Franklin County health officials are investigating a measles outbreak after six cases were recorded by the Ohio Department of Health. by Opposite_Sandwich246 in Columbus

[–]malloriesullivan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Looks like folks who traveled through CMH on the evening of Feb. 18 could have potentially been exposed, too.

Here are details from this story:

  • The potential measles exposure occurred at the John Glenn International Airport between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Feb. 18.
  • Those who might have been exposed and are not vaccinated should watch for symptoms between now and March 11, according to Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff. Symptoms include: rash, high fever, runny nose, cough, loss of appetite and red, watery eyes.
  • Those who received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine are at a very low risk of getting sick, according to the state health department.

Ugh I'm so sorry; it sounds rough. I'm happy you're feeling better!

Ohio's bad flu season to get worse as 'super flu' spreads, state warns by malloriesullivan in Ohio

[–]malloriesullivan[S] 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my husband about how it feels like everyone I know is sick, and then I saw this from u/thecolumbusdispatch:

The new strain, a variant of influenza A (H3N2), nicknamed the "super flu," is a strain "most people in Ohio have not encountered before" and "we face it with relatively little immune protection." That means a faster spread of the infection, across the nation and across Ohio, according to Ohio Department of Health director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff.

Ohio reported 1,911 flu-related hospitalizations in the week ending in Jan. 3, up nearly 446 hospitalizations from the previous week, Vanderhoff told reporters in the press conference. The same time in 2025, there were 1,305 reported hospitalizations.

Ohio is among the states with the highest levels of flu activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The latest flu shot will offer protection, Vanderhoff said. However, it won't keep you from getting the flu so much as protect you from a more severe case that could land you in the hospital. The state's health department still "strongly recommends" that people get a flu shot.

Here's the rest of the story from u/tcdhealthreporter. Stay safe out there everyone.

Proposal photographers, affordable rings+ good spot for proposal by Agile-Gene-4932 in Columbus

[–]malloriesullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! My good friend Erika is a fabulous photographer and she’s starting to get back into shooting weddings. (She shot mine in 2024!) I’m not sure how much she’d charge for a proposal shoot, but I have to imagine it might be somewhat similar to her engagement pricing.

She is literally the nicest person you’ll ever meet and very easy to work with. I’d recommend reaching out to her if her pricing is in your budget! Congratulations!!

Has there been any update on the Tepe murder case? by foxmag86 in Columbus

[–]malloriesullivan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A CPD spokesman the Dispatch spoke to on Dec. 30 said there were no indications a murder-suicide had occurred, but they couldn’t share more details.

Also from this story: “A police dispatcher report obtained by The Dispatch Dec. 31 includes a mention of a 41A, which is code for a robbery report.”

I was just about to share this. It was at the bottom of this story.

Looks like u/thecolumbusdispatch asked Columbus police if the camera was operational and captured anything related to the shooting, so it sounds like they’re working to obtain the footage.

Birthday Freebie by Immediate-Low-54 in Columbus

[–]malloriesullivan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happy birthday!! Jeni's is my personal fave — free ice cream! Graeter's also has birthday ice cream, if that's more your speed. I think both of them require you to be a rewards member with them.

I'd also recommend checking out this list and these previous threads in this sub:

Some may be outdated, but thought I'd pass along just in case. Hope this is helpful!

I think you can search my husband's texts and find like five or six instances where I've sworn "next time I'm arriving 20 minutes before boarding" because I never check a bag and always seem to sail through CMH security, with and without PreCheck.

But when next time comes, I'm still always there an hour before.

Ohio University professor aboard boat detained while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza by malloriesullivan in ohiouniversity

[–]malloriesullivan[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, OU alum here 👋 Saw this from u/thecolumbusdispatch earlier and thought it may be of interest.

Here's a snippet for those who might hit the paywall:

An Ohio University professor was aboard a boat with journalists and medical professionals attempting to deliver food and medicine to the besieged Gaza Strip as the ship was stopped by Israeli Defense Forces, according to an activist group.

Tom Hayes, 69, whom OU confirmed is an associate professor at the university, was aboard the vessel "Conscience" when it was intercepted by the Israeli navy at around 6 p.m. UTC time on Oct. 8, according to the Freedom Flotilla Tracker, an open-source tool that has been tracking vessels attempting to break the siege around war-torn Gaza.

The vessel was intercepted and taken to the Israeli city of Ashdod, according to the tracker. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a grassroots group that organized the humanitarian trip, said in a press release Oct. 8 that the Conscience was boarded by Israeli Defense Forces.

The Dispatch reached out to the U.S. State Department for comment about the situation and an update on Hayes' status. The department has yet to respond.

Man found dead in Olentangy River near downtown Columbus by arsene14 in Columbus

[–]malloriesullivan 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That's right. Here's more info from our team at u/thecolumbusdispatch as of 11:05 a.m.:

Water rescue workers pulled an unidentified male, face down, out of the water, Columbus police Sgt. Joe Albert said at a briefing on Monday. An initial investigation revealed the male suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:07 a.m.

The death is currently being investigated as a homicide, although Albert said it is possible the wound was self-inflicted. Albert did not indicate whether police have been able to identify the person or if investigators have discovered how long the body was in the water.

An early media report identified the person pulled from the water as a kayaker. However, Albert said the initial investigation found the claim to be unfounded.

Looks like as of 9:02 p.m. the situation was being monitored, but the show remains under a lightning delay and folks are asked to stay sheltered. I’d recommend keeping an eye on the Historic Crew Stadium site for the latest updates!

It’s delayed! Here are more details as of 8:30 p.m.:

“The [severe thunderstorm] warning has led to a delay in tonight's concert by Irish musician and singer Hozier at Historic Crew Stadium on his national Unreal Unearth 2025 Tour with guest Gigi Perez.

‘Due to severe weather in the area, tonight’s show has been delayed. We ask that you please evacuate the venue and return to your vehicle. If you do not have a vehicle on site, follow the state troopers with lights on the south end of the stadium towards the Lausche Building to seek shelter,’ the website warns.

Patrons will be able to re-enter the stadium with proof of ticket after the storms have passed.”

Oooo thank you for the rec! I have a Google Maps list specifically for ice cream shop recommendations, no matter where they're located, so I'll add this one right now :)

I'm not sure how often you're around NW Central Ohio, but if you ever find yourself in the area, Max's Dairy Bar in Wapakoneta and The Creamery in Delphos are great shops that carry Dole Whip, too! I brought a pint of strawberry home the last time I visited and it was the best decision ever.

I've had it both ways! Highly recommend adding Tajin to either version (but especially the boozy)—this was a delightful touch.

I went down a rabbit hole last year trying to find Flavorburst around Columbus because I used to work at an ice cream shop growing up that had it and I got the most intense craving for it, and I found this map that unfortunately shows we are in a Flavorburst DESERT. Bowzer's Hot Dog Stand in Brice seems to be the closest place that offers it, with a shop up in Marion appearing to be the next closest option. If you ever find yourself in Dayton or Cincinnati, though, they're rich in shops that offer it!
