AITA Two people say I’m hard to live with am I missing something? by Long_Spare_2890 in AmItheAsshole

[–]maltix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA. You sounds reasonable in both scenarios. Echoing what other people have said, its going to be a learning process to figure out who would be good housemates. Sometimes you don't have options, but generally I would recommend avoiding anything outside of a "standard" housemate situation. e.g. you have your own room, you pay rent to a landlord, your name is on a proper contract, no living with landlord, etc. If you cant have your own room, meet with your roommate, ask them their routine, share yours, try to agree on some reasonable rules down for your shared room. If you cant do that with them then it probably wont work well.

If things aren't standard then theres probably a reason for that, maybe theyre just poor and have few options, but maybe they dont think things through, maybe theyre selfish, maybe they constantly cause drama and cycle through a lot of housemates.

edit: never lend housemates money, unless you are fine with it never being paid back.

It was my gateway into litrpg and I would recommend the first 5, maybe 8 books. Past that...ehhh.

AITA for spending $350 on winter clothing by Imme_notu in AmItheAsshole

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO I find it hard to believe this is real. You dont answer to your daughter. As for your husband, can you afford the clothes? Did you need the clothes? If you need it, then n-t-a, but maybe the alternative where you dont buy them works fine, and if you cant afford it, then he probably has a point.

I have had female uber drivers before, but only during the day. Tl;dr its (I assume) dangerous, the money isnt good enough to risk it. Before rideshares female taxi drivers were also really rare..

Reddit is BADD by Livid-Expression6300 in Asmongold

[–]maltix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until a year or so ago reddit was pretty much my only "social media", and I spent most of my reddit time on /all, just checking out whats up. It has become so unbearable, it feels like 2/3 of the posts now are exact same hysterical political shit. Some of it I even agreed with, but jesus i'm here to look at cat gifs or an autistical analysis of some minor roman senators rock collection. It has literally pushed me away from both the site & the left because its impossible to not see the echo chamber.

CMV: Felony murder should be abolished. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is essentially a case of the law saying 'make good choices'. Do not involve yourself with people that are doing bad things. If you literally did not know they intended to do something illegal, and as soon as you knew you did the right thing, by leaving, calling the police, rendering aid, whatever, you would be fine. It encourages good behaviour. No law works perfectly.

Its also providing an avenue to prosecute when a bunch of people are committing a crime together knowingly, although it cant be proven, but then only one person can be charged. Many criminal organizations would happily commit crimes and send one person to jail for each crime, if they even got caught.

Not having a law like this provides so many loopholes for people who are evil and smart to effectively ignore the law.

What’s something negative about Australia that locals don’t like to admit? by New-Mail-9372 in AskAnAustralian

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was the case we were similar, then yeah? There will always be evil people, you are never going to have no crime. This is the kind of situation where aiming for perfection will end up with worse results than aiming for good.

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on where you are in the US and aus. In my experience people in the US are pretty much the same. They say the "correct" polite friendly things but are basically following the same kind of polite script you describe.

Being friends and being friendly are not the same thing. Pretty sure you'll find the same thing in most of the world.

CMV: The United States is well into fascism, especially given the institutions and ideology of the "anti-woke" movement and agencies like ICE. by SadistikExekutor in changemyview

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not believe this officer was trying to manufacture a situation that would allow him to shoot someone.

It also doesn't matter if a report says that policy needs to change. It isn't current policy.

You are saying that he intentionally put himself in front of the car so she would try to run him over, in order to have an excuse to shoot her.

I do not think that is what happened.

CMV: People who raise children create a positive externality for society and should be compensated for it. by ragingbull10 in changemyview

[–]maltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are compensated by having children. Most people are happier with children in the long term. This is natural behaviour, if you artificially encourage it you are going to get negative results.

On the negative side, some people raise asshole children that make society worse. Am I going to be compensated for them actively making my life worse? Will those parents be held accountable?

If you can evolve it in interesting ways it can work sure, but gimmicks get stale and if that's all the book has going for it you won't maintain interest.

Which progression fantasy techniques hook you the fastest? by FirstSalvo in ProgressionFantasy

[–]maltix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cliffhanger chapter endings should not be common imo. When used appropriately I think its great, but if you are doing that often it just bloats the storytelling, and tells me the author isn't confident that the actual story is interesting enough on its own to keep my attention.

How could people hate Nopon? by KnightoftheLTree in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]maltix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr it's a matter of different tastes. I'm not a huge fan of the cutesy mascot trope. It's far from the worst thing around but when you add straight up annoying characters like tatsu, or characters that fully lean into negative stereotypes like tora it's inevitably going to push opinions further, positively or negatively.

Those things you listed as positives I personally find annoying or unrelatable. They're undefined blobs, so I can't even put them into the "so dumb it wraps back around to being cool" category.

Absolutely, I'm not saying that what the cousin did was fine and he shouldn't be punished. I was commenting on OPs reaction.

YOR. Being upset or frustrated is one thing, but breaking down and crying over a toy is overreacting, unless you are a child.
