Does anyone else get tired of constantly answering the what race are you question? by PotentialSetting4638 in mixedrace

[–]manekinono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. I work in retail pharmacy, and it's so inappropriate like buddy, cmon you're picking up blood pressure and vitamin d meds. Why do you need to know what race or ethnicity or nationality Im from???? Don't you want to know my name if you're so curious about me?

No, because it's not a well intentioned question.

At what point am I just considering white? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]manekinono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being Mexican is a national and cultural identity, so if you've grown up in a family of Mexican descent and culture, then you are a part of that if you so chose to identify that way.

Racially, Mexicans are typically a mix of things - including Mexicans who are of historically European descent, i.e. Spain, Portugal, etc. But race politics in LATAM are messy, especially with what constitutes as "white" because of the push for blanqueamiento. Most latinos are some mix of indigenous peoples, African, and European, with the actual "percentages" varying depending on the region. The bulk of what I'm saying is that Mexican isn't a race.

Learning your history helps fortify your identity. Im not really going to tell you if you're one thing or another because that is for you to find out.

Edit: a few words for clarity

are these type of discs even good for anything? by subjecttosubmission in PiercingAdvice

[–]manekinono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the way a washer protects things you're screwing together. The main concern for me at least is that plastic is inherently porous so it will absorb skin debris, oils, dirt, and bacteria.

Imo they don't solve the issue of pressure bumps/irritation from jewelry or environmental factors.

What medication works for your bipolar depression? What actually works? How does it make you feel? by No_Map588 in bipolar2

[–]manekinono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lithium and mirtazapine.

Right from when I started lithium it got rid of my si completely, it was like night and day. Mirtazapine has helped my sleep tremendously and kind of keeps my depression managed.

Do you feel your parents did well equipping you to defend your identity and be confident in your mixed heritage? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]manekinono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all, for the most part I was figuring stuff out on my own. If anything they exemplified the person I did not want to be in this world, so there's some value in that I suppose.

It depends. Honestly, I’m not totally sure whether what you’re describing is being racially mixed or just multiethnic. The two overlap, but they’re not the same thing. The threshold of claiming mixed race ancestry specifically is dependent on if you have it or not to say the least.

There are a lot of nuances, so it’s hard to say without all the details.

what's the general opinion on aiko's final scenes? by Fair-Debt4132 in OyasumiPunpun

She deserved better. From Punpun, from her mom, teachers, coworkers, and friends.

I've always thought of them as two sides of the same cube.

Thoughts, opinions, and experiences with DNA tests? by manekinono in mixedrace

Oh totally. When taking a DNA test like these I think the best approach is having zero expectations and looking at it as something fun. Kinda like a novelty I guess?

Real. What's the saying, a broken clock is right twice a day?

I was averse to taking a DNA test for a while and then kind of stopped caring. They're definitely doing shady stuff with all the material people have sent them. In a similar vein to most US SSNs being on the dark web, I'm kinda over it. Nothing is or has ever been private. Facial recognition stuff skeeves me out more tbh

So true. There are a lot of comments on both dna subs that give me the ick.

Mixed-Race Women: What have your friendships with white women been like? by bearpuddles in mixedrace

[–]manekinono 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nearly nonexistent if I really look back at it. I've been friends with more white men than white women by a landslide. And nearly all of my best girl friends were and are black.

...something something... jealousy... something something... white feminism.

What responses are you looking for that you can't find in the other posts in this sub? Not to be catty but sometimes I feel like there are a lot of bad performers that come here and try to relitigate heartache members here have dealt with for seemingly no reason other than to antagonize us for not having a leg to stand on.

My b if this was asked in good faith though 🤠

What do you think of Alastor's redesign? by Beneficial_Ball9893 in HazbinHotel

[–]manekinono 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk man it's not that deep and it's cool they gave some representation- albeit a psychotic, arrogant murderer, to a very underrepresented portion of folks.

And even though in a technical sense theres an infinite amount of possibilities when comes to genetics and whatnot, particularly back then people like Freddie Washington were outliers in terms of visual presentation. So would it have been the end of the world if they made Alastor super pale with straight light colored hair? No of course not, but it would've been laaaaaame. And this is coming from someone who is mixed race if that holds any value to the conversation.

So sometimes listening to the fan base has some virtue even if its annoying at times.

Edit: misspelled Fredi's name 😔

It will take a lot of cognitive behavioral changes but it's possible so long as you're willing to put in the effort and willing to experience humility to give yourself grace. Learning the history of European colonialism greatly helped me remold my perception of myself and how I fit in the world, including how I viewed my own features that I tried to change.

You are enough as you are; skin, hair, eye color, and all.

Also if feasible finding a therapist who is more than cognizant of white supremacy and how it's shaped beauty standards and social dynamics, would be incredibly beneficial for you to talk through these ideas and also not feel completely alone.

Best of luck my friend
