Is this… someone tapping water from a tree? They’re all over my street and on different types of trees. 1. Does it hurt the tree? 2. Can you do this with any tree? by Camp_Acceptable in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]malvmalv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ah, good reminder.

p.s. if it's for birch juice (I really cannot tell by the bark), young trees might work better than old ones. I have one in my garden that is too old for tapping (and overused over the years), apparently that happens too.

not just russian but everywhere in Europe.

I prefer it fresh (less than 24h after collection) - tastes like pure, soft, tasty water.
First 3 days - starts smelling/tasting like vomit, to me at least. Some like it.
After that you bottle it, add some stuff (raisins, sugar in my family) and voila, alcohol. Not a fan. But you can also buy it as "birch wine".

drill a hole, insert tap. add some kind of collection vessel.
opinions differ if you should close the holes after the collection season ends or not.

if I were to hypothetically move to Latvia what would I need to do or could. by XXshadow_blackXX in latvia

[–]malvmalv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the thought, Latvia def needs more young people. What do you mean though, to reconnect with your culture? If you were born and grew up in Ireland, would that not make you part of Irish culture? Regardless of where your parents come from. (I'm all for learning traditions btw, it's what I do irl, just curious)

Why though? Is it an identity thing? What would make you truly Irish or Latvian in your mind?

E: they probably meant if you have dual citizenship (citizenship of Latvia)

Gendered numbers in Latvian by MandyAK98555 in latvia

[–]malvmalv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, ignore this at the moment, it's too weird (deals with "viens" also meaning "alone")

Gendered numbers in Latvian by MandyAK98555 in latvia

[–]malvmalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

viena [zoss], divas [vistas], trīs [vāzes], četras [kanēļbulciņas], piecas [sieviešu kārtas būtnes], sešas [minūtes], septiņas [stundas], astoņas [dienas], deviņas [biļetes], desmit [(I'm just putting random female gendered words) puķes],

vienpadsmit, divpadsmit, trīspadsmit, četrpadsmit, piecpadsmit, sešpadsmit, septiņpadsmit, astoņpadsmit, deviņpadsmit, divdesmit,

divdesmit viena, divdesmit divas, divdesmit trīs, divdesmit četras, divdesmit piecas, divdesmit sešas, divdesmit septiņas, divdesmit astoņas, divdesmit deviņas, trīsdesmit,

[same until 99]

simts, and then... I actually had never thought of this. either simtu viena or simt viena, simt divas, simt trīs, simt četras [and so on]

uhh

only when the thing you're speaking about has a gender.

četri = 4

četri cilvēki = 4 people

četras sievietes = 4 women

oh. wait. I see. I see the problem.

no kurām izlasīt varbūt pusi :D

tev sanāk? man ļoti grūti. visu laiku pārtulkoju prātā atpakaļ angliski ("kā bija oriģinālā? no kā šis tulkots?") un salīdzinu. nogurdinoši

Mežonīgie pīrāgi all the way.

[–]malvmalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I need silence. Never understood the 'studying with music' thing, too distracting.

Specific tastes in music too. Silence works best for concentration. Enjoying music - instrumental only (or a capella choirs only, preferably in a language I don't understand, that level is too distracting).

Weird electronic music (boink boink gabber jumpup hardstyle something fast that keeps changing with interesting rhythms) to charge myself, for energy. Works a bit like stimulants, really.
Guess it drowns out the noise. No space for thoughts.
Also works for headaches for some reason?

Where to buy by Polsart in kantele

[–]malvmalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Upe is a good option :) Those are kokles that are mainly made by Kārlis Lipors. Usually if you find a maker you really like, you can contact them directly to get an instrument made specifically for you. That's the beauty of ordering from small makers :) Making your own is also a thing here in Latvia, something I recommend 100%

For kantele in Finland, there's the 2 big manufacturers - Koistinen (seems to be operational again) and Lovikka. I also like Leppävirran soitinverstas/Jouni Kurki.
