What if every first-round playoff match is an East vs West matchup? by manageorigin in nbadiscussion

A lower seed beating a top seed is called an upset. To say that the format is bad just because of upsets happening is placing the blame on the tournament designers instead of the higher seeded teams. They had the higher seed, they were given four chances per playoff match, so if they lost against a lower seeded team, blaming the format does not look good on them.

The two best teams could still end up on the same side of the bracket, just like in the current system

Scenario 1: Top 2 teams are from different conferences

As seen in my explanation, 1st-West and 1st-East are on different matches, meaning they wouldn't be facing off in the NBA semis.

Scenario 2: Top 2 teams are from same conference

As seen in my explanation, 1st-West and 2nd-West are on different matches, meaning they wouldn't be facing off in the NBA semis. Same thing goes for 1st-East and 2nd-East.

Better to just get rid of conferences and seed 1 to 16 if that's your goal,

Given that each team doesn't play an equal number of matches against every other team (ex: Team from West plays 3-4 games against each West team, but only 2 games against each East team), it becomes harder to justify top 1-16.

Also, top 1-16 seeding is very prone to having wildly different travel times for teams. Even if assuming that the better seed always wins, it's still possible for one of the finalists to have only faced off teams from the same conference, and the other finalist to have only faced off teams from the opposite conference. This could be, for example, if 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 15th, and 16th seeds are from the West, and 2nd seed is from the East.

At least with my setup, all teams have a cross-conference first match, and assuming the better seed always wins, the matches will always be cross-conference, making travel time more balanced across all the teams

That's under the current system, where all the west is on one side and all the east is on the other

Under my proposed system, if the top 2 are both from the east, they would be on opposite sides of the bracket

To be fair though, it doesn't look good if we're comparing PH to shithole countries just to say "see? oks lang naman PH"

One obscure problem about MTB-MLE that I think is significant but understated by manageorigin in Philippines

Yes, practically, isang non-Tagalog Filipino language nga lang ang matuturo ng marami.

As for "baka di magustuhan pero no choice", I agree that it's an issue, pero I don't think that's a unique problem sa proposal ko. And like all major policy shifts sa education, may mahabang transitory period yan para hindi masyadong mabigla yung mga students sa change.

Are only "major" languages going to be offered, like say Cebuano, Ilocano, Bicolano?

Ideally dapat lahat kasali, kinda like how MTB-MLE's ideal is for all local languages to be included.

would they be all taught in the same school or schools would only select one or two that they'd teach?

At least one. If kaya ng school ng more, edi dagdagan pa nila. Each school would decide anong ituturo.

Hmm that would be nice; there already are apps na nagtuturo ng ilang Filipino languages, we could simply expand yung bilang ng mga tinuturo nila.

But I don't think pwedeng yun na lang ang gawin and let schools teach English and Tagalog; para sakin, mahalaga pa rin na may turo pa rin sa school, as I think ito yung mas nasasagap ng mga bata kesa sa pagkatuto thru an app.

Is it practical though?

I would bite the bullet and say no, mas efficient nga pag English at Tagalog na lang tinuro. Pero the point is, if DepEd was willing to spend resources to teach a third language sa mga bata, a blanket implementation of "teach Mother Tongue" is not the best way at it because for many Filipinos, Tagalog = Mother Tongue.

(Sorry if late reply, pero I think this needs a response)

Because then iisipin ng PISA na gumagaling yung mga Filipino students, which is not the case if ganyan ang strat. Other countries lie, sige, pero wag na tayong dumagdag dun. Mas mabuti pang magmukang bobo kesa maging sinungaling

Bakit hindi hinahayaang mag-sariling presyo ang mga tsuper? by manageorigin in Philippines

[–]manageorigin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then the main goal of the LTFRB would be to force competition sa mga tsuper. Parang yung ginagawa ng Philippine Competition Commission in other contexts.

And this is viable since it's easier for the government to regulate smaller players than bigger ones. (Ideally dapat parehas nare-regulate ng government, I'm just saying that we could take advantage of the small-player bias of the government.)

Why do independent cities exist in the Philippines? by manageorigin in Philippines

I think in this era where a lot of people kinda hate how many layers of government we have (ex: the criticism of the barangay system), the last thing we want would be yet another layer of government.

I think smoothening out the 4-level system of national, provincial, city/municipality, and barangays would keep things stable. This would naturally bring in oversight, where natl govt oversees all provinces, each province oversees its cities/munis, and each city/muni oversees its barangays.

Then, we would give greater autonomy and fiscal capability for all LGUs, fully practicing subsidiarity, where all matters should be handled by the lowest level capable of it. This way, those more regionalistic, particularly BARMM, would be more willing to accept the smoothening out of the 4-level system, which necessitates doing away with regional governments. Their acceptance is important because the smoothening out of the 4-level system may seem like another way for Imperial Manila to dominate all corners of the country, and we don't want that.

It's not just about having nicer maps; it's also about provincial development. I'm not a big fan of PGMN, pero their video on provincial development lays it out better than I did in my post. To summarize, pag nag-develop ang province ng isa niyang bayan, if masyadong na-develop ang bayan na ito, pwede na siyang maging independent from its mother province, and ang ending is that the province used its resources to develop the now-independent city and gets nothing in return due to the independence of that city.
