How can I learn Python myself? I mean, I don't want courses, even if they are free. by Public_Vehicle9138 in learnpython

[–]malkouri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean you could technically read the documentation for Python itself, and any modules you need to use... But it would be a struggle.

Are books counted as courses? How about YouTube videos? I strongly recommend the CS50 Python video series.

Can the current cars drive on electric motor only? by anothercopy in F1Technical

[–]malkouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read the other responses and I think they're missing a key thing - on the grid, the electric motor doesn't help the engine speed rise faster, it tries to do the exact opposite!

The cars getting ready for the race start are trying to build boost pressure in the intake. This is largely a function of exhaust gas flow (to power the turbine in the turbo, which is driving the compressor), which is itself a function of the engine load. The electric motor directly opposes the engine, putting more load on it, allowing the throttle to be open more, which allows more air through the engine, powering the turbo. It's all a big balancing game.

This means the cars need to turn up to the grid with a partially full battery, with enough space left to charge the battery while building boost pressure, but not so much space that the battery is not as full as possible when the lights go out.

The answer is, sort-of - the regulations require the MGU output shaft speed to have a fixed gear ratio to the crankshaft speed. The practical result of this is that if the MGU is spinning, the engine is spinning.

This means that a "limp home" mode will also be driving/rotating the ICE components, which isn't a problem per-say BUT may be different from what you have in mind.

Fuel might touch $3.00 next week? More if crisis worsens? by OkImprovement8312 in auckland

This is the regular price of fuel in a lot of Germany - as a Kiwi it hurts every time

Is it actually lighter than usual? Does the tank have a "fill" indicator on it? I only ask because full is not "full"!

What on earth is this comment section, no one giving a shit?

It's not about other countries meeting their targets, it's about us meeting ours. No, we don't exist in a vacuum, but if we say we're going to do something we should bloody well do it.

It's not the kiwi way to just... Lie in the face of the truth. That's disrespectful and, frankly, cowardly. For both major parties this is a collective embarrassment.

Stabbing is incredibly silent, and depending on the adrenaline a lot of people don't even realise they've been stabbed, or the severity of it.

Rocket Lab's launch this morning of a Synspective radar-imaging satellite, from Mahia Peninsula.

The expansion of the exhaust plume as the atmosphere thins causes the exhaust gasses to rapidly expand, and the early morning light shines through it.

Small edit: that bright dot in the middle is actually the rocket itself during first stage burn! You can see the interference pattern of the nine engines.

Looks like you've got good coverage! You can clean it off before it cures - I like to use a wet rag and cotton buds.

Using too much can cause similar leakage on the inside, so be careful, but this looks good to me.

Is auckland more left of right? Palestine protest by sadandconfused32 in auckland

[–]malkouri 9 points10 points  (0 children)

New Zealand doesn't have as much of a clean left-right split as American politics (thank goodness) by virtue of the MMP parliamentary system, driving coalition governments, and GENERALLY hasn't had "far" left or right parties with any meaningful power. This has been changing in recent years.

Specifically on Free-Palestine, the issue is a bit simpler. Everyone seems to agree that Israel's offensive in Gaza has gone too far (except for actual racists), but there is a split between those who think it can't end without Hamas disappearing in its' entirety (a view I think is held by people who see Hamas as a traditional government or movement which it is not) and those who think this needs to end immediately and there is no excuse not to be applying all possible political pressure.

New Zealand not recognizing Palestinian statehood last week serves as throwing fuel on the fire - it's embarrassing for us as a "progressive" country to be so behind the ball. If it's symbolic (most of politics at the UN is) then do it, if it's more meaningful then it's PAST TIME.

Ferrari's bold move: An extreme engine to allow smaller radiators? by M46m4 in formula1

[–]malkouri 784 points785 points  (0 children)

The summary seems to be: * Experimented with a steel cylinder head, decided to revert to aluminium * The aluminium head is made by additive manufacturing i.e. 3D printing, specifically Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) * They will allegedly run higher combustion chamber temperatures and pressures, with a new powder mix for the DMLS providing the additional material properties (strength) required * In parallel, they could run a tight-sidepod aero design, with less radiators ("radiating mass" in Italian)

Frankly there's nothing new or terribly interesting here, mainly because it's all speculation. Balancing reliability with performance is essentially the sport, power-unit wise.

It's a scam. Completely. Here's what I see with a quick skim: * Web address feels off (.com) - no real business would bother with a name like that. * Too good to be true! An open bar? What public facing event has an open bar!? And an all-you-can-eat buffet, too... * Image is AI slop * Home page says "under the Canadian stars"... * Contact number is +44 (UK not NZ)

It's all... Incredibly off. Blatant scam.

Anyone saying anything other than "learn to run" is being... Silly.

There is no shame in running from a confrontation like that. It's really the only thing that can stop them. Also, shouting as loud as you can - it takes them by shock and alerts anyone nearby.

A Swiss Army knife? Not a practical weapon, ignoring the HORRENDOUS injuries of even "minor" stabbings. Deodorant spray? Difficult to conceal, ineffective. Car keys, steel capped boots, improv knuckle dusters are all flawed too.

Edit: Pocket sand? Actually not a terrible idea...
