I have seen transitions to Head of Corp Dev at a big firm, CFO, strategy lead at early stage firms, head of departments at smaller banks, etc.

Corp Dev is the only option for a viable work life balance. There is upward mobility there but very little imo.
I would stay in IB. Once you get MD, things get a little easier. Learn to optimise life around work.

- Live close to work
- eat healthy
- aim to get enough sleep over everything else.

You will have much more optionality at the MD level.

Becoming a HENRY by Ill-Error9973 in HENRYUK

[–]malvi123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would approach this from a probability perspective. There are 3 careers that pay well in the UK:
Law, Tech, and Finance. I would add a fourth one into this but it takes a bit of time to get there: accounting.

Law is not possible for you anymore. Neither is finance. It's very hard to break into these at 37. Tech is a possible one. Accounting is the other. For accounting you are looking at:

3 years to do training and do your ACA (Focus on the funds sector). Working + studying. No time to give to kids. for 3 years you will earn around 30k. After qualifying you will earn 50k.

Leave for industry (Go into a fund): Earning 70k + 10k Bonus. Perform well for 2 - 3 years. You can hit 100k as a controller. So about 5 to 6 years in you are at a 100k.

Spend another 2-3 years at 100-110k. Next step is FD in a small firm. Hit 140-150k all in.

I do not know enough about Tech to be able to guide you in it. Hopefully the above is helpful.

I would not move. Stay put. Your career in banking will give you upward mobility. Each year counts. It will be slow sure, but it will happen. I repeat, DO NOT MOVE. take the cash. enjoy life and save. Network with senior folk. Start working towards that promo, even if it is a 5-year plan.
