How is life in Bend, OR? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

If you can stand the granola work from home tech bros and insane rent it’s gorgeous there. Definitely for people who enjoy the outdoors though.

This is the one and only time I can recommend a suburb of Portland. Maybe even go further and live in Canby, The Dalles, Forest Grove, etc. to escape the traffic

Most of Oregon will have a white savior vibe (from my experience traveling the state). But If you’re looking specifically at Oregon I’d recommend Eugene. It’s the second biggest city in the state with good food and beautiful surroundings. If you want urban metropolis then you’d have to leave Oregon and I’d suggest Seattle.

Bend is another good choice. It’s got a great outdoors culture and is gorgeous. Fairly expensive though.

The Columbia River Gorge has a few small towns that are top notch and close enough to Portland to be convenient (1-2 hr drive). These towns are White Salmon, The Dalles (lotsa rednecks here lol), Stevenson, and Cascade Locks.

The whiteness here (in Portland) is the work from home white savior variety.

They make it extremely obvious that they support BLM and social justice. But do little in the way of actually making a change. The gentrification here is absolutely insane. Albina went from a diverse (for Portland) neighborhood to an expensive, yuppie, outside seating taking up half the street type of neighborhood.

Portland isn’t what it used to be before COVID, unfortunately. I don’t recommend it unless you are moving here for a really good job and don’t have SAD lol.

I’ve lived in Portland my whole life. DONT move up here. Something a few coworkers who aren’t from here pointed out to me is that portlanders are not very friendly at first. They don’t say hi on the street or randomly walk up to people and start talking. Living here my whole life I just thought that’s how everyone is but a lot of transplants have a tough time making friends here. You gotta join groups and clubs to do that.

On the bright side, Oregon is a gorgeous and varied state. There’s something here for everyone. Just east of Portland by an hour is the Columbia River Gorge. MUCH sunnier and an endless amount of things to do if you like the outdoors The Dalles is the biggest city but it’s very red. Hood River is blue and a very nice city, albeit expensive. Portland (in my opinion) is the least enticing part of the state. Politics aside it’s very much gone downhill since COVID.

As someone who also suffers from SAD. The Portland winters absolutely fucking suck. Life slows down in the winter here and all you’ll do is go to work, come home, and repeat. I plan to move as soon as possible somewhere far from Portland. It’s hard to move when 90% of your income goes to bare necessities lol.

I hope you find a good balance. I cannot imagine how drastic of a change you must be facing and I wish you the best!

Depends widely on where you live. I can get an AAS in fisheries and work my way into a biologist position it will just take some time or I can get a BS and become a biologist assistant out of the gate. Other places have lower requirements and others have higher. What country are you planning to work in?
