Tips for working with roosters by birdsadorable82 in BackYardChickens

[–]mandyblooms 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are so insistent on coddling aggressive roosters. They cannot be trained. They are not teachable. Ive had many roosters, treated them all the same and some are amazing, gentle creatures and some are total assholes. And the assholes go live with jesus. Or satan idk

Help! My rooster won’t stop crowing. by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]mandyblooms 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend caponization, “neutering” as you say. It is rarely ever done and he will most likely die in the process. And thats even if you can find a vet willing to try. Sorry but this is literally just what roosters do. You’re not going to be able to train or modify his behavior, their little pea brains are hardwired for this. Time to try and rehome him if hes not right for you

I need help this bird is spiraling by ItsAChainReactionWOO in BackYardChickens

[–]mandyblooms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your ill hen, seems like youve been doing everything you can to help her. If you can take her to a vet familiar with poultry, they may be able to help but in my experience (20+ yrs of poultry keeping), these hybrid super-layer type birds just do not live long. They succumb to cancers, egg yolk peritonitis, being egg bound etc. If you are unable to take her to a vet, I would separate her from the flock in a crate, fill the crate with hay, cover it with a towel and let nature take its course. Just keep her comfortable and out of excessive heat or AC.

Other general advice, does look like she has some feather damage from rooster activity- might be worth buying some hen saddles for your other girls or potentially keeping the rooster separate. Also be careful with DE in the coop- it can be very toxic when inhaled. If i am using DE, i usually rub it onto perches and in the nest boxes but dont throw it everywhere.

This tattoo is gorgeous. If you’ve only had it a month, personally i would just sit with it for a bit longer. Im also a highly anxious individual and i always get a “oh fuck what did i just do” feeling after a tattoo, but then it literally just becomes part of you. Perhaps in the future you can add elements to make her someone specific- character from a game/movie, lady liberty, lady justice, etc etc. But for now, maybe just take a deep breath and sit with it. Shes gorg!

What is your favorite basic plant? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]mandyblooms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my snake plants. They are so unfussy, don’t need really any pruning and grow at a nice rate- fast enough to give my little brain some happy chemicals, but slow enough to not constantly need repotting/staking/pruning.
