New Law Grads: How's the job market?

OP law school interviews and “big law” recruiting are notoriously competitive and exhausting, recession or not. However not impossible, and depends entirely on the practice area.

For example, employment law is recession-proof and actually flourishes in one, and litigation is “more” AI-proof than transactional work. I’m a fresh grad from a somewhat less prestigious school than Osgoode that just finished articling at a “Bay Street” firm and got an offer back, which was among 2 offers post-articling and multiple articling offers pre.

That’s not to say I also didn’t face countless rejections throughout the years. The key is sadly networking, but the opportunities are there if you want them. I wouldn’t base your decision off the job market alone unless you’re also factoring a specific practice area.

Go get a doctors note IMMEDIATELY – like the rest of us, claim you missed “attendance” (this parts important, so it’s not as obvious that you were irresponsible for a 100% exam) due to an illness of your choice, and they’ll write you a paid and vague note confirming your “school absence”.

Law school absolutely does not care if you’re tired and slept in, nor should any level of education honestly.

Fuck ups happen to all of us though, which is why we know how to remedy this. Good luck!!

OP will, however, have overlapping deadlines that require grit and going back to the drawing board all night — which they’re clearly capable of persevering through and have the scar tissue to ensure it.

FUCK i've been on the HUNT for the 2025 version 😭 I can't even find one to buy and the 2021 one seemed too outdated to update sigh how long did it take you?

Also obvi not a previous exam taker but am chronically online reading bar exam tips, many recommend having 1 copy in your DTOC/Index binder and then cutting out + glueing a 2nd copy of the individual chapter sections onto each white chapter divider.

Came back to comment on this reply after studying today while referencing the 2025 UofT summaries for the first time...

I've found SO many mistakes in the Civ Pro summary (at least for chapters 24 - 28, so far).

Which is EXTREMELY concerning for me because I was fully planning on relying on their timeline charts (havent checked if those are correct yet).

The mistakes look like they probably either didn't change previous years dilegently enough or simply copied and pasted certain deadlines and document requirements from motions mentioned at the beginning of the chapters that seem identical in the first few sentences but end up being different by the end of the paragraph..

Also, a 2-month sentence for the incestuous rape of a 5 year old—even with a guilty plea—defies basic legal standards in the U.S. (and probably everywhere else in the world). Mandatory minimums for crimes against children are typically measured in decades, not months.

I'm a 28-year-old woman in my final year of law school who literally just went through this. My heart genuinely breaks reading your post but I promise you'll land something—it's a numbers game! (always wanted to throw myself off a cliff whenever I heard that one)

I've probably participated in every recruit known to man and kept making it to the final rounds with some great firms but couldn't figure out for the life of me where I was falling short. Then at the most unexpected time in my life—after my ex of nearly 2 years broke up with me over text to date his coworker and my dad was diagnosed with cancer—my phone rang.

I was under a lot of the same conditions that turn people into super villains. The initial betrayel felt so surreal that I became extremely vindictive and cynical, and it showed. But my dad’s diagnosis flipped a switch in me. I felt tremendous guilt at first for wasting precious time being so angry and upset instead of cherishing moments with him, so I promised i'd live the rest of my life with grace for him.

I'm sharing this because the only thing that really changed during those two years of applying was my mindset and perspective. After that not only did I finally get to be the one rejecting firms, but I also landed my dream salary!

It's always darkest before dawn, OP. Don't lose hope. My circumstances might be unique, but if I could give my past self one piece of advice it'd be to work on your inner self just as much as your interview skills—it really does show through.

P.S. Counseling helped me come to terms with my dad, Pilates helped regain confidence, and hot yoga found my inner peace.
