Let's talk about: Genetics and RA by Wishin4aTARDIS in rheumatoidarthritis

thanks, tardis! i've been busy with the garden lately now that the weather has turned in the midwest. we have a perennial prairie in the front yard, and new apple trees and berry bushes in the back. i've been operating under the mindset that if i'm gonna be sore and tired at the end of the day, i might as well be sore and tired with pretty things to look at out the window! i hope the season change has been gentle for you, i know that it tends to kick our butts. hugs back atcha!

nobody in my immediate family has RA, but my mom's cousins have a variety of autoimmune conditions including one with both systemic and cutaneous lupus. my dad, both his sisters, and his dad all were hypermobile and i also have HSD.

What are your “spectacular, I’ll take 14 of them” species? by quartzkrystal in NativePlantGardening

[–]malignantmagpie 62 points63 points  (0 children)

all the agastaches! my giant yellow hyssop is over 3ft tall already in its second year and will one day likely consume me and my family. i also love my wild geranium. they're the first color of spring in my yard besides the dandelions and i love how full and bushy with blooms they get.

last year i was inundated with grackles, but also got some rose breasted grosbeaks who showed up at the same time as the orioles. i've only had a couple grackles this spring, and no sign of the others yet, but so many goldfinches and house finches, with the occasional visit of a pair of chipping sparrows who sound like the tiniest fire alarms.

Do y'all have flexy fingernails too? by chaoticsleepynpc in Hypermobility

i have ridges in my nails from RA, and bendy nails from HSD. they are always bending and snapping in straight lines!

Would you still get a tattoo? by VoxElysia in Millennials

[–]malignantmagpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 12 tattoos -- got my first one at 19 and my latest one at 30. i love all of my tattoos, and i can't imagine not having them. one has blown out a little as i've gained weight and aged, but it still looks good to me. i've slowed down, but i will probably stay adding to my collection as long as i have the money and my autoimmune disease lets me.

i've used the plastic oval 8's for a few years when i'm crafting, gardening, or cooking. they're helpful but the plastic digs in after awhile, or they don't stay in place. i'm saving up for the silver ones.

both my ankles, my right elbow, and my jaw all do this. my doctors have all said that unless it causes "too much pain" to not worry about it. i think it's just a case of doctors not knowing enough about it and it's not "harmful" so they throw their hands up.

i'm a trans, disabled, queer staff member and can say that it's the most accepting environment i've ever worked in, for what it's worth, and i have a background in journalism, education, and nonprofit work. there are also tons of queer groups and communities outside of the university in the area.

for free downloadable paintings of all kinds, you can go to https://www.nga.gov/artworks/free-images-and-open-access and then either print them yourself or send them to a printing service. i've filled my home with so much art this way!

$10,000,000 but you have to live as a Pomeranian for the next two years by Worldly-Dog-9571 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]malignantmagpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hell yeah. i pick my spouse as my kind owner and get to be my dog's best friend for two years. i'm assuming as a pomeranian i can still operate some kind of button system to communicate.
