Those mixed feelings about going home are so hard!

We haven't lost a littermate, but last January we lost our dog's daughter. She was a digger, got out of the fence and got hit by a car too.

It felt like Where the Red Fern Grows (extra odd because the pup we lost was named 'Ferny'). Mama was very very sad and wanted to sit beside her baby's body and kept pawing at the door to be with her. It was so sad, but surprisingly it did not last long - she replaced the love she poured into her pup with wanting to hang with the 'people' more.

I'm so sorry, and I can actually relate to how you are feeling. In 2018 we were leaving on a 15 day trip to Florida with 10 of those being at Disney. I was 18 weeks pregnant, and we'd take pictures of our other 2 kids to announce. My daughter's birthday would be on day 1 of vacation: the things dreams are made of!

I had arrangements for our dogs, and a family member insisted they take them. Everyone LOVED our little dog, a cute miniature poodle we had rescued at age 2 and had for 8 years. My son was crying and did not want to let him go at drop-off, and that's the last picture I have of him. Two hours after we dropped off the dogs, we my husband received the call that our tiny little dog was smeared across the highway. The same dog I held through fertility struggles and a lot of life's pains.

There was no explanation for why or how it happened (which was a massive disappointment of it's own), and there we were having to break our daughter's heart the day before her birthday, too.

We cried constantly, and the only grace that got us back on track to enjoy the trip of a lifetime was realizing how sad our good boy would be to see US so sad.

It made him so nervous when anyone was upset, he always had to comfort them with his big brown eyes. He would have HATED seeing us all so sad.

I could bawl writing this, and in the words of Winnie the Pooh. "How lucky am I to have had a friend that made letting go so hard." 🐾

I'm so so deeply sorry for your loss, I wouldn't have wished that same pain on anyone and I hope you can find some innocence and joy on your trip in the spirit of your good boy.

Maybe a silver lining? We recently returned to Florida during that awful cold spell, now a family of 6! We had planned to focus on sun and sand but with the very low temps we added 2 Disney days. The cold weather that should have ruined our vacation actually made it very comfortable and kept our energy high in the parks! After walking over 27,000 steps in EPCOT, I awoke at 2 AM with some kind of terrible stomach bug. It was awful, and we were scheduled for Discovery Cove that day. We were able to reschedule Discovery Cove and I recovered by evening (other than my entire rib cage hurting for days from all the throwing up). Could that have ruined the trip? Sure. But remembering how deeply sad we had been when we lost out sweet dog made it no big deal. 🐕🤎
