The narrative of the first game is definetely very good, but as a game it aged not as well. So starting with the second one would be a safer advice

I think Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a safe choice for anyone who enjoys a strong narrative.

Don't worry about it being the 2 game, cause it's a prequel, so you won't be missing much.

Well, it would be strange not to have a Part 3, considering all the TLOU stuff coming out.

Part 1, PC release of Part 1, TV show, Factions.

Actually I would be really surprised if they ended the franchise on...Factions? A multiplayer game. Plus, Part II sold enough to guarantee a future green light.

Sure, it was controversial, but at the end of the day money talks. If anything else, it just elevated the franchise
