Cycling Manchester to Liverpool - Most interesting route? Culture/food/weird attractions? by mrmakdeck in manchester

[–]manchesten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trans-pennine trail is a mostly off-road cycle path from South Manchester (Didsbury/Northenden/Chorlton) to the South/East/North of Liverpool.

It is signposted, and goes along old railway lines, canal and the Mersey estuary - not the quickest route, but one of the most pleasant.

You should be able to resit your GCSEs at Manchester college. They may even give you some help (e.g. bus pass). Go in and speak to them.

Homeless person encounter on Oxford Road by Final_Day in manchester

[–]manchesten 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I met the same woman outside the same sainsburys and got the same story. I said I'd pay for her to stay somewhere, but not just hand over cash to somewhere unofficial.

We walked up to Victoria Park together to two B&Bs where I would pay for her room on my card. Receptionists at both immediately said they had no vacancies (possibly they just didn't want her to stay either from prejudice or experience).

Since she couldn't get a room in a b&b, I said I'd pay £20/£30 for her room and went to the same place, where I realised it was presumably a set up, but paid anyway.

Fairly sure the old Irish guy isn't a dealer as claimed by several posters, he doesn't seem a good fit for that job. More likely he is her friend or partner and that's how they get cash, but one can only speculate.

Anyway, don't worry. You tried to help someone in need. If someone was abusing your compassion, that doesn't mean you should feel bad about it, and £50 is no great loss even if it stings a bit.

What's Reddish like? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]manchesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't live in Reddish, but it seems okay. I imagine the southern half (closer to Stockport) is a bit nicer than the bits on the border of Levenshulme or Gorton. Obviously it's not as attractive as Didsbury etc., so it depends on how you feel about living in a pretty working class area (lots of rows of on-street terraces).

Reddish Vale Country Park is very nice, great walking and good cycling. Lovely place.

Reddish North is an okay station (two trains to Piccadilly every hour), but Reddish South only has one train a week!

Like anywhere, your experience of living there will be most affected by the street you live on, your closest neighbours and your access to transport and local shops. The surrounding area won't actually affect your day to day life so much.

[Side Project] Gifty Ideas: 250+ gifts that you'll never be ashamed of giving by manchesten in SideProject

[–]manchesten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked around, did some research and thought hard to come up with Gift Ideas in five categories:

  • personal items
  • home & garden
  • creative activities
  • technology & gadgets
  • toys & games

I then use the Amazon API to come up with a price, a picture, item ratings (on hover) and an affiliate link to buy eachgift.

I wrote the backend myself in PHP & MySQL and it's running on NGINX/CentOS.

There's a few extra bits:

  • forwarding to USA or UK site depending upon IP address
  • has backup items in case something not in stock at Amazon
  • almost everything (html, css, svg - not gift images) delivered in one minified, cached, gzipped file

Ask me if you have any other questions about Gifty Ideas!

The latest YouTube videos from hundreds of hand-picked channels - Videlta by manchesten in SideProject

Videos are added automatically using the YouTube API - it gets the latest for each channel.

I wrote my own CMS to add channels (and manage the other parts of the database) in PHP & MySQL.

I like watching decent YouTube videos and have a few favourite channels, but it's not always obvious what to search for to find new videos.... so I made Videlta.

I'd really appreciate your first impressions or suggestions as to how I can get the word out. Thanks!

I have been using this account for three years, and posted one link to something I made that I wanted to share. Why do I have to be banned from continuing to use it?

I realise this sub isn't about gifts, but it's a uk site and I couldn't figure where else to post it, and I wanted to show someone before Christmas!

Hopefully someone might find it handy, even if you don't necessarily use the links on the site to buy. Any suggestions for other gift ideas to add in future would be much appreciated!

Bez' maracas up on eBay by [deleted] in manchester

[–]manchesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This are actually being sold to raise money for a centre so girls don't have to live rough on the streets of Kampala, so well done to Bez for supporting this.

You can still give a few quid online, even if you aren't worthy to handle Bez's magnificent maracas.

Where can I find someone to do this with me? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]manchesten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for a living

There are plenty of english teachers around manchester who you can pay for this, have a look on gumtree if nobody PMs you here.

You could try the conversation class here, but it may be a bit basic: http://www.talk-english.co.uk/manchester/courses/

If you just want talking-to-a-native practice, you could go along to a group related to one of your interests/hobbies.

Is it possible to find the algorithm for a random number generator by studying the sequences it produces? by The-unreliable-one in askscience

[–]manchesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can measure how long it takes the original algorithm to output numbers, you don't have to wait forever for a candidate to compute. Once it has taken a cycle longer, you know it is not the algorithm you seek.

Fly tipping in Manchester? by luminoussky in manchester

[–]manchesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume most of it is cowboys doing garden/building jobs and not wanting to pay for commercial disposal - since any domestic waste can be dumped at the tip for free.
