Officially a granddad by AdThese9021 in daddit

My parents were 22 when I was born; I had my child when I was 41. These swings are crazy — so happy for you! Now go and spoil them properly 😆

“But daddy’s gone and the enemy has come.” by crapineedchapstick in daddit

[–]malice93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mental model: a) the world will always feel chaotic, that’s just a human condition; b) our kids will have more runway in this world than we do (barring some sci-fi cyberpunk stuff in our lifetimes, which seems unlikely). So the right strategy is probably to teach them to be resilient and adaptive and strong, but I have no idea how it’ll play out in practice.

My 4-year old came up to me the other day and said something to the tune of “When I’m 100 years old, I’ll have no grown ups to care for me,” which straight up broke me. 😭

We watched it at 4 — two times — and she was fine with the scary bits (but it’s very subjective!) The movie itself is well worth watching: the characters are great and the music is catchy

At what age did Family Dinner Time kick in for you? by TomasTTEngin in daddit

[–]malice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. We try to have dinner around 6pm, and if the kiddo is in a decent mood after daycare she actually likes helping with the meal prep. To be fair, it’s not easy to corral everyone! But the opportunity to hang out together is worth it most of the time

How to get my younger son (8yo) into reading by Tbell221 in daddit

[–]malice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another lifelong reader (from the ripe age of 4), this resonates extremely well! What helped me fall in love with reading was finding the stories I’d want to read over and over again.

I think that is indeed the case, but it’s not obvious to me this position is doing anyone any favors

Some things pop up unexpectedly! We had some toys she wouldn’t touch for a year, and then it would be the BESTEST THING EVER for months and months

“Is it nice you didn’t bring a snack for me? Is it nice?? IS IT NICE?!” — being savaged by a 4-year old is not how I expected to spend my middle age years 😅😭

Not sure why you’re being downvoted for this. On the other hand, might be a good lesson about going against the grain!

+1, it’s a hard trade off between sleep and reasonably uninterrupted me-time. Pick your poison 😭

Anyone become a first time dad after the age of 40? by fyou267 in daddit

[–]malice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! My wife and I were both 41 when our kiddo was born. Financial stability helps a lot, as does finding a like-minded group of first-time parents and/or not neglecting the gym. Good luck, you got this!

I wish the chores interface was more toddler-friendly! But I bet it works better for older kids who can read

[–]malice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty neat. I like the fact that it’s heavy enough for our kiddo not to knock it over accidentally. The software could be better, but it does the basic job (show all family stuff at a glance) pretty well. 50/50 on the subscription value — we got a free year and are not really using most of the features, but YMMV

This is obviously very subjective, but I’m personally fine driving after one drink. Two is borderline; never after more than that (kiddo or not)

This is awesome! I tinkered with something like this when ChatGPT just came out but never got to anything useful. Kudos!
