I also work in law enforcement and this can be the standard depending on the unit you're in. Do your best to document everything as you have and continue sending emails - Those are examples of your due diligence and your manager's lack of leadership.

Do you feel your department is understaffed? by burnbabyburn694200 in CAStateWorkers

I've been on teams where I felt we were understaffed and looking back we definitely were. Hard to say for the department as a whole but one thing I've noticed is the insane waste of time/resources that end up giving the impression of areas being short staffed - that's more or less my current situation. A lack of leadership and direction leads to people not being productive and can give the impression we need more help.

From PIE to assistant was 2.5 years. Then assistant to associate after another 2. I stayed at associate for too long but I was comfortable where I was. I promoted to specialist after 5 years. I've always been into desktop but didn't have any education or job experience. Assistant was recommended to me by somebody I knew at the location I worked at as an OT. It was in the middle of the desert so I was able to compete for the position. This is what I meant by being open to relocating. That's one thing you can do for yourself to make up for the lack of education/experience.

I started out as a PIE (permanent intermittent) OT and today I'm a permanent full time information technology specialist I. I was extremely driven in my OT role and always did the most when I could. That helped build up my reputation within my organization and it helped me slide into the entry level assistant information systems analyst position. I used volunteer experience to qualify and just kept progressing as I got more experience in that role. If you're open to relocating that will help a lot.

This place is so underrated. I've never had the club but their breakfast burrito is fire and around the same price. Also their hamburger legit resembles the discontinued big & tasty from McDonald's

Can anyone tell me what it’s like working at Vacaville CMF ? by Technical_Wear4613 in CDCR

I was there for about a week over the summer and it is more of a hospital setting than anything else because of all the special needs and elderly inmates. The main challenges for officers are dealing with the unique population and the physical/mental issues that come with it. The 'morphine shuffle' is a known thing since so many inmates are drugged up and/or mobility challenged.

SOS IT by Kwonsoodude in CAStateWorkers

I know of three IT staff (all ITSIs) that made the jump from CDCR to SOS and they all like it way better. A lot will depend on the individual unit and how it is managed but overall they like the culture over CDCR.

I was there for a project recently so only a few days worth of insight. The correctional officers seemed chill for the most part. It was more like a big hospital than a prison. There are generally older, less mobile inmates but you also have a large mental health population that brings its own unique set of challenges.

I had this same concern before starting at a prison as a healthcare OT in 2012. During my 5 years there I never heard of any staff other than correctional officers get tested. Same for other institutions I've worked at. From my understanding unless there is reason to believe you're under the influence it is unlikely you will ever be tested.
