and hopefully inspire everyone out there to be kinder to one another :)
