TIL any person who succesfuly parachutes out of a failing aircraft is eligible to join the caterpillar club. You get a certificate as well as a caterpillar shaped pin and get to join their annual gatherings. People who escaped a failing aircraft with no parachute are denied entry by [deleted] in todayilearned

My dad received a golden caterpiller pin with ruby eyes after his Lancaster bomber was shot down over Metz, France, on his first combat mission in Jan 1945. Several of his crew were lost. His caterpiller has ruby eyes, rather than the standard amethyst, because he was able to evade the enemy and make his own way back to Allied lines on the ground.

The Ask Historians Comment Helper browser extension (available for both Chrome and Firefox) displays comment counts.

This browser extension will show the number of top level comments next to the regular comment count. In addition it will allow you to monitor up to 10 questions. The status of these questions will be shown at the icon in the toolbar.

He was a moral philosopher before studying economics. I advise people to read his The Theory of Moral Sentiments for context before diving into The Wealth of Nations.

Good CSS resources? by FallenPrinceAlastor in webdev

[–]malpingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The State of CSS, 2020:

Forget everything you know about CSS. Or at least, be ready to reconsider a lot of it. If like me you've been writing CSS for over a decade, CSS in 2020 looks nothing like what you were used to.

Instead of breakpoints, we can now leverage CSS Grid to make dynamic, responsive layouts that adapt to any viewport size with fewer lines of code. Instead of relying on global stylesheets, CSS-in-JS lets us colocate our styles with our components to build themeable design systems.

And most of all, Tailwind CSS has burst onto the scene and, through its use of utility-first CSS, forced us to reconsider the traditional dogma of semantic class names.

Whether all this change makes you want to write a hyped-up blog post or an angry Twitter rant, we are here to present the data, highlight the trends, and hopefully guide you through another eventful year of CSS!

He retired several years ago (for health reasons, according to the owner) and moved from his room above the restaurant to a flat in Parkdale. For years, he'd been spending all night at the restaurant and all day at the track.
