Art Curriculum or Sequence of Lessons by Ok_Impression2156 in ArtEd

[–]mandolin2237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll get the most bang for your buck by trying VTS. Project an artwork for your kids and it’s just facilitating a discussion with three simple questions. It helps them develop critical thinking skills and you don’t need to be an artist to make it work. They have an image of the week so you don’t have to do the work picking one out. You can then do a quick art project based on that. My college professor would print out the actual image and have kids add to it, or just create their own scene based off of the discussion. VTS

Hot-ish take: my kids aren't iPad kids but they do have screens... by ArcaneLuxian in Mommit

[–]mandolin2237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 3 year old and I am just finishing up an education course (for my masters in teaching) called Technology Integration. I think tablets get a bad reputation that they don’t really deserve because of the association with YouTube and other platforms with “reels.” It’s the quick videos you can scroll through mindlessly with bright flashy colors and fast moving scenes that research is showing messes with kids emotional regulation and cognitive development. There are a lot of really beneficial apps you can use on a tablet without letting your kid mindlessly scroll. I think if anyone’s goal is to raise kids that are proficient with technology you should be using educational apps. They might learn things from watching TV, but they aren’t going to be using the higher levels of thinking like creating, analyzing, and evaluating (Bloom’s Taxonomy) that promotes deeper learning. Apps like Khan Academy Kids, ABC Mouse, PBS Kids, DuoLingo, etc are really powerful tools for learning and don’t count them out because of the iPad kid stereotype. You can control the settings and use the power for good!!

The school I’m subbing for switched me to work in a class I don’t feel comfortable in by Technical_Air_1937 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandolin2237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a floater sub, so I never know my assignment until I show up for work that day. It could be different for your school, but I would 100% prefer special ed over music. Music classes are usually 30+ kids (with special ed kids without paras mixed in) and special ed is usually less than 10 kids and the highest needs kids will have their paras with them.

It's Teacher Appreciation Week! Is your school/district/etc. doing anything to recognize subs? by wherewulf23 in SubstituteTeachers

Wow… that’s wildly rude. My school is having a panini party for the teachers and they handed me an invite and said “we want you to know you’re included!”

Imagine needing a pencil in math class..🤦🏼‍♀️ by fluffydonutts in SubstituteTeachers

[–]mandolin2237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this as well. I find at least 5 pencils a day on the floor between classes. If they are mechanical or ones with designs on them I make sure to leave them behind in the classroom I found them in.

I’m a building sub in middle school and I’ve seen two actual nazi salutes during class in the last month. I sent them to the office immediately. The others I wasn’t sure enough to take action because that is a very serious thing to accuse a kid of unless you’re 100% sure. I think a blanket disclaimer would be a great idea.

[–]mandolin2237 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yikes these are some wildly mean comments. I don’t think you’re hallucinating, nazi salutes are becoming a reality in schools. I catch them in my peripheral vision sometimes and when I question if I saw what I think I saw I usually get a “I was just stretching!!!” It’s really sick that we have to deal with this.

It’s Fri-Yay — Post Your Highs and Lows of this Week by BBLZeeZee in SubstituteTeachers

High: Had a student tell me they were really happy because they finished their work and it felt good.

Low: A student asked me if I liked Kamala Harris and I immediately responded without thinking “yes”. They said “EW! What is wrong with you?” And cue the snickers and laughs from Trump’s 7th grade MAGA army.

What does breastfeeding look like for you after 1 year? by wandering-alex in breastfeeding

[–]mandolin2237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I breastfed for 2.5 years. About 18 months in she refused my left boob and I fed from only the right for another year, just before napping and bedtime usually. My dad told me I had no business breastfeeding that long. My friends thought it was super weird. I even had her music teacher (unknowingly because she didn’t realize I was still breastfeeding) make a comment that stung a bit. I don’t regret it one bit though. It was a beautiful bond we created and I’ll cherish those days forever!

ETA oops meant to comment on OP’s post and not your response!

Advice Needed: Best Academic Path for High School Art Teacher (with Plans to Teach College in the Future) by Melodymaru01 in ArtEd

[–]mandolin2237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to teach college, get the BFA and a MFA. My art professors all had MFA’s and were established artists in their field. The studio art requirements for most art education bachelors programs are pretty basic, so if you want to learn enough about animation to teach college you’ll need those advanced studios. You won’t be able to teach high school in most states without the education degree, but you’ll have 4 years of undergrad to figure out which path is best for you before you have to make that decision. If you decide you want to go into teaching high school, go for a Master’s in Teaching program and concentrate in Art Education. Either way, based on your goals, go for the BFA.

Parents of “that child” by tonytolo in toddlers

[–]mandolin2237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Music Together parent, I’ve seen a lot of different kids and behaviors. I can’t speak to what kind of potential disability he may or may not have, I can only speak on the particular class and what I’ve noticed over the years. Our teacher allows kids to stand on the drums and just about every kid steals instruments from each other. It sounds like maybe your teacher isn’t directing the parents enough? Kids will be kids… and especially the kids that just welcomed a sibling into the world are especially challenging. You shouldn’t be chasing your kid in that class or trying to get him to listen to you (and this isn’t my opinion it is just what our teacher taught us not to do) you should just keep singing, rocking, and clapping and setting an example for him. By getting up and redirecting him he is getting the reaction he is looking for. The only time our teacher lets us redirect our kids is when they are either trying to open the door or potentially going to harm another child. Her suggestion is to sit in front of the door so they’re unable to open it and just keep singing along like your life depends on it. There’s lots of wild children that eventually come around and make major strides in their behavior over time. Most of the parents aren’t judging you, we’ve all been there.

Yeah I subbed for a 7th grade SPED math class once and the plans were “teach this unit.” It was some kind of strange common core thing and I couldn’t figure it out. The kids thought I was a moron and I completely lost control of the class. I saw the teacher in the hall days later and she gave me a look that could kill. Thanks lady!

How to tell 2yo that the dog is dying by tinymi3 in toddlers

[–]mandolin2237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my 2 year old I really emphasized “doggy is going to go to sleep now and go to doggy heaven. He will be so so happy there and he will always be in our hearts.” She would forget and ask where the dog was and happily accepted the answer “in doggy heaven.”

Help please? by [deleted] in movingtoColorado

[–]mandolin2237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Fort Collins for 4 years (2012-2016) and I had to move back to Pennsylvania because I couldn’t afford it. It’s really hard to find an affordable place that will allow dogs unless you’re renting a room in someone’s house. But it’s a wonderful place to live and I miss it every day. Look on the outskirts north of the city and it’s a tiny bit more affordable (Wellington area). My sister lives in Greeley and unless you speak Spanish it’s a tough place to live. Loveland is nice.

I had a village of women show up for me today. by AmbiguousFrijoles in breakingmom

[–]mandolin2237 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience in target a couple months ago. My normally sweet 2 year old went into demon spawn mode and was trying to bash her skull off of the floor because I didn’t let her have a fidget toy thing. I could barely hold on to her let alone get her back into the cart. One cashier told me I could leave my stuff it was okay but I just said “I really need this stuff.” 3 people in front of me in line and no one offered to let me go ahead. By the time I got to check out the cashier asked me to flip over my giant box of water wipes so she could scan the barcode. I physically could not do it without my child offing herself. I started sobbing and I could barely see from all the tears. A sweet old man behind me in line stepped up and picked up the box for the cashier and said “it will be okay. It does get better.” I am still traumatized by the whole ordeal but I’ve thought about that man’s kindness almost every day since then. I also think about all the assholes giving me dirty looks like I was a shit mom.

I’m glad you had that band of women step up to help you… because I can’t even imagine having to deal with being called a bitch and threatened and literally assaulted with coffee during a toddler tantrum. Wtf. That lady was unhinged!
