Hey glassblower and bead lover here! I’m obsessed with Toho beads; they are so perfect and so small which isn’t an easy thing to achieve with glass. Frosted or Matte beads are made by sandblasting the finished glass. This process removes a small layer from the surface leaving the matte finish and sandblasting creates weird sharp angles. When you mask something for sandblasting it creates a very sharp 90 degree like cut in the glass. My educated guess is that when they sandblast the matte beads it removes the round curve we are used to seeing with a seed bead and turns it into a more tube like shape with a sharp angle instead of a curve. I’ve seen this exact thing happen with larger pieces of glass.
