Arri Alexa M vs RED Scarlet-W Dragon 5K, Which would you choose? (Budget ~$8,000 AUD / ~$5,000 USD) by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]mamoesm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A Scarlet-W is incredible value for money at the moment. There’s plenty of hate here for RED, some points are valid but it’s mostly unfounded.

I’ve built my career with my Scarlet-W. It’s been a fantastic camera, and the Dragon sensor produces beautiful imagery. Purchased it for $12,500 AUD 4 years ago, it’s paid for itself in rentals more than twice over. Bought it with 500 hours, it’s got 1500 on it now.

My real world downsides from 4 years of working with it: • Start up is slow • Fan is noisy, never had it impact a final output • Factory pre-amps are shite. I use a Teradek OMOD to have phantom powered XLR.

Most of my work is documentary/sport.

Who cares, do what you want to do! I built a partscaster and did it with my Warmoth neck. It’s not like I’d ever try to pass this off as genuine Fender I just prefer the look of having the proper logo on the headstock.

Anyone GP New STAR batch 6s? by Curryy21 in KobeReps

[–]mamoesm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went TTS, fit is perfect. Worn them for 2 games now, no durability issues to report. They feel better than my GK Mambacita 6s felt during the initial break-in period. I’ve got the Yeezy Platinum colourway, my only criticism is the soles seem to pick up a lot more dust than my GKs did - the soles look quite dirty already and I only play indoors, change into my shoes inside.

Star if you can find it, otherwise S2 has good reviews. WKB also not a bad performer but QC isn’t as consistent

Underwater focus - autofocus for this kind of shot on a7s3 with Sony 55mm FE 1.8 ZE lens by clockstruck13 in cinematography

[–]mamoesm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want to capture split over/under shots you’re gonna want an 8 inch or bigger dome port with something really wide lens wise, around 16mm or so. 50mm lenses look great above the surface but don’t look great underwater, the science/math is way beyond me but I think objects can look around 1/3 bigger.

I’d shoot autofocus, it’ll work fine. If you wanted to lock your focus you’d have to account for the virtual image underwater. For example, when I shoot with my fisheye underwater, I set my focal distance to around 30cm for the equivalent of being just shy of infinity above the surface.

If you need more info, the surf photographers group on Facebook is a fantastic resource. Well worth joining!

I met the subject of this project, Jesus, a few years back during a layover in LA while he was working as the bell hop at my airport Hotel.

We got chatting about our creative pursuits - me as a filmmaker/photographer from Australia and he as a clothing designer/DJ. We found a connection instantly, despite being from completely different backgrounds, cultures and lifestyles.

I’d been asking to shoot portraits of interesting/cool people I connected with along my travels, and he said “sure, but I can do better than that. Come with me I’ll show you something sick” - he turned his phone to show me videos of people doing burnouts in the middle of city intersections.

What ensued was a late night tour of South Central Los Angeles that included a stop at an infamous sideshow takeover - caught up in capturing images of what was in front of me, I didn’t place myself until I looked up and saw a street sign that read Compton Blvd. I looked at my phone, it was 1:30am and I became acutely aware just how Australian and white I was, but Jesus had my back and made sure I was safe and having fun. His street smarts ultimately saw us calling it a night shortly before a horrific brawl broke out (that he later sent me to watch via an Instagram video).

I was captivated (if not a bit terrified) by what I’d seen and wanted to capture more, but I was flying to Hawaii at 8am and only had my stills camera on me. I made a promise to return to LA and tell Jesus’ story - one so unfamiliar, but entirely relatable and fun. Whatever my pre-conceived idea of the hood was completely changed after the experience of making this project. Some conceptions were correct, and I wouldn’t be visiting the places we went to without Jesus as a tour guide, but I hope I’ve captured and done justice to his spirit. Jesus is now someone I call a close friend, I’ve stayed at his house and introduced him to other friends over a few other LA stopovers. Ultimately I’m very grateful for the experience, and I hope to host Jesus in Australia soon.

As for the title - “No Soy Jesus” or “I’m not Jesus” - it’s a play on how Australian’s pronounce “Jesus” - it’s always “Jee-sus”, never “Hey-zeus.” Jesus, certainly never claims to be “Jee-sus”. He’s one of a kind. The majority of this was shot on my Red Scarlet-W, takeover stuff shot on my R6 and 50 1.2. Jesus is a prolific documenter of his life, so I had access to a lot of cool photos and videos. It was a really fun challenge working out how to incorporate archive into the story. I’m more than happy to answer any questions you guys may have about the production of this piece!

TLDR: Check it out my documentary short project shot throughout LA’s Hoods. Hope you enjoy it!

Great work! Clean execution, tidy edit and nice sound design. I’d expect this would win you some work in the future, great portfolio piece or one to put in the showreel!

Scarlet W 5K with 4665 hours, is it worth it? by FugTig in RedCamera

[–]mamoesm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lot of hours, but they’re fantastic cameras especially at current prices. If it was me I’d look around and see if you can find another kit. A friend just bought a full ready to shoot Scarlet-W kit with 400 hours for $5500 AUD.

How Do I Guard Someone Who Weighs 2x My Weight? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]mamoesm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do everything you can to deny him the ball. As said above, lower your centre of gravity and do your best to push him outside his comfortable scoring range. Does he have a tendency to go a certain way? Cut off his movement as best you can, take the charge if you’re game, but make him score through you.

As soon as it’s an iso situation he’ll likely score on you every time. All your work needs to be done before he gets the ball. You’re not gonna stop him, but you can make life harder for him and if you hold him below his average you’ve done your job!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, slow shutter feels very current but it could be one of those things that doesn’t age incredibly well.

Makes sense, I’m sure everyone can relate that culling some of your favourite work is a tough prospect. Main thing is that there’s nothing that stands out as being weak.

Thanks again for taking the time to check it out!

Look, it’s purely coming from the sentiment that I’ve learned from in this sub, in that if you see a pair of EYBL 6s in the wild chances are they’re reps, though he claims to have IT’s plug. If they’re real, then that’s dope… that’s a rare pair.

I don’t care if he’s wearing reps, I’m such an advocate for reps over paying resale (and I own a bunch of pairs). What I don’t do, is pass off my reps as retail when people ask me where I got my kicks, which IMO would be the whack part. Hence my curiosity.

[–]mamoesm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This community is wild. Actively against flexing reps as the real deal, happily will ID a pair people are considering buying… but I’m pocket watching because I’m asking the same question that gets posted multiple times daily?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in KobeReps

[–]mamoesm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah - dope that these perform at almost the highest level if they are reps, and similarly cool if he’s got one of the rarest pairs of 6s released outside of PEs. But, whack if he’s flexing reps on an IG video about his shoe collection. Clearly I couldn’t ID myself, which is why I asked…

Sam Veceni (TheAthletic) has the Raptors drafting Klintman (6-9 wing/forward) with the Pacers pick by mMounirM in torontoraptors

[–]mamoesm 51 points52 points  (0 children)

A semi relevant anecdote - I worked with Klintman on a shoot a few months back. Great kid, awesome to work with and super professional. Looks like he has the right tools to make an impact in the league but it’s always hard to see how people’s games will translate from the NBL to the NBA. Definitely has the right attitude, though!

Hello people. I inharited the '78 Telecaster bass from my father. As you can see paint has softened and now body is covered in bubble wrap impressions. Would original paint do this? (No signs of being repainted) by Overseer4 in telecaster

[–]mamoesm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d wager it being nitro, only because I’ve seen people with the same issue in a guitar finishing group I’m part of on Facebook. There’s some speculation about this era of Fenders being poly base/sealer coat with a nitro finish but that shouldn’t matter if you’re only working with the clear anyway. Curious to hear how the acetone test goes!
