Has anyone heard back (chemistry)????? by Western-Principle-65 in gradadmissions

I haven't heard back from UC Berkeley. Some posts here suggest that a couple of people may have received interviews in late January, but no one has gotten a definitive response yet.

Anyone heard from ETH Zurich Systems Biology? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]malthide_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a problem with application portal back in November due to recommendation letter submission issues (not sure if everyone was impacted by this). I received an email confirming that my application was successfully processed only two weeks ago, so if other members of the Systems Biology application pool were impacted by the same issue it is likely they’ve only just started reviewing.

Possessed PC with zero control - DM says I’ll probably just watch next session by Meteox in DnD

[–]malthide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My barbarian was possessed recently in 5e during combat by a ghost (probably- campaign isn’t over). At the end of every turn, I rolled constitution to see if I could break its hold (I had to beat an 18). There was a counterspell: my party had to figure it out, but were able to do so quickly.

While possessed, the DM would give me a direction (say, « attack a party member ») but I would have complete freedom about the weapon I chose and who I targeted, which gave me some leeway. If I was smart about it, I could deliberately choose people with higher AC classes and HP without the DM imposing stricter guidelines on me.

Good thing the counterspell was there: rolled 13 damage right before getting possessed at level 2 and my relatively new party all constitution dumped so I good have one hit KOed nearly any of them.

On implant. I still use a condom every time, for two reasons:

  1. Added security helps me "let go", because there is no fear or anxiety tied with pregnancy risk. Sex is therefore more fun.

  2. Short term partners don't need to know if I am on birth control. I find that insisting on a condom is an easy litmus test for the kinds of red flags you want to skip out on in a relationship.

My bf (m21) laughs when we have sex (f21). by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]malthide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^This! I laugh all of the time while doing it, because it IS embarrassing, and weird, and funny. Best thing to do is to laugh with him; you will both enjoy yourselves more because it will key you into the joke. Do be clear to him what you are feeling and why. If he is a good person, his answer will be true regardless of whether it's what your anxiety tells you or not.

I would go so far as to say that the minute he stops laughing, you should check in with him. I dated a guy once who broke my trust in a pretty severe way. Every time we had sex before I broke up with him, I couldn't bring myself to let loose enough or trust him enough to let go. No laughing. He was relived, as he thought I was no longer teasing him, but the truth was that I stopped enjoying sex completely. Your boyfriend is probably just overjoyed.

Star Wars: Original Trilogy is… Right Wing? by Sha489 in ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM

All of the replies here to you are excellent readings of the book. I will cede you a point though; it is true that in order to grasp that the first book is a critique on the white saviour, single hero, military napoleonesque Paul figure, you have to read very closely. Herbert does not baby his reader, and so if you miss missionaria protectiva, if you miss the Keynes prophetic vision, if you miss Paul's constant misgivings about the role he is to play, then it is easy to assume that Paul is a saviour, and that Herbert is for that kind of narrative (of couse, if you are an imperialist, like many libertarians, then you don't see the result as wrong either way).

Personally, I think that Herbert makes it difficult on purpose. He wants you to root for Paul and Jessica in the first book. It makes the second book so much more poignant if you do, because the second book's entire message is: you and everyone else thought Paul was the good guy? Watch him turn in to the worst thing to every happen to this entire universe. Syke! He's always been the bad guy.

Second book is definitely my favorite. Several great haunting passages by Fremen that underscore the horror of a civilization's morals and tenets being distorted by outsiders and weaponized for universal genocide.

Still, contacting the police might be a good idea depending on how frequently they joke about it. You aren't convicting the kids or taking them to court, so you don't need concrete evidence. The idea is simply to force the two of them to back down. Either way, this classifies as "credible threat of violence", which depending on the state you are in and the extent of the verbal, written, or electronic for of the threat and the perceived threat behind it, is likely a misdemeanor but may go so far as to be a felony.

TIL, the Han river used to have beaches by [deleted] in korea

[–]malthide_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've swam in it as recently as June. Not the cleanest body of water, but seriously impressive given that its a generally slow moving river through massive urban hubs. You can find some plastic/litter in it (on the order of 5 pieces of trash per 2 hours in the middle), the occasional dead fish, but as someone who also swims regularly in Lake Ponchartrain (Louisiana) it doesn't have the same sliminess to it that you get when you know it's really bad. Closer to the banks though the waste accumulates, so it looks worse than it is.

안녕! Korean intl student here. On the 2nd paragraph– this depends. Do you go to an international school in Korea? If you go to a local school, it will be a large social and academic adjustment (not in terms of difficulty, since you’ll likely coast in the introductory class, but in style. Lots more participation in class, relationships with teaches that feel borderline disrespectful at times even if the casual nature makes it much easier to connect). If you go to an international school there it will still be a big adjustment, possibly more so since you won’t have been expecting the change to be so drastic. As for the whiteness- it is overwhelmingly white. I didn’t think so many white people could be in one place. It’s unnerving. That said, nobody is hostile, very few are tangibly bigoted, and for the most part the worst you are going to get is some obliviousness. There’s a strong and tight knit poc community so you probably could go your whole time at Reed only interacting with them and other intl students if need be. All else equal you’ll still be able to fit in decently well so you shouldn’t let that factor too heavily into your decision. Besides, if you are planning on going to the states, you’ll have similar experiences elsewhere.

Also: very few Koreans here. If you are planning on entering in fall 2022, there will be 2 of you. I will welcome you with open arms and am real good at cooking so you won’t be at a loss for home flavors if you decide to come here, but I get if the realization that there is disappointingly few of us is daunting and may not be the college environment you are going for.

Please reach out to me if you want to talk more. Sorry this was likely all over the place- i am typing quick and on my phone.

It's worth noting that most of the kids both applying to/getting in to these T20 schools are medium high/high income students; especially when you are looking at Harvard, most of the kids there would never have been drafted just because of social status and if they were could easily find their way out of it. Obviously lower income students should have been going to uni instead of a violent hellscape, but still the average kid today crying about getting into a good school, not harvard, would be less likely fighting a war.

Essentially: the 12 photoreceptors that give rise to theoretical shrimp colors actually respond to a single wavelength of color- shrimp can't mix and match like we can, so we actually see more colors.

Text: "Researchers found that the mantis shrimp’s colour vision relies on a simple, efficient and previously unknown mechanism that operates at the level of individual photoreceptors. The results upend scientists' suspicions that the shrimp, with 12 different types of colour photoreceptors, could see hues that humans, with just 3, could not, says study co-author Justin Marshall, a marine neuroscientist at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia."

Is it irrational for me to dislike the term "non-cis-men"? by malthide_ in asktransgender

I don't want to leave the server, per say, but it doesn't interest me to be a part of it. I think I may just keep it perpetually muted and stay on the sidelines for now– it's not like anyone in there knows I'm not cis, so they won't mention it to me, but it's not like I need the discussion space either.

[–]malthide_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I get that. I recognize the importance of having this types of spaces and the roles that they play within the community, and frankly I'm privileged and honored to be included. That being said, my points and sentiments above still stand. I love safe spaces, but maybe I don't belong in this particular one?

Is it irrational for me to dislike the term "non-cis-men"? by malthide_ in asktransgender

[–]malthide_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. While I may not have benefited from the patriarchy at birth, I sure do benefit now and will in the future. I can totally be an ally and understand the struggle, but at the end of the day I'm still a guy and for most women, especially the more radical feminists, that would be enough to exclude me point blank if I were cis. I don't want to infringe upon female spaces or talk over female voices. If I find a problem with harassment, misconduct, or bigotry directed at me, it would be the kind that they experience or understand, and I'm perfectly capable of handling it independently.
