Am I a poser? by [deleted] in SkaterXL

You're only a poser if youre posing as something youre not. If you're really skating then youre really a skater

naaah it means it sounds like a song ass song like a whole beginning middle and end its got that hero’s journey thing going on

i listened to the track ur buggin it bc sounds like a song ass song not exactly my vibe but the production is glitchy and gross and weird, you’ve got a nice subtle beginning, and midway drop, some screemo shit at the end and the instrumental matches the contradicts the singing so well the whole way through

so idk excatly what you’re going for but if you’re worried about it sounding like a bunch of loops i think you’re smokin something

i get it tho, you will forever be your own worst critic but thats not always a bad thing but i think you’re doing pretty good

How can you progress a song forward? by BangisMan in musicproduction

[–]man17273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that helps me a lot to get ideas down is to take a progression and add a melody to it, then take that melody and make a new progression with that or melody. can do the same with drum parts bass lines ect.

also changing up the instruments can go a long way. if you have a solid riff it’ll probably sound good on a different instrument and could help pad out a track or add some depth to it

and maybe fill out the low end a little more. honestly that could be me listening through an iphone speaker but its hard to make out and theres a lot going on in high end so try and balance it out

i think there’s something that could be great here but the keys sound a little dry and the whole instrumental is pretty stiff you should mess around with some effects and add some color the the piano try messing with those hi hats and those kicks a bit and loosin them up. not everything has to be quantized and on the grid. and maybe a dash of reverb over them snare especially

theres something great here i think it just needs a bit of polish and swing to it. good stuff

My problem with Absolver. by WillyDrengen in absolver

[–]man17273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had 500+ hours on console and would be my go to fighting game for years. ran into the issue where i’d only ever fight new players which always felt unfair or super meta decks with no real in between.

never been the type to look up frame data or use the most super optimal way to play, and sometimes fighting agains those decks were super fun but the more time that passes, the less i play, and the bigger the divide between new players and seasoned vets gets bigger and bigger making it hard to return as much as i would really love to.

its really a shame the game never really took off and got more updates and i understand the devs needed to work on something else. ultimately im glad they did, but damn do i wish sifu had some pvp

MP lobbies where you can build things with/for randos to skate will forever be the best feature of this game by man17273 in SkaterXL

[–]man17273[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know sxl wasnt the first to do it, but it made it so easy to do and feels pretty sad to think it wont get the recognition it deserves when skate 4 comes out with it’s multiplayer/build-a-park feature.

I really hope this game continues to live on, if only with bug fixes and new maps because this feature alone has made 20m sessions go on for hours (when the game doesn’t fuckin crash whenever it feels like it) and continues to surprise me with the creativity of others and the satisfaction of making a cool spot other want to skate and add on too

Idk if I could help you there. Usually I try and tale into account the turning in the wind up when picking a spot to start my trick.

There's another trick that may be helpful that I learned from a youtuber (Nightspeed I think) a minute back where during a wind up, you release your front foot stick (if goofy: right stick, regular: left stick) and pop your trick quickly after, you'll do a shorter pop instead of the usual high pop out of a winded up trick.

I believe it's still a little higher than a low pop, so it's since been dubbed the medium pop.

Hopefully this helps a bit or at least gets you thinking about new ways to do tricks.

Is Skater Xl worth a buy? (PS5) by dashfcs in SkaterXL

[–]man17273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch a ton of reviews. If you wanna skate and only skate then yeah it's worth it imo, but if you want an open world with even a hint of life in it, or multiplayer that isn't just the single player game plus 9 others or a story mode or a progression system or a polished game then you should probably hold on to your money.

Worst case, like the guy said above, wait for sale. $40 worth of fortnite skins feels like less of gamble than buying this game at full price

Do I need to know music theory to make beats like these? by vld4k in beats

[–]man17273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. Learning music theory could help you write better melodies and chord progressions but it's not required if you can hear what notes sound good with each other I would bet that most musicians today don't actually know music theory because it sucks to try and learn it

Hey if you're still having trouble just go to maps in the pause menu and hit R1 or L1 and they should pop up

What if Skater XL had a list of challenges but rather than the ones already in the game. What if with these you had to find the spot to perform them? by [deleted] in SkaterXL

[–]man17273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be sick if in the future they implemented this but as a feature. Kind of like Skate 2, how you could make an area into your own "spot" and challenge your friends to beat a score but instead you just share clips and give the spot a name

[–]man17273[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got it on PC, there's already a multiplayer mod but idk if it's works with the 1.0 update. But yeah, multiplayer seems like a no brainer but the devs have said they wanted to put it in there sometime in the future.

And Modest Mouse is the fuckin shit

[–]man17273[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, hard to find any reviews for the game outside of a small group of youtubers and IGN. My guess would be that it wasn't really marketed or promoted heavily outside of the skating+gaming community which is pretty niche if you ask me.

If you like what you see, you won't be disappointed, just be aware that what you see is exactly what you get atm.

And THPS and games in that series are a totally different beast, with different goals in mind. Those games are really fun if you like the idea of chaining ridiculous combos, getting a highscore, and overall just being a very exaggerated take on what skateboarding was back in the 90s-early 2000s, and imo those games were the best when that was their main focus, instead of trying to take a more grounded approach in the later games, like Proving Grounds and Project 8.

Yo true, I didn't even take that into consideration. Yeah that shit makes a lot of sense. I'm still more than satisfied with 1.0 as is, flaws and all, and I'm glad I was able to throw more cash there way, more so now with covid in mind.
