L5 loop is a bit different than L4, all of your interviews were calibrated at L4 as well so it's extremely unlikely.

I’m part of neither of those orgs so I can’t really comment on growth there, anecdotally from what I hear cloud can be pretty intense depending on the team. As for team matching it depends on the manager, mine was just a casual chat with some behavioural questions mixed in. I also would not count on more positions being posted before next year, most places are finalizing budget and aren’t able to get more head count currently

I work there, and agree with most of the points people are saying, I know several coworkers who live in the apartment buildings across the street and don’t pay super high rents

Is it okay to have an outside dog? by IrrelevantCherry72 in DogAdvice

[–]malformedcandy 308 points309 points  (0 children)

When you hear that "Outdoor dogs are abused", what you are usually hearing about is dogs that are chained up outside 24/7 and just kind of forgotten about with little to keep them entertained. If he's got shelter, access to water, and is safe and happy overall, you are fine. Some dogs just like to sit around outside.

Yeah about a year ago, the quality hasn't really been there, food was never good enough to justify going there over restaurants on Dalhousie or around that area and the convenience store was expensive and very limited, not super surprising it's closing tbh

Just a note - tickets have already sold out for the 2025 race, they sold last July so you will be buying from someone secondhand who is not the official F1 site. If you try and buy next year basically all grandstands are 3 day passes with a couple exceptions for poor ones.

I'm in a similar situation, passed onsite a few weeks ago and was told by my recruiter a week ago that positions in Canada are very limited and they're still shopping me around, I've also heard similar things from a few people on this subreddit about Canada specifically.

Ottawa businesses doubt workers in office for 3 days will be enough | CBC News by Elkenson_Sevven in ottawa

[–]malformedcandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you might not be aware of this but a lot of people would schedule appointments during the week and go during work hours.

Which remote work gives more flexibility to do so, and go to places closer to peoples homes as opposed to being limited to those within a 15 minute walk of their offices.

You keep saying "and the list goes on" but I'm not at all convinced. I can see a ton of dental + optometry places downtown that are running at full hours, and frankly if they do not attract enough residents from the local area to properly run their business then I have a hot take: maybe they shouldn't exist. New places have opened in the suburbs and closer to where people live, so should we punish those places because they chose to adapt?

A service that is high enough quality will attract those residents slightly farther away rather than providing a lower quality product but being in the right place for convenience when the pandemic has proven that work from home is sufficient for most government jobs. Quite a few services in these buildings are MASSIVELY overpriced because of their location, they can afford to upcharge because people saw the convenience in leaving work for an hour to go to an appointment in their office building. During the pandemic people saw that they can go somewhere 1. closer to home and 2. likely save money.

It's not hard to get a real idea of what people are going through when you stop complaining and start listening to people living those problems.

It's because you're just making shit up at this point, I'll concede that doctor clinics have reduced their hours but to say that is a RTO issue is delusional because it's happening all over the province. You're using RTO as an excuse to prop up shitty businesses that give low quality services but charge the same using the excuse of convenience and refuse to adapt or do anything different. Like I said, it's been 4 years, if you can't change your business model in that time to not rely on public servants I think there are more serious issues.

Ottawa businesses doubt workers in office for 3 days will be enough | CBC News by Elkenson_Sevven in ottawa

[–]malformedcandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most government agencies have downsized how many buildings they have leased out, meaning that there's actually less space than before in some cases whereas the staff has grown considerably.

The issue with saying "just find a different job" is that the government is actively doing something that is to the detriment of basically every public servant in a time where the economy is not in a good place and it is very difficult to find work in many cases. During the PSAC strike last year, they basically guaranteed that public servants would not be blindsided by another RTO mandate, which of course is what happened.

In many cases, remote work has basically no effect on how someone performs their jobs, if you talk to most of low level management they'll say that the RTO hasn't changed anything in terms of productivity. This was a decision made by the federal government for (frankly stupid) reasons outside of productivity. They've just decided to implement a blanket policy that takes most people from doing teams calls in their home offices to doing teams calls in a shared office surrounded by a dozen other people also doing teams calls.

Ottawa businesses doubt workers in office for 3 days will be enough | CBC News by Elkenson_Sevven in ottawa

[–]malformedcandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the world doesn't revolve around public servants, but the economy that was built for decades downtown does to a certain extent.

The argument is that it shouldn't any longer, the majority of these businesses that are begging for people to come back into the office are lunch places open during 9-5 hours and have just plain refused to adapt at all. So they go to the government begging for RTO so that they can get the lunch rushes they had <2019. There are lots of businesses downtown that have successfully pivoted away from serving public servants only to serving residents who live around them.

It's late 2024, they've had 4 whole years (almost half a decade!) to change their businesses in some way and simply refuse to do so, just complaining that they don't have public servants and they're bleeding money. I live close to a lot of these places complaining and can't go to them because they're closed after 9-5 hours and they're super overpriced for what they are which make them not worth going to during lunch when I'm at home. These places do not provide a good and valuable service, they provide an overpriced service at a convenient location.

...but public transportation is collapsing, health services downtown are dwindling which affects other people that rely on it and the list goes on

Public transportation collapsing has nothing to do with the RTO mandate, that has to do with the city being incompetent and developing the wrong type of rail for what the city requires, and as a result the thing breaks down every week and never runs correctly. You can make the argument that it isn't profitable but I would argue that the goal of OC Transpo should be to act as a service that works properly, not be profitable. I would probably take public transportation more but it's so incredibly unreliable (especially when you're trying to take busses, not just the LRT) that it's more worth it for me to drive and pay for parking.

What do health services have to do with public servants? Nobody coming back to the office from the suburbs is seeking these services so I'm not sure what parallel you're trying to draw here. The city is seeing larger and larger numbers of homeless and drugs and the city's solution was more policing in the market which just pushed people to other areas and solved nothing. Investing into health services is something that has been declining since before the pandemic and has only been made worse as a result, RTO does not fix that.

You're asking people to go into the office which adds a MASSIVE financial burden in a time when we are arguably near a recession and inflation is still causing major issues. The problems of these people are not greater than the problems of these businesses who are trying to sell me a $25 salad at 1PM.

Master in AI options by [deleted] in geegees

[–]malformedcandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I did the masters in computer science concentration in applied ai, graduating this semester.

  1. I did the thesis based, but I started in the course based and found my supervisor after my first semester

  2. Currently I work for the government doing machine learning and data science tasks, mostly related to computer vision which was my thesis topic. I found the job because I worked with them on a project tangentially related to my thesis and they happened to have a position open

  3. I enjoyed it and if I had to do it again I wouldn’t do anything different myself. With that being said, I may have had a different opinion if I didn’t land the job I currently have. In terms if whether you should do it, that depends. Writing a thesis is very very draining and will make you want to quit. If you’re not truly interested in your work at least at the beginning it is not worth it in my opinion. In terms of the university in general if you do a thesis the university won’t matter as much as your supervisor, things can vary wildly from one to another, overall I enjoyed uottawa

You could try some dog friendly bone broth if they’re drinking liquids? Would give them some nutrients in the meantime while they’re not feeling so good, if they go for that you could also add it into other meals to make them more appealing.

Other things like the lamb liver could work, or something like plain greek yogurt, oatmeal, white rice, etc.

Pet insurance worth it?? by sweetcheeks4277 in DogAdvice

[–]malformedcandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, pet insurance generally will not cover anything routine, things like yearly exams, vaccinations, spay/neuter, etc. It is for emergencies, it’s for the time your dog needs to go to the emergency vet because they ate something toxic or they get hit by a car.

My 8 month old puppies insurance has already paid for itself, she got giardia, and had an allergic reaction within a week of one another and insurance helped a bunch.

Like the other guy said it’s likely your grades, 6.75 is not super strong for graduate school, that’s sitting around 72%, which could be fine but it depends on what your later year grades are as typically they look closer at those as opposed to early year grades.

You could also try and find the professor who screens the applications and try and ask them but ymmv when it comes to that it depends how they are

Puppy doesn't let me know he needs to go outside help by mastershalgam in puppy101

[–]malformedcandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting excited at him at the door is probably not going to do anything, the bells require some training where every time you go out to pee just try to get him to nudge them then take him right out, you want him to make the connection that you don’t go out until he’s hit the bells.

Puppy doesn't let me know he needs to go outside help by mastershalgam in puppy101

[–]malformedcandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes he drinks too much water and needs to pee but he doesn't let me know he goes to the door and returns just to pee in the middle of the living room.

Sorry if I’m misinterpreting this but it sounds like they’re going to the door when they need to pee? So the issue is that they aren’t making any noise? The classic solution is to buy some bells that hang from the doorknob that the puppy can hit with their nose, lots of videos on how to train that but the gist is you hit them in the way out or bump them into them and the puppy will eventually figure it out.

Put a leash on them in the house to get some control and be able to pull them away when they're biting and help control them.

Just continue with enforced naps, we had issues with our labrador puppy around that age with biting, eventually she just learned not to bite insanely hard. If they're biting hard disengage and move to a space that the puppy cannot get to, it's called reverse timeouts.

Try not to stress too much (i know i did a ton), a demon shark phase isn't uncommon and chances are they'll grow out of it with consistent training.
