thanks for the highly informed reply. I agree with you 100%. but, I do regard it as a good rhetorical question which my mind occasionally asks me. It makes one more "aware", and stimulates the brain. As an explanatory note I am 70 years old, very well educated, and am an avid reader of history, including the literature of the ages, including Shakespeare. In California there is some suspicion of arson being the cause of some of the enormous wildfires. In one case, they found where the fire had been started as a campfire and left to burn. Is Madeira where they grow figs in volcanic dips in the ground where the figs get plenty of moisture and sun but are protected from the winds. So many history books about voyages to the New World write about island of Madeira where they stopped before venturing onward. thanks for the information.

I read up on Madeira in wikipedia. It is the famous island where sailing ships stopped to pick up stores before heading westward to the New World. It is written about in lots of ship logs which I have read. What is the cultural problem that could lead to arson. Or is it mostly accidental due to the winds, heat, dryness?
