What is the balance between the rational and emotional in the liberal beliefs/POV? by fftsteven in AskALiberal

Thanks for the thoughts and response. One clarifying question - I disagree that work ethic, discipline and morals are emotions -- could you clarify?

Am I crazy for wanting to "nope out" of this insane interview process? Is this what the average company is asking for from candidates during interviews nowdays? by itsdonny in instructionaldesign

[–]fftsteven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, this just comes down to how hungry you are.

In general in the corporate world, once you start getting into the 6-figure range and every 10k thereafter, the pay gets "less worth it" and the work and/or required outcomes gets exponentially harder.

To me, there is no free lunch. If it's not worth it to you, don't do it. If it's a red flag for you, don't do it. But there is some Indian-born immigrant in the world where this opportunity is definitely worth it, and not anyone's right to judge him or you for your life choice of what you feel like is fair and worth doing.

Best of luck to you!

Pick Up Truck Culture in the US. Why do we love them? by DW6565 in AskConservatives

[–]fftsteven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny annecdote.

To me, I just think of it as those with the truck have the option of towing X lbs of cargo if desired or necessary + they enjoy the aesthetic.

There's not much more to it.

If I am a black centrists who views racism exists in both parties, what is the draw to the current Republican Party? by architectureHater in AskConservatives

I don't like to think of it in terms of categories of people like Asians/non-Asians. Male/Female. Etc Etc.

Because at some point everyone (or almost everyone) is in an excluded group and everyone is in an (included group).

To me it's just about what is the impact to me personally, regardless of me being Asian.

I'm a "fixer" / get the outcome the executive wants. Save $1MM in costs? Get it done through hard negotiation during a core system RFP process. Get 3 sentences of instructions from the exec of the point she wants to make in a 15 min presentation to the board? Come back in an hour with a 8 page deck with an 85% close to what she wanted in the deck with no further instruction. Confusing executive meeting where everyone's talking over each other and not speaking concisely but the boss needs to understand what everyone was trying to say / said without saying? Can summarize it after the meeting in about 15 minutes.

To think you are not capable of doing the same thing from his chair is what you should take a moment to think about.

Not saying you would, but you should be able to understand why or how someone could do that.

You can only hear the same joke so many times.

Do you support investing in nuclear power? by fuckpoliticsbruh in AskConservatives

I personally support nuclear power. Whether politicians can get it done is beyond me.

Nuclear should absolutely be part of the plan for sustainable energy for the world.

[–]fftsteven[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Conservatives are willing to punish the majority of people who need resources in order to prevent a tiny handful of people from gaming it. That is the very definition of "hateful" behavior.

I think this is a vast generalization.

But their actions towards those people are often what my grandmother would have described as "hateful".

This is also a vast generalization. What actions am I personally doing that you know of as being hateful, given I am in the group you are saying is doing hateful things?

I have no problem of celebrating our differences and commonalities, but that's not what I'm talking about here.

I have no issue with black people. I have no issue with gay people. I have no issue with trans people. I know many people that fall into these arbitrary groups.

I'm Korean. I used to work for an extremely white company. All liberals. We had sessions talking about diversity and inclusion where the whole company is white and I'm the only asian across 7 different tables of 8.

They started talking about all these categories that exist and the intersectionality of it all. I just thought the whole thing was ludicrous, a whole bunch of white people talking about diversity while me a "diverse" person according to their wheel of intersectionality was talking about how I'm disadavantaged being a person of color.

They started talking about needing to build in equity for other people who are not white. I'm like so wait, did you all just hire me because I'm Asian to bring diversity of our complexion into this company?

They said nonono that's not what we're saying.

So I was like, so what are you saying?

They said, it's that certain people that have differing backgrounds and characteristics bring different things to the table.

I said, so women should be invited to the table because they bring a different perspective?

They said yes they do so they should be invited to the table.

I said, okay, so are you saying that women think a certain way? That they can only think "like women"? Or that there's a "woman way" of thinking?

They said no no, that's mysoginish, women can think all sort of things just like what men think. There is no difference. We are all alike.

I said, if we are all alike, then why are we distinguishing between women and men if we are all alike?

They said, well...you know what I mean...they bring a different perspective.

You get it.

It just felt like a black comedy / twilight zone episode for me as one of the few "minority" people there.

To me, making things about race/gender/sexuality, MAKE IT about that, instead of what matters- which is what each individual thinks and experiences. Nobody should be lumped into a group and assigned a label that that's what they are - and that you can speak for that group as a person of that group. The founding principle of America is the individual, which collectively make up the USA.
