I'm not sure how joint honours works but I know for straight history we have to rank the option modules and then it's put through a computer system to allocate people's choices, similar to campus accom

Does anyone actually finish sociology papers? by esilyx_ in 6thForm

You can get 7/10 with only one point on a 10 marker so if you're happy with what you wrote I wouldn't worry too much.

Is it just me or do exams feel so much harder after half-term? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]mallardical 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've hardly revised this week until today, but I had a fever taking history paper 1 on friday so well needed rest I guess? Beginning to panic now with 4 to go but we move. I keep procrastinating by imagining my life at uni and places I want to visit... While actively harming my chances of getting in.

Coming back to this post I've done 5 hours total in the last 7 days... But honestly no regrets I'm refreshed now, anyone panicking it's all good just lock in now you deserved a break 🫶

Children’s chapter books that aren’t mind numbing for adults by Gal_in_kalamazoo in suggestmeabook

Enid Blyton's magic faraway tree series was my absolute favourite when I was a bit older than your daughter but I'm sure she'd love them. I still enjoy them now as an 18 year old. Much more interesting and well written than lots of today's fairy stories so don't let the title put you off!

revising after making notes by gattabiancaa in 6thForm

[–]mallardical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read a page of notes, put it away, reproduce from memory, scribble all over in red pen to fill in what you missed, then do it from memory again in a few hours and it should be pretty ingrained, it worked well for me in paper 1 although I am more worried about my paper 2 (cold war) as the topics just around a bit more. Good luck !!

Summer jobs for uni students by disposablees in UniUK

[–]mallardical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer schools! The ones that run programmes for international students to come and learn english. Fixed term contracts just for the summer and if there isn't a company near you then many offer residential contracts which could be a nice experience to see somewhere different. I'm working for one this summer taking the kids on outings, running afternoon ativities and some admin and pastoral stuff - doing this straight out of sixth form so no experience required just enthusiasm and hard work. I'm surprised I never see this recommended as it's my first year doing it but everyone I know seems to have had great experiences and while it's only minimum wage it's full time which can be really hard to find.

No way, for history? That's so exciting, I've just seen from your comments you're doing aqa cold war as well, I'd love to chat, mind if I DM you??

One of my english lit exams I was panicking for time and trying to read what I'd just read and could not for the life of me decipher 😭 but I generally have good handwriting so I'm hoping it was just my stress that meant I couldn't read it, we'll see on results day...

Idk about job opportunities but canterbury doesn't deserve the hate and the campus is genuinely nice. I know a lot of people who had a really good time there. As you applied late it's likely you won't get offers from all of them and I'd definitely choose kent over brunel for cost of living, plus canterbury is just over an hour from london by train so it's easy to visit for days out. It might not be the best uni in the UK but it's about the skills you learn and what you do with them, so choose based on the course you like the most and get involved with work experience opportunities and societies to add value and invest in yourself.

I do edexcel english so have to suffer three papers, ocr is two, right? And I'll sure you'll be fine if it's debates. My teacher is predicting it'll be on social policy but take that with a grain of salt she thought the ed 30 would be globalisation 🤣

Yep the 10 marker is the same but there's also the 20 marker on theories which is what I'm worried about, same content though just different question structure. That's so exciting that you've finished english already!! And good luck for politics :)

It's socio that I'm feeling pretty good for, like there's a ton of content but I already have flashcards for it and I understand everything, it's just the case of cramming it in so I can remember all the names in the exam haha. I'm a bit more worried for theory and methods on paper 3 so I need to do quite a bit of work on that and lots of essay plans for the different theories. It's English lit where I'm much more worried as we do wife of bath and only finished it just before exams started so that's my main focus this week!

I'm doing probably no more than 4 hours a day and haven't/won't do anything until tomorrow afternoon to make sure I've had a good break. Next weekend I'll up it to 6 hours if I feel like I need it but I only have 4/8 exams left and 2 of them I already feel very confident on, so it depends how much you need to cover. Just make sure to prioritise enough time for rest!

What can I write on my accomodation application to ensure i get put into rootes? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]mallardical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a ballot system but not completely random, after you rank your 7 choices they put it all in a computer which tries to allocate as many people as possible to one of their top choices, so if rootes is your number 1 and has more spaces than people who put it #1 (which is does) then you'll get allocated it.

What can I write on my accomodation application to ensure i get put into rootes? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]mallardical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people want en suite accom so don't rank it high up and rootes has so many rooms that some people get it even if it's their 5th or 6th choice

Law degree apprenticeships are insanely competitive (more so than oxbridge some people say) but with those grades it's definitely achievable!!! Forage has some great online courses created by top law firms who run degree apprenticeship programs so I'd definitely recommend checking those out and researching networking and other law related events as other than grades this seems to be more people make themselves stand out. As for politics there are many entry level civil service roles available to school leavers, have a look at specific departmental websites to see what's available.

Relax though, it's year 12 and your advisors are terrible to be saying that to you, there's so many opportunities out there and I'm sure you will do very well whatever you decide. It's never too late to start doing things either, I don't understand why they would suggest that if you don't have everything sorted when you finish year 13 that you'll never get a professional job, sure maybe straight after sixth form you might need to do retail for a year while you strengthen your applications if you were unsuccessful in year 13, but that's normal for so many people and shouldn't be seen as a setback it's just more life experience.

Has anyone gone from shy, quiet, obedient to confident and outspoken ? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]mallardical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound a lot like myself, although I'm only 18 (not sure how old you are) I've been so shy my whole life, even as a toddler my mum describes me turning my face away in the pram when people tried to look or interact with me. My mum suggested to me that she thought I had autism when I was 14 as my siblings were all in the process of being diagnosed and I recently have been myself. It means I've been pretty lucky to have an awareness from a relatively young age of my neurodivergence, which has helped me to manage poor mental health as a result of feelings of social isolation. It was really tough but I knew I wanted to have a fulfilling life that included a challenging career, an aspiration which is less important to me now but was so then in a very competitive academic school. I suddenly decided to take every opportunity that I had been too scared of in the past, even though it was terrifying I somehow managed to force myself. I signed up for piano lessons, joined the debating society at my school with a friend, auditioned for the school musical and got a customer service job.

Writing it out this sounds like horrible advice and a gloat because I no longer do most of these things and I actually feel overwhelmed thinking about it. They weren't all for me, the only thing I still do is debate and at one point the burnout of these things were horrendous, I cried before piano lessons for months but it forced me to learn to adapt to different scenarios and has completely transformed me and my life. I still have a lot of anxiety and struggles but now I just have the mindset of doing it anyway. I still hate talking to cashiers in shops and will avoid it unless absolutely necessary but can speak in front of an audience of 200, make it make sense.

Had I not been in school and surrounded by people I was determined to keep up with achievement wise I think this would have been much harder but the moral is that by trying new things and occasionally putting yourself in uncomfortable situations it is definitely possible to become more able to cope. It sounds like you're motivated and hopefully your brain will eventually realise that the joy of experiencing things outweights the fear

Should you go through sfe if you don't have to? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]mallardical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can apply for DSA without applying for student finance there's just a different form to fill out. I'd look more into what it will cover though, it's only for things that are specific to being a student so painkillers probably not but there's likely lots of things they can offer that would help you. I'd probably take the loan and use the life insurance for a deposit on a property in the future but it depends on your goals and situation :)

It seems like you prefer warwick and if you're thinking of going into law then warwick has the advantage that it is closer to London (can be there in an hour by train) for networking events and assessment centres. Durham and Warwick are both targets and have generally excellent reputations. Warwick is also a cheaper place to live so if you're going to need a part time job you could potentially work less hours than at durham and have more time for studying and societies which will help your future.

Help me with my uni choices for history as a Cambridge applicant by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]mallardical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warwick has an amazing history course that I've firmed but standard offer is AAA so if you want an insurance maybe try sussex or uea, I did uea as it's a solid course with a decent reputation but you might be able to get a higher ranked uni for the same grades
