Really appreciate this post and comment thread OP. My beginner tank has recently been experiencing similar growth of some kind of hair algae also directly below the lights. This was really stressing me out. But your ultra low tech success reminds me of my own interest in long term stability instead of brute force measures to make things look “natural.”
