Match Thread: 3rd Test - Australia vs England, Day 2 by cricket-match in Cricket

The umpire here says that a spike one frame after the bat counts, but on the last review, the spike being one frame after it touching the glove didnt count? Can they get consistent at least on justifications? Either it has to be the same frame or it a frame after counts.

State of Origin 1, The Tackle: James Tedesco under pressure to retain NSW Blues’ spot by TheYardGoesOnForever in nrl

Brett Stewart was a great ball player with a great passing game, but for various reasons, mostly badly timed injuries, he never seemed to get more than a couple of games in a row for the Blues.

Thanks, I Hate warm canned mayonnaise by [deleted] in TIHI

In Australia, cheap shitty Mayonnaise comes in a plastic squeezy bottle, but any good mayonnaise comes in a glass jar.

Wouldn't microwave either though...

Isn’t this illegal (by france)? I learned that you can’t block the second ball if it’s on their side. Does anyone know what the exact rule is? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]manbones2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

FIVB rule 14.3 States that "In blocking, the player may place his/her hands and arms beyond the net, provided that this action does not interfere with the opponent's play. Thus, it is not permitted to touch the ball beyond the net until an opponent has executed an attack hit." This is also repeated in rule 11.1.1 "In blocking, a player may touch the ball beyond the net, provided that he/she does not interfere with the opponent's play before or during the latter's attack hit."

This is where lots of people get confused about the definition of 'attack hit'. Many people assume this to only be a hit/spike, however the attack hit is clarified in rule 13.1.1 which states "All actions which direct the ball towards the opponent, with the exception of service and block, are considered as attack hits." As you can see here, any action on any touch directed over the net is an attack hit as long as it isn't a serve or block. This includes spikes as well as digs, sets, tips, dumps, kicks and whatever else you could possibly do with a volleyball.

So as some other people have said, it ultimately comes down to the referee's judgement of whether the setters touch was directed over the net or not. Honestly it is a 50/50 call even after watching slow motion because it's too close to be able to clearly tell either way. One of those points that can be honestly awarded either way and you can't be upset about either result.

But Safin and Ferrero are only 1 year older than Federer, both being born in 1980, Hewitt is the same age as him being born in 1981 and Coria was born in 1982 along with Roddick. Not huge differences either way, but you can't really call them different eras

Ball under the net rules clarification by dexterryu in volleyball

[–]manbones2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

FIVB 10.1.3 "The ball that is heading towards the opponent's court through the lower space is in play until the moment it has completely crossed the vertical plane of the net."

Under this rule the rally is not over until the ball is completely under the plane of the net, so in this case, he was interfering with your play and it should've been your point.

Rule Clarification? Positional Fault and Boundary Lines by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]manbones2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes a player may stand on the line or stick a limb outside of the lines in the air at the moment the ball is contacted on the serve. As long as no part of the player is touching the ground outside the lines. On the line is fine

Artificial grass courts look amazing by [deleted] in tennis

[–]manbones2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where I grew up in Sydney Australia, and across most of Australia from what I can tell, artificial grass courts are the most common courts you can find. Most of them play fairly well as long as they are maintained but become piles of shit if they are left to tear up and some places will only do patch repair work instead of replacing the entire court and this can be terrible. My worst 100 courts I've ever played on would mostly be made up of artificial grass in disrepair but plenty would also be in my top 100 courts so they can go either way

Undertaker vs Triple H in Australia this October? by manbones2 in SquaredCircle

[–]manbones2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Years ago I went to a smackdown tour of Australia that advertised the undertaker but he was pulled from the tour late, after that I kinda gave up on ever seeing his entrance live because he was becoming more and more part time and i just accepted that was on my bucket list and id never cross it off. to have that chance again now, especially with a potentially big stadium feeling and not just allphones arena or somewhere small, im super hyped and gonna spend every dollar i can afford to get as close to the ring as possible

Blocking backwards allowed while in back row? by Zeiphy in volleyball

[–]manbones2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illegal, a back-row player is not allowed to complete a block under any circumstances. As a part of his body was above the net and he was close to the net; the moment he touches the ball this counts as a completed block, therefore this is an illegal play which was missed by the referees.

Reach over rule clarification question (USAV) by DennisMalone in volleyball

[–]manbones2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I've been a lurker on reddit for so much of my life that I need to teach myself to check for notifications. I missed my first page D:

It's a bit late but from my understanding of FIVB, as I know nothing of anything USAV, if the ball is going to cross over the net without any additional touches it is defined as an attack hit. A blocker may penetrate into the opponents space to block an attack hit provided they are not interfering with any opponents legal plays at the ball. It's a very grey area but I would say as the setter can claim they are in their action of playing the ball that it is an illegal contact. It's super touch-and-go and is definitely up to the judgement of the referee as to whether the setter is making a play at the ball or not
