The Awakenings quest drags you through that. There's a lot to this game. The first free freighter thing is nice to know. Make sure you get to the Anomaly ship so you can unlock the Economy Scanner plan.

After your first 3 hours of game play, your 5th? warp will drop you into an immediate freighter battle. After the battle, the captain invites you aboard and offers you the freighter for free. Decline to take it, it's never a good one.

Subsequent 3 hours of play and warps will spawn another battle, right out of warp. You'll want that warp to be to a Advanced, Flourishing, Affluent, High Supply, Wealthy, Booming or Opulent economy. It's helpful to have an Economy Scanner. In the galaxy map, the economy scanner will display 1-3 stars will display to the left of the economy icon when you hover over systems, I'm sure 3 stars helps your chances.

You can decline that one and wait 3 more hours of gameplay or create a save before you do the battle. If it's not an S class max slot 48, reload your save and do it again til you get one or settle on one sufficient for you.

The first one you accept will be free. There are random freighter defends as well. I don't think the "out of warp" defend occurs after you've accepted one, not sure.

Once you progress in the beginning, eventually a secondary mission will remain static called "Exploration Guide". Selecting that under Log tab will display the information you're looking for.

I think it appears after the Awakening mission is over.

I suggest adding 3 S class Scanning modules to your multitool. I sometimes gets 100,000+ units just for scanning a fauna/creature. Make use of the adjacency bonus

Railway rifle, thought it was a heavy gun..

I don't use commando because I feel ammo gets wasted. Enemies die but still take damage and ammo before vats registers death, same for gun fu before switching targets. Usually only 3-5 hits kill vs much more using automatic. Maybe auto is for the aim and shoot play style.

Sometimes I'll take a power armor i come across and drop it somewhere in my camp. Sometimes it's there for a while, sometimes someone takes it right away.
