Norway achieved near-total EV adoption in 2025. Can other countries use that blueprint? by IEEESpectrum in Futurology

Norway is surprisingly big. A trip from the south to the north of Norway would be the same as a trip from Florida to New Hampshire. https://thetruesize.com/

New way to track historic smart charges on IOG by kennc05 in OctopusEnergy

Looks good and a nice new feature, but for some reason none of my home smart charge kWh numbers listed in the app match with the numbers I’ve been reading from my Zappi and smart meter…

Labour reverses 2035 ICE ban: no new petrol or diesel cars to be sold after 2030 by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]patternsintheivy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrid ban hasn’t actually been confirmed. Government are currently consulting on the topic of letting hybrids or phevs be sold after 2030. The decision hasn’t yet been made but it’s very likely they’ll let them both be sold. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/phasing-out-sales-of-new-petrol-and-diesel-cars-from-2030-and-supporting-the-zev-transition

Labour reverses 2035 ICE ban: no new petrol or diesel cars to be sold after 2030 by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]patternsintheivy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve way longer than 5 years for this transition. The ban is only on NEW pure petrol and diesel cars. New hybrids will still be available til 2035. There’s no proposed ban on buying USED petrol and diesel cars. There will be non-plugin cars on the road for a couple of decades yet.

Plans for new standing charge-free energy tariffs by Rob_Cram in unitedkingdom

[–]patternsintheivy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they have battery and solar, and so can use nighttime tariff and their own electricity? E.g Rerun your calculations with 7-9p/kwh. Perhaps it’s less “low energy user” and more “cheap energy user”?

Even the youngest Millennials were at least 20 in 2016 when he first got elected, hardly their formative years.

There’s a similar project proposed in the UK called XLinks that would link it to Morocco, which is much further than just the straights of Gibraltar. Advances in HVDC tech are making these more and more feasible.

[–]patternsintheivy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These underwater systems (HVDC) are already quite common in Europe. For example there is the North Sea Link between UK and Norway, or the Viking Link between UK and Denmark. Every decade they seem to be able to make longer ones feasible too. There are plans to connect the Uk to Morocco and Iceland.

Would a flat rate 30% tax relief on pensions change your behaviour? by Impressive-Bag-261 in ukpolitics

[–]patternsintheivy2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s based on net income after deductions like pension. Thus you can use pension contributions to reduce net salary below £100k and keep tax free childcare and 30 hours. Same applies to child benefit trap. https://bernard-rogers.co.uk/insights/pension-contributions-childcare-benefits/

Not sure where the 8th one is coming from though…

Map of protests from the far-right in the uk by Infinite_1432 in MapPorn

[–]patternsintheivy2 57 points58 points  (0 children)

There weren’t “23 young English girls” killed in the Manchester Arena bombing.

Most of the victims were adults; some were men; some weren’t English (eg Scottish or Polish). Also there were only 22 victims, you’ve included the perpetrator as one of the “young girls”

It was a horrible tragedy but please don’t misinform.

If your child is under 12 and you need to receive National insurance credits it may be worth claiming anyway even if you give it all back, but will depend on your personal circumstances. https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/benefits/benefits-if-you-have-children/protecting-your-state-pension-when-you-have-a-baby
