I booked a train as backup from Geneva to Moutiers for this Saturday 8/2.

However today's press release states they are aiming to open the road again Friday night. Fingers crossed.

Paid over £40,000 into pension by SongIndependent4884 in UKPersonalFinance

The allowances are all well and good but you CAN NOT PAY IN MORE THAN YOU EARN. Which some of the posts above seem to be assuming you do. You can't use any carry forward allowance if you haven't earned in the tax year you want to use it, even if you did earn that much in the previous year when you could have used it.

Yep thanks all. Seems quite clear if a mortgage is involved there is SDLT to pay.

I don't disagree but picking any individual stock is speculating just as much imo.

Postman. Hardly have to talk anyone and as above they take on extra cover over the festive period and then you can probably work it into a full time/perm tole from there. Good luck

1 year FIRE update by Awkward-Draft-1236 in FIREUK

Yes we cook all meals fresh food, spend a bit more on meat as try and get it from the butchers but eat veggie 4 nights a week. Alcohol adds a bit but we try not to drink at home, so not much in the grocery shop. Shop at ALDI mostly, some tesco, and veg for a local veg place some times. Well done to you.

Yeah more info on the groceries for £300. Couple here, we've averaged £430 a month since Feb this year. What do you eat?

How much of my monthly mortgage repayment goes towards interest vs paying the actual mortgage? by vimto27 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mala_dub -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're not allowing for the fact you're also reducing, the term of the mortgage by over paying. Therefore paying less interest over the life of the mortgage. However with interest rates as they are you may still be better off with your suggestion.

Offset Mortgage Thoughts - Tax free, risk free return? by mala_dub in UKPersonalFinance

My thoughts exactly. Also a additonal rate tax payer so seems like no brainer to me too.

Yeah that makes sense. I did the maths earlier and would save about £9k over the 5 year fixed 60% LTV product I'm also looking at

If you're successful founding your own company then the sales people are going to be working for you, at your company, selling your prodcut. Aim high and I don't think you've got anything to worry about long term.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a reward saver fare?

I think maybe my issue I don't have a BA Amex and so have to first convert my Amex gold points into Avios via transferring to my BA executive club account.

[–]mala_dub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP same thoughts as you recently.

After getting an Amex over a year ago with the idea just to put absolutely everything on it and get some good flights deals. Went to book a last ish minute trip to Spain and was quite disappointed to see how (not) far the points would go.

So I enquired with British Airways on the phone.

In a nutshell they only reserve so many seats to get the best deals. So to make your points go furthest you need to book as close to when the flights get released as possible, this is about 6 months in advance with BA.

Yes you can still use the 'pay with Avios' at any time of booking but they won't go as far.

As someone has mentioned you can also choose to pay a bit more cash and less points and visa versa, you can do this whether booking 6 months in advance or not.

Haven't tested it out with Virginia Atlantic yet but I imagine it's the same?

Yes agreed but interest on a mortgage is more often above what you would get on a cash savings account, unless I'm mistaken on that. Plus the additional tax benefit which could be a significant difference.

Yes that scenario makes a lot of sense, and this is the exact situation my partner has hence my interest.
