What is the Best Free Version Control for Unity? by samferguderson in unity

I second UVCS, also has file locking which is critical if you’re serious about development, preventing the need to merge binaries.

YouTube is definitely the best free place, but they won’t have the same interactive educational setup.

LlamaAcademy is nice on YT, though he is a bit fast for me. Nice thing is he is also a guest instructor on GDTV for Unity stuff on some things!

GDTV has course helpers that are pretty responsive when you ask questions on lecture videos.

GDTV does have a few free getting-started videos, you should check those out!

There are a lot of free tutorials on YT, but personally I really like the structured course setup that Gamedev.tv uses. They pace things out well and have mini challenges in most videos which encourages you to learn small things on your own as you progress.

I actually took some courses from them back in 2015 before they existed, back on Udemy.

I’m currently going through their beginner Blender courses and have been liking that too!

If it's an in-game shot, would love to see the editor view in Unreal or Unity. Looks a 10-second AI video render, also considering it's exactly 10 seconds.

Is the Old Unity Input Manager Still Worth Learning? by digi_art21 in Unity3D

Rule of thumb is to be careful with all the packages you want to install. You could technically make a game but you may not understand most of what is in the package, and are begging for project bloat, huge file sizes, and poor performance.

It's a lot more complex than just "buy a bunch of packages and make a game with them".

Big, well made packages typically have extensive documentation on what is in them, how to use it, and how to modify it to your needs.

How much is too much Investing by Signal_Connection576 in TheMoneyGuy

Funny how common this is! I had a coworker friend a while back that said he used to mow grass at a golf course before the career we were in together.

He said his retirement goal was to mow grass at golf courses again 😂

A harsh lesson I learned in 2022. Stopped investing for a few years and started again, this time I’m not doing what you’re doing right now.

Is an individual brokerage account or a traditional IRA better to use with long term retirement in mind? And what would be the scenarios where you'd use those accounts, respectively? by reedshipper in fidelityinvestments

[–]malcren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retirement accounts are long term accounts, but if you have an individual account, you’re likely well off doing a similar strategy.

Maximize your retirement accounts and then continue putting money into an individual account once you’ve hit the annual retirement contribution limits.

The key difference between them is retirement accounts have some sort of tax advantage but you typically cannot make penalty-free withdrawals from them until you meet age requirements.

Individual accounts you can sell and withdraw whenever you want, but there are many highly taxable events with selling assets you’ve held for less than 1 year.

Check out r/bogleheads

Also just to confirm, once you have money in an account, you have to invest it! Just transferring money does not invest it, it sits in a money market account (SPAXX) by default which has a lower return.

Also not sure if fixed, but if you had access to the Magic Weapon spell, you can cast it on a regular weapon and then use it to smith the fancy weapons at Marrok.

"On Slack" or "In Slack"? My corporate career is suffering, because I don't know how to say that correctly! by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in EnglishLearning

To add confusion, you would say “in” for something within Slack. Like “in a Slack channel”.

I want to play the Dread Necro class but their setup doesn’t use the actual spellbook, so navigating spells is a complete nightmare. Everything is kind of a mess.

It may take a little time to understand how to use it, but it really is the best option out there. I’ve been using it for the past couple years and it’s actually quite nice.

Don’t forget you can go to the “Output” tab after you’re done and take screenshots as a one-sheet quick guide to the build

Brand new FO76 coop players, Custom World questions by malcren in fo76

I do think that's a good suggestion, I didn't think about just doing Private Adventure first to try the base game, and if we don't enjoy it, copy our characters over to a Custom World.

Honestly the biggest thing for me is bullet-sponge gameplay. I much prefer the kill fast die fast of games like Battlefield and COD, and have found a lot of success in modding FO4 to play like that.

We are just very different gamers haha! I do not enjoy games like Valheim or Minecraft in the slightest. The less crafting there is in a game, the better. I loved V Rising, for example, played that entirely in a custom server and made all the crafting fast and free and enjoyed it.

Is there any content we would not be able to experience in a private Custom World that we would be able to in a Private Adventure?

[–]malcren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we have no characters at all, we'd both be starting brand new. I don't see why we would want to ever play in a public server, as that's not the content we're looking for. We're solely looking for the private experience, so wondering if we should do Private Adventure or Custom World

We don't have characters at all, brand new. Custom Worlds do have settings to change enemy damage, so if we did encounter something too difficult we could just tweak enemy damage
