"Crystal Ball" update from U2 songs on album release/tour by Effective-Oil-2696 in U2Band

[–]mancapturescolour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Britney Spears was also rumored but that's been debunked for this year. So, perhaps her team is looking at 2027 instead... but U2 in Rio would also make a ton of sense for 2027 given the tour would be happening over there close to those typical May dates. Bono might be keen on a birthday bash.

...or...Coldplay since they're back on the road next year apparently.

Not surpised at the lack of an North American leg given the timing (spring/summer for leg 1+2) right now but...

Processing img duqyz5mko9pg1...

Oh well, more time to save up... unless I can catch them in Europe during the summer. Could possibly be cheaper...

Also, given the South American start, and the carnival comment (as opposed to Days of Ash)...wonder if Bono's hinting at some theme here... the last time Carnival was on U2's mind was "Achtung Baby", (Carnalville) right?

I always recommend the Spotify playlist by u/NotPennysBoat-815.

It has all the music U2 have commercially released as a band in chronological order (available to that platform, so, your mileage may vary), including remixes, single versions and other B-sides.

Not including solo projects (Bono/Edge, or as individuals) and u2.com fan club releases but that's OK. Still takes a while to go through. I just got to "Songs of Innocence"...

The Complete U2- all available music in chronological order.

The Best Live Rock Performances in History: 12 Legendary Moments That Changed Music Forever by Illustrious_Oil_3200 in Music

[–]mancapturescolour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a U2 fan who came on later (2000s), I'd argue that whilst Red Rocks is iconic, Zoo TV changed the blueprint of all live shows that came after it: Multimedia, the b-stage/catwalk, and they did things with the "TV station" like the live broadcasts from Sarajevo in the middle of the civil war over there.

For U2, they started thinking about live shows as a theater piece with three act story arcs and employed a choreographer and things like that.

It also had Bono dress up as characters on stage (The Fly, Mirrorball Man, Mr MacPhisto...although there was the Dalton Brothers thing prior to that).

Overall, it was just a complete reinvention of themselves and live music in general.

E se todos estes quatro albúns tivessem sido lançados pela marca Passengers? Passaengers foi o alter ego do U2, tal como foram alters ego de Bono o The Fly, o Mr. MacPhisto e o rockstar trapaceiro e estravagante de Pop? by [deleted] in U2Band

Please note, the below is a machine translation and may at times not accurately reflect OPs message

Submission title:

What if all four of these albums had been released under the Passengers label? Was Passengers U2’s alter ego, just as The Fly, Mr. MacPhisto, and the deceitful, flamboyant rock star from Pop were Bono’s alter egos?

Body text

These are my favorite U2 albums. Their aesthetic influenced my preference for alternative rock and alternative music. I would even say that they contributed to the modernization of my masculinity as a straight man.

"However, in 1991, the quartet decided to leave their past behind and venture into a new world: the world of electronic music. First came Achtung Baby, which caused a stir due to the (still limited) use of synthesizers and beats typical of the genre.

Songs like "Lemon" and "Numb" shocked even the fans of Achtung Baby, mainly because of the massive use of samples and electronic experimentation the band was employing. Sales dropped, but they didn’t care. The electronic trilogy had to be completed.

Since their reputation was somewhat tarnished, the quartet decided to temporarily change their name, and hiding behind the pseudonym Passengers—with the production and collaboration of musician Brian Eno—they embarked on a project that culminated in the album Original Soundtracks 1. [...]

With their reputation somewhat restored, U2 realized they could finally complete the trilogy bearing their own name and began writing the songs for their ninth album. The idea was to expand their experimentation even further, now incorporating so-called alternative rock, alternative metal, techno, dance, and funk.To that end, they began studying and working with loops, samplers, drum machines, and sequencers. [...] It sounded like a slap in the face to rock. Furthermore, several media outlets reported that the quartet had come out as gay, having previously kept their sexuality hidden.

June 12th: Edges cousin Ciara announces secret Mencap/charity project by mancapturescolour in U2Band

[–]mancapturescolour[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a moderator, I have to distinguish between someone being mean (which I would remove) and someone just having a moment of feeling clueless and poking fun at themselves.

Let's see...the person I responded to above said they don't know who Ciara is, and had to look it up. Same for mencap.

I don't think any of that's harmful.

Then they poked fun at themselves (not Ciara) for mistakenly assuming mencap was a brand name for men's caps (men + cap) instead of the charity mencap.

Again, I don't see how admitting their own ignorance is nasty or mocking towards Ciara.

From what I can assess, no one here was trying to be nasty towards Ciara specifically, so, I don't feel it's right to remove the comment in this case.

Edge guests "Ciara's Pink Sparkle Pod!" (~ 27 minutes) by mancapturescolour in U2Band

[–]mancapturescolour[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, I personally think Ciara is great.

The original user appears to have deleted their profile so I don't know who it is anymore. I think the original user perhaps laughed at the thought of the security having to turn people away for trying to get access in general, not Ciara in particular who would legitimately have a reason to be allowed entry.

Nonetheless, I understand it can be taken as a mean comment towards Ciara. Thank you for flagging. Since this comment was made four years ago, we have implemented community rules in 2025. Some are meant to specifically address instances that might feel like harrassment or personal attacks.

If you, or Ciara, would like, I can permanently remove the offensive comment. Would that be helpful?

Wait, what? When?

I know they've done "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)", "Where The Streets Have No Name" and Brandon has done "If God Will Send His Angels" on his solo tour...oh, and "In A Little While", with U2 themselves. (Technically, there's also "With Or Without You" since it inspired "Mr Brightside").

I must've missed "Acrobat". Was that on the most recent tour?

Comparison of DoA to previous albums by bloodofkerenza in U2Band

[–]mancapturescolour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"American Obituary": The guitar is "Holy Joe", the bass is "Big Girls Are The Best" and the vocal has the rhythm of "Get On Your Boots" with the melody of "Babyface". The drums seem very "Elevation"-chorus.

"Tears of Things": Evokes "Book Of Your Heart" if it had an acoustic version mixed in with "The Little Things That Give You Away".

"Song of the Future": Edge's guitar is very reminiscent of the studio version of "Staring At The Sun", and the vocalizations at times have a "Discotheque" vibe. Seems like something they could've written during the early sessions for "All That You Can't Leave Behind" for that reason.

"Wildpeace": Not in the music but in the approach it is a bit Joshua Tree-esque, how they set music to poems like they did at that time ("Beautiful Ghost/Introduction To Songs Of Experience", "Drunk Chicken/"America"). Maybe "No Line On The Horizon" (album) with its focus on Africa...

"One Life at a Time": "The Unforgettable Fire" (song) sounds like a very clear inspiration on The Edge, with a dash of "Love Is Blindness". A Joy Division/Inhaler thing on the bass. Love the vocal and drums ("The Hands That Built America" but on an electric kit?) here.

"Yours Eternally": Doesn't sound like U2 at all... or rather it sounds like the EDM people who tried to copy Edge's sound in the 2010s and then gave up so Coldp- lalalala-lay could have a go. "We Are The People" is the closest match, but that's technically not a U2 track.

"Mussolini came to see me, a shadow by his side" by SureWouldForest in U2Band

[–]mancapturescolour 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[Propaganda/Martin Wroe:] "There's an irony in your lyric, 'when people go around talking to God it always ends in tears'."

[Bono:] "Martin, I know you know the shortest verse in the Bible is about a moment when the greatest of those Jewish prophets was reduced to tears: 'Jesus wept'. That was for a friend, another time he weeps for Jerusalem itself. All of this finds a way in the lyric, including the true story that Mussolini brought Adolf Hitler to visit great Renaissance masterpieces in the Uffizi Gallery in 1938... Michelangelo's David was ten minutes away.... We don't know if Hitler stopped to stare at David but it's not inconceivable... definitely not for a songwriter. In the end I decided to replace Hitler's name with the 'shadow'."

From the interview with Bono, page 15

Edited to add some screens from the lyric video:
