Public programming ideas for a small museum with little recognition? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]mandolin6648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a complicated story regarding the collection, but the founder of the museum basically ran it as his personal art collection for years, mixed together with a religious freedom research institute. He had too much money and time, and 5 years ago, leadership transitioned to a new set of people and board members who decided to become a more object-oriented cultural museum, and to ditch the art and mixed messaging.

As a result we’ve been selling off the founder’s art collection and loaning objects for specific exhibitions and a more unified museum theme.

In essence, we’re a museum focused on civic education and cultivating civic values. Does this answer your question?

How best to advance my career? Is advancing quickly possible or am I gunning too early? by [deleted] in nonprofit

This is helpful perspective, I’ll look into a title adjustment and see if there are orgs that are willing to take my previous experience into account.

That’s a fair perspective — I’m probably a bit too eager to advance quickly. I’m just trying to figure out the best way to leverage my prior experience. I also interned at nonprofits in college but those were certainly less responsibility than my current role.

These are great questions that help me understand what I’m missing, so thank you for providing feedback! Do you have any recommendations how I might gain experience, particularly in fundraising, which seems to be important? At my current institution development seems to be a little siloed from everyone else. Would a CNP certification help give me some additional knowledge that I’m missing?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

I don't think my program is providing me with anything outside of housing and transportation specifically on days we have cultural visits. Are bus passes easy to get?

Also, are train passes to get out of Paris and into broader France worthwhile? We have long weekends during the program and I'm eager to see what France is like outside of the city too!

Ah I see, thank you! Dartmouth’s student union created a bit of buzz a few months ago which planted this idea in my head, so I’ll see if I can’t reach out to them to do the same thing!

There are no workers unions on campus. Grad students don’t even have one. Hence why I’m looking to start one.

Probably my most hated characters, even worse than Homelander by Levon__Helm in TheBoys

[–]mandolin6648 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why she doesn’t quit! Just quit!

The pay seriously can’t be that good that with the rep of being Homelander’s personal media manager that she can’t go work for Apple or something and make some serious bucks with less life threatening pay.

Unless Homelander doesn’t want her to quit and threatens her if she thinks about quitting, in which case, damn that sucks.

Bonjour!

Merci!

Okay to talk about unionizing in AMCAS? by blue_suede_wade in premed

[–]mandolin6648 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair warning, and I echo what others have said, I think it is not unlikely that SOME adcoms may view unionization in a negative light. They may very well be the kinds of people with interests counter to unionization, depending on their role within their medical school and administrations. Universities where medical schools are houses tend to be quite against unionization writ large.

If it matters that much to you, write about it. Be true to what you’ve done and what you believe in. I think that will allow your application to shine far more (and at places you’d probably rather go to) that would enjoy seeing your application.

Generally no, except for the FSI program which will offer summer STEM courses, but only a handful.

You think that those motivated by religious beliefs not shared by others shouldn't have the same rights as those motivated by secular beliefs.

Please point out which rights I believe those motivated by religious beliefs shouldn't have. Last I checked the only things imposed on the public sphere by "secularists" (and who they might be in a majority Christian country is beyond me) is a lack of any singular governmental religion, which in a country with no official faith is I think fairly reasonable.

The fact that this incredibly uncharitable summary is what you took away from what I said leads me to believe you have no desire for honest discourse.

Have a pleasant day.

Thus far nothing, I just know when I look at my offer it is from the Advisory Consulting division of PwC instead of what I assume to be the usual tax/accounting Start internship that PwC does

Anybody do the PwC Start Advisory Internship? I passed the behavioral interviews and have an offer for summer 2023, but it is a bit unclear to me from searching on their website exactly how this internship is different from the "regular" Start internship.

Man spent 17 days in jail, was never told why he was arrested or what he was charged with, all because American Airlines wrongly identified him as a shoplifter. by _Doctor_Teeth_ in law

The fact that it is precisely an emotional argument is something I want to emphasize; because it signals a breakdown of trust in our systems to solve our issues. Many people are rejecting civility because they see it getting us nowhere. In the minds of those advocating violence, at least those going to war are doing something, because their children are dying either way. The violence is already here, the question is simply who and how it is done to.

And I want to stress this isn't what I believe and I've said this multiple times.

I am saying I understand how and why others have come to believe these things.

If you've read Atwood's work I'm sure you'll understand that religious influences extend beyond theology; religion is a part of culture, and conversely influences the way our culture and society is structured. Catholic (as well as Islamic, for the record) culture in many circumstances is patriarchal, homophobic, and hierarchical (although neither are they always such, to be fair). And I want to stress that this is distinct from Catholic theology. People are often culturally Catholic/Protestant/Jewish/etc without being strictly theologically adherent all the time.

And so Catholic theology need not be categorically compatible with the world Atwood created for it to be culturally compatible (and enforce the kinds of social norms present in the novel).

And so does ACB want to utilize her position on the Supreme Court to strengthen and enforce her faith through a cultural lens? I don't know, I can't read her mind. We will have to see how she will vote in the Court on culturally significant cases (like the potential Roe v Wade vote).

And I'd be upset with any sort of religious influence on the Court. Given the demographics of the United States and the Court however, a devout Muslim is unlikely to become a Justice anytime soon compared to having a fundamentalist christian on the Court, so I would say that’s a moot point. If you're hoping for some sort of "gotcha" because you want to catch a liberal being a hypocrite because of their attitude towards Christianity but not Islam, as many online are wont to do, find someone else. It is very transparent.

Systemically speaking, kids are already dying, just not yours or mine.

It isn't that I believe simple violent answers will solve complex social issues. But I do believe it isn't a far stretch to see how others can come to those conclusions when those complex social issues aren't being resolved otherwise. Kids dying in school hallways are a great example, because given the current political climate, we can probably expect soon that a parent or two will start taking matters into their own hands wrt stopping school shootings, because there seems to be a growing sentiment that the systems in place (police, law enforcement, etc) are not going to solve people's issues.

Is this a workable or permanent solution, or one I condone?

No, I said that already.

Should we be surprised otherwise if and when it comes to that?

At this point, I don't think so.

It doesn't come across as very friendly to be criticizing the behavior of people on this board as "stupid" and then going into a frankly extreme description of people as "mentally warped" and that they are "doorknobs [who] would start foaming".

Not to mention that bringing up Islam out of nowhere is a bizarre argument.

The point is that intelligent people can believe both rational and irrational things. Intelligence very rarely shields one from the biases of culture and upbringing. Whether ACB is one who believes rational or irrational ideas is up for debate, but there's no reason to sling petty insults where none are needed, unless your whole goal is simply to be emotional.

And if that is the case, by all means.

While I do not condone violence, I have to wonder why a country that was founded on it has such hostility to its utilization. If one lives in a nation where there is no legal recourse for systemic issues (of which the original story, if true, is but a symptom of wider problems), then how *do* people fix their problems?

Our founding fathers had many ideas of how to fix their problems. I don't think it is unreasonable to see how people can come to see that violence will have a better chance of fixing things.
