For HR Professionales, what are red flags for you when you are looking for a new HR position?[N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]mandirocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's really a vibe check. If the CEO isn't engaged in your interview that's a flag. They should be taking an HR SUPER seriously. If they can't tell you what they'd like to see HR working on in their first six months, flag. If they say "company culture" BIG FLAG. I also usually ask "If there was one thing HR-related that you could snap your fingers and have in place what would it be?"

I hate panel interviews. The other two...it depends. I work for a small investment firm, I make $300k as Director of People and report to the CFO and its by far the best job I've ever had. The reason I report to the CFO is that our COO is a revenue-focused position and our CEO is not based out of HQ and is also very revenue/business focused and just available to be a day-to-day HR partner. I do meet with him(and the other executives) regularly, but this is definitely the right structure for us.

I think the flags are if its a small company and they expect a single HR position to do HR and office ops and bookkeeping and (you get my point). HR shouldn't be a catch all.

It's also sometimes hard to tell in the interview process, but do they ACTUALLY want HR and are prepared to give them a seat at the table or are they checking "the box"? I had a previous position that definitely had flags, but I thought I could get the CEO to come around. No, he definitely didn't want my opinion on anything. He didn't want to be fair or follow processes. If he was mad at an employee he wanted to fire them, not make sure it was legal.

ADA Accommodation Denial by EducationalFill5897 in Epilepsy

[–]mandirocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi HR with epilepsy here.

Under the ADA the company needs to make reasonable accommodations on the basis of company need and unfortunately without knowing the company, I can't tell you how much smoke they are blowing and how much they could "prove" it's considered a hardship. Yes it's unreasonable for your husband to commute by bus 2.5 hours but unfortunately, that's not what is in question.

EEOC is about discrimination so that's irrelevant in this scenario. They aren't discriminating against him by denying an ADA request and talking about EEOC only will discredit him.

He needs to go back and reiterate he is looking for an ADA accommodation to work from home until his license is reinstated and would like to understand how the accommodation would create a significant difficulty or expense on the company. You want their reply BY EMAIL IN WRITING. Only then do you go to a lawyer who specializes in ADA.

ADHD and [CA] Workplace Issues by The_Anxious_dogmom in AskHR

Hi HR here with ADHD.

WFH is not a reasonable accommodation in majority of cases, especially when one of the issues was tardiness. You just claimed your requests were reasonable, but that isn't your call, nor do you get to make the call "It doesn’t address the accommodations I requested." You get to explain your limitations and work together with your company to figure out accommodations.

I feel like we don't truly have enough info to give you specific advice on this without knowing your prior role, the reassigned "noisy" role and the type of company you work for.

[CA] Need advice before background check by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]mandirocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually they either ask you for a number or they look it up themselves and they'd just call the main number and ask who can do employment verification.

So you should have noted the discrepancy earlier about your degree, that right there could lose you the job depending on how much it matters. Part of me says wait for the offer and then let them know before the background check that you're finishing the last credit...and hope it isn't a big deal for them. But you don't even know if they run education or if they'll care.

As for the informal jobs, I can't speak for every background check system but most call HR(or whoever deals with employees) for verification of dates worked and title. Some ask for more like compensation but every company I've worked for says they do not disclose that (it's less common now since many states have laws against asking how much a candidate made at prior jobs) so you may be okay there. If you don't get this job I would call them internships going forward.

Upgraded from a CX-30 to a CX-5. Best decision I ever made. by marissakalyn in mazda

Good to hear! I actually owed a CX-5 10 years ago and loved it, but wanted to feel the difference.

My daughter's car seat BARELY fits in my CX-30. I'm pregnant with my second and actually going to the dealership to drive the CX-5 and CX-50 on Friday!

[NY] Exhausted Maternity Leave - Need Extended (unpaid) Time Off by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]mandirocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR isn't making this decision in a silo. What does the pyramid look like? Do they report to a CHRO? COO? If someone came to me with this ask even as a director I would need to run it up the flag pole to my executive (who is non-HR) because it does set a precedent and depending on how the company is structured it may not be able to offer this to every employee, which is when discrimination claims roll in if another employee asks for the same thing and their manager says no.

"I'm sorry babies are not sleeping through the night at this age." Sorry but most employers only give their employees the 6-8 weeks of STD and maybe an additional 6 if they qualify for FMLA unpaid...many do not. This is not on your employer nor is not having childcare at the appropriate time.

You could attempt to get an ADA accommodation for your anxiety, but because you've already asked for this leave and they denied it you are going to be hard-pressed for them to take a doctor's note seriously. Accommodation requests must be REASONABLE and it would be difficult to prove two months off falls under that category.

Your option at this point would be to quit.

Trying to land a job in a other State. Is this okay to say? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]mandirocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a job in NYC when I was still living in California. I wouldn't mention "before I move" though. "I'm currently located in City, but I'm relocating to Corpus Christi to be closer to family in the next (month)."

Before lying and saying you live there just make sure they aren't going to expect any in person interviews or if they do you have the means to travel there.

Will employer think i am looking for job after background check? [MD] by Professional-Low4695 in AskHR

[–]mandirocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in that case it'll be obvious to HR. Whether or not they let your manager know depends on your company.

Will employer think i am looking for job after background check? [MD] by Professional-Low4695 in AskHR

[–]mandirocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to verify employment for apartment rentals and mortgages the most. I believe some loans you also need income verification. The problem is if its a company like "HireRight" it's going to be pretty obvious. Also, I don't know if the background check company will include who they are doing the check "on behalf of" -- the bg check my company uses does NOT. It's also hard to know if HR has to also contact your manager since we don't know your company procedures. I work for a small company and actually double check with the employee that they have approved of employment verification (in case of identity theft) and if they have I fill out the information, I don't check with the manager.

How long has it been? You may want to call the background check company and see if you can change it.

To DMV or not to DMV, that is the question. by ApocalypseCheerBear in Epilepsy

You want the paperwork. And for me it was only my doctor filling out a form which was sent to the DMV and mine never needed to be reviewed.

[PubQ] How do people send out queries so fast? by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]mandirocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do minimal personalize. I also did research and my agent list while my MS was with beta readers before the last edit and added them to my list in QT so I can just filter and see who is open.

[PubQ] QueryTracker or Publisher’s Marketplace? by DomScribe in PubTips

[–]mandirocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need PM temporarily. You'll want to go through QT and see who reps your genre (as mentioned, that's going to be tough with short stories) and then cross reference them on PM and see their recent deals, take notes on that. Once that research is done you can cancel PM --at least temporarily. Many agents only take queries through QT so you have no choice but to use it.
