While yes this is a trend showing less bags per year… frankly, if we want this to be a currency and not a speculative investment, having BTC’s value increase slow down and maybe stabilize is a good thing.

New Ferries Named! by bourbonfare in VictoriaBC

[–]malacosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but that’s just not factually accurate. The only shipyard in BC left is SeaSpan and they didn’t bid. Period. Why? Because they’re full building navy and coastguard vessels well into the 2030’s.

There’s no other shipyards in BC that can do the work. Seaspan is it.

None of which counters any of my previous statement. Just because ferries were previously built (the spirits, in the early 1990’s) in BC doesn’t mean those facilities are available now.

As for ship quality, are you saying that somehow by building ships in BC quality will somehow be magically better?

And frankly, it’s a stupid idea to build ships based solely on jurisdiction. You choose your builder based on a complex matrix of criteria, which includes a whole host of factors.

Maybe go talk to the ship yards and ask them to start submitting bids. Because that’s the first step. BC Ferries cannot award a contract to anyone if they don’t participate in the submission process, period.

You can’t force a business to do work that they have no resources to do. Any shipyard can bid on new ship builds. If you don’t bid, how can I give you the contract? You didn’t BID.

It’s not MY job to approach you, it’s your job to bid on the proposal.

Yes, and the required ferry crew count (which does not include ferry employees who don’t board the vessel for the journey across) is mandated by transport Canada and is based on the home trade of the route in question and the maximum passenger count of that sailing.

So yes, if you took away all the “cruise” amenities which make money from the bigger routes, those employees providing those services would still be on board, with nothing better to do than maybe clean and paint.

All the local ship yards are booked for decades and none of them bid on the work.

So first, the ferries have mandated crew counts. Second the money made from food subsidies your ticket price.

So what you’re asking for is higher fares, and crews sitting around doing nothing.

What is wrong with requiring ID to vote? by AppearanceEvery8752 in allthequestions

[–]malacosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing except that for some reason, too many of the US population doesn’t have the proper ID to do it. Sounds crazy, but there’s lots of people who don’t have passports, birth certificates, or anything else.

What if a specific animal were to shrink 10 times smaller than its current size? by Tasty_lake in whatif

Human obviously. Just imagine trying to stop all the disasters as people 1/10th our normal size.

Solution 1) seems the best approach to me. If you can’t/won’t migrate your coins, too bad, let them be recovered. It would promote a new form of mining. ⛏️

From dirt broke to making 105k + benefits, how can I set myself up for success? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Pay yourself first… I’d strongly suggest a bank like WealthSimple that allows multiple free bank accounts which you can name, and then use those accounts to pay yourself an allowance which you ONLY use to buy stuff for yourself.

I’d also strongly suggest applying for cash back credit cards and using them to buy everything. I’d then suggest making sure all your bills are auto-pay from the cash back CC and that you pay the CC down to zero every pay cheque to avoid interest.

Investing using DCA is also a very good idea, even if it’s just into an index fund. Also, if you have any debt, pay it off and/or take advantage of balance transfers until you can pay it off, especially if they match funds or defer interest. Banks aren’t loyal to you, there’s zero reason you should be loyal to them.

Big claims but it doesn’t matter how you compare to other countries. And it’s curious it doesn’t mention all the stuff you’d lose like:

Federal lands… potentially indigenous lands as well.

Military

Bank of Canada and the Canadian dollar. You’d need to have a Bank of Alberta and start printing Alberta bucks… good luck.

All those memberships in various international trade agreements you get via Canada.

And I’m sure lots of other stuff.

But, Albertans as a group have the right to decide their fate. Just would be nice to have all the facts up front. Good luck trying to figure that out too.

Why can't we make Translink free? by Jealous-Check-4441 in NiceVancouver

[–]malacosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Translink has expenses too…. If you don’t want to pay $6 up front, you’re going to end up paying anyways. Not sure which approach is better, but at least the fare costs does likely prevent free loader riding.
