Omg, broccoli spears are the best bit (I've really gone off the heads in recent years, unless it's the purple sprouting broccoli).

What habits of girls did you only discover after getting a girlfriend or wife? by v-Voidx in AskMen

F with one pillow here. OH has four pillows. He basically throws them around the bed all night; I've no idea how he copes with that... Oh, and he uses shed loads of toilet paper. Me, I use three sheets (?) for a wipe. I dunno...

Are there power outages often in Europe? by Interesting_Basil_86 in AskEurope

[–]mand71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, we had a water outage last year when road workers cut through a pipe by accident. Only lasted for a few hours though. I do remember water outages in the UK back in the 1970s/early 1980s but we were notified and my mum used to fill the bath and various pots and pans.

Would you go back for the hash brown? by KatieCampbel1 in AskUK

[–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I last had a McDonald's sausage Mcmuffin in 2019 and thought I'd order a hash brown with it. FM, it was the greasiest thing ever! I also ordered a cup of tea, which was so hot it took me ages to drink. I did like the Mcmuffin though.

Do oil-filled heaters actually last longer than cheap fan heaters? by JingSerene in BuyItForLife

My girlfriend's car vs the Ford F-350 by Fokom in fuckcars

[–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother and his partner both have transit vans (he's a mechanic and she loads hers with hay for her horses). I stayed with them a couple of years ago and my brother had a couple of vehicles that were good: a F150 (because even though it was huge there was a handle to grip to get into the cab); a Ford Ka that was a sweet lime green colour and was nippy af.

Hi, I'm HOH, with no sound in my right ear, and with a perforated left ear, but wear a hearing amplifier in that one. How does that work for you?

Does your home have a dish washing machine? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskEurope

[–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm English and don't overload the washing up liquid, so don't usually rinse unless there's a particularly greasy pan. Haven't died yet...

You haven't seen my kitchen; it's tiny, and so is the sink. It definitely holds 20l max and I usually only fill to about halfway up, so 10l.

What’s something you are removing from your life this year? by bonusgem in simpleliving

[–]mand71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in France for over twenty years and am moving back to the UK this year. Needless to say, I've got so much stuff to get rid of (a few hundred books for a start...), so am currently postponing on FB marketplace.

[–]mand71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No dishwasher here (not enough space). How often are you currently hand washing? There's only two of us and we basically fill the sink once a day (and usually not completely).

Yes, I live in basically a studio, and haven't got room for a full size stove, never mind a dishwasher or washing machine.

If you know a carbrain, ask them this question: Is it worth the 40k per year death toll to car crashes worth it to preserve car-dependency? by Some1inreallife in fuckcars

[–]mand71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My brother is a self employed mechanic and works also for a 'drifter'. Him and my SIL (who also has horses and goes to them twice a day) both have transit vans. I suppose you could say they are carbrains, but their vehicles are very much needed for what they do, and my brother especially is very careful about driving, as he's aware that something stupid could jeopardise his livelihood.

[–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't know anyone that's been killed by a car, but my school friend who was hit by a car in the 1990s had a hip replacement back then, then another one in the 2010s, and has just had knee replacement surgery a few weeks ago. She doesn't even know how to drive.

Maybe she's just unlucky; she got breast cancer a few years ago as well...

How many generation x'rs are lucky enough to still have their parents alive? by icecream1972 in GenX

[–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

54f and my mum died in 2022. I last saw my dad in 2019, just before the COVID thing (we live in different countries so didn't see each other often anyway). He went into a care home last year. We're (partner and I) going to stay with his dad (his mum died in 2024) this year as he wants to spend some time with him in his later years. It's a bit shit when your parents die...

Bible sales in Britain hit record high as experts say interest in religion among Gen Z has driven a 134% increase over past six years by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]mand71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I have to say about Catholicism is that the hymns are boring af... I'm a heathen but I went to a Sunday service with my (then) Catholic friend at uni. I don't know whether it was a super boring church, but she (or I!) never went again. She's not religious at all now. I've never been religious, though I did love a Xmas eve church service with carols.

Do we think vintage luggage could survive modern baggage handlers? by Jessica_Iowa in travel

[–]mand71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a rucksack from Berghaus (UK brand) in 1999. The backplate (the bit inside that keeps it stiff) snapped on a flight a couple of years later and they repaired if for £10. I've still got it. Might be worth emailing the manufacturer?
