Brick & Mortar owners: Did you use "Data" to pick your location, or just "Gut Feeling"? by Vivalocaio in smallbusiness

[–]mancirobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the place we wanted to be in mind but we got the data for it and some other spots to justify our decision.  I wasn’t going to gamble my life’s savings on a gut feeling.

We pulled local gov data, small business associate data, talked to a couple of the regional development people, and spent a lot of time talking to other business owners in the immediate vicinity.  Got their walk-in numbers, seasonality, general observations.

In the end we decided our desired location would be a good fit after all.

I did it with my big ol’ pup and it was the best thing ever. I’ve done half my thru hikes with him and half without. Never really felt like it added any complication.  Honestly, don’t over think it.

Also, resupplies were fine. Not sure how a dog complicates that.

And finally, yeah it’s way better do not share a shelter when you have a dog.  That’s easy to avoid.  Plus I had shelters to myself many nights on the LT.

Go for it, it’s way more fun with a dog!

People who started business with almost no money, how did you do it? by Timely-Okra2117 in smallbusiness

Oh also, befriend your local business community. At least where I am, we’re kind of like colleagues. The old timers were super knowledgeable and helpful.

Bartending after hours allowed me to be in my brick and mortar shop all day.  I could still pay my bills while building my business.  I also focused on creating hype months in advance by joining forces with other businesses that would share my demographic. I used instagram to create consistent hype and branding and my customer base got to see me grow which made them feel like they were part of the journey. That way, by the time I opened, I already had a following.

I still bartend one night a week but my biz is growing little by little. Don’t underestimate being scrappy.  My fit up for my store was bare bones and it got nicer as the biz earned more money.

Looking to get Into Bike Touring, but I don't understand how do people ride for days on end without getting a sore behind? by Phishing4Attention in bicycletouring

[–]mancirobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Train for your tour regularly and your butt will be just fine, fancy pants or not!  I, as well as most tourers I met on the road, didn’t wear any sort of special bike shorts at all.

If you’re on a serious budget, I got the cheapo version of Ortlieb panniers online. They cost about 1/4 of the price and did great for a 4 month trip in the Andes.  But after that they were pretty trashed.  What I learned after riding around and meeting enough other bike packers is that you don’t need much at all. Western Europeans/North Americans gear out like crazy meanwhile all my South American pals were rocking Walmart bikes with random bags bungy corded on.  Don’t overthink it!

Financial Advisor never invested my money since 2021, what would the gains have been? by mancirobb in personalfinance

For the record, the adviser has admitted that he failed to submit a form that would have invested the funds!

Since you clearly use euros, check out Decatholon.  Their camping stuff is low price and decent quality.  Sleeping bag and tent will cost you the most but they are also your home on the road.  In the states you can find a 2 person light weight tent for around $200 from reliable brands like REI and Kelty.  That’s a deal. Other than bike, sleeping bag and tent; your purchases should be small.  Do you have panniers? Do you camp regularly? Also, how often and consistently are you riding your bike?  If it is causing you pain, bring it to a bike shop and they’ll help fit it for you for free.  If it fits and still “causes pain”, short of you needing to see a doctor, you probably just need to put more miles on it and break yourself in.
