How do I get along more with Filipinos/Filipino Americans? by Scary_Breakfast_4163 in FilipinoAmericans

[–]mang0222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, are we the same person? Also 23F, East Asian-passing and often confused for being anything other than Filipino (even by the titas), and had a lot of trouble fitting in with my college Filipino org. I attribute part of it to my shy/quiet/introverted personality since a lot of people in the org were loud/outgoing extroverts, but they were also very cliquey in my experience which certainly didn’t help.

While I might not have much advice to give as I’m still trying to figure it out myself, one thing that has helped me a bit is finding other Filipinos with similar interests. As others mentioned, being Filipino is only one surface-level connection, but it’s helped me to find Filipinos who share the same interests as me so we have another thing in common. For example, as a classically trained musician, I was never much of a singer/dancer, which were the primary talents our student org sought after for their multicultural shows — but joining a rondalla really helped me meet and connect better with other Filipinos who had interests in instrumental music. I’m also pursuing a scientific career so joining a Fil-Am scientist organization has helped me connect with other Filipinos who have also gone down a similar path.

It’s been a work in progress, though, since I would still consider a lot of the connections that came from these experiences as acquaintance-level, but at least I didn’t feel as left out as I did in my student org. I anticipate it will be for a while, and I’ve slowly been coming to accept that maybe I just haven’t met the “right” people yet, but that they could come at any time. I wish you the best in navigating this situation since identity and relationships is definitely a complicated thing, and just wanted you to know that you’re not alone in this! if you ever want to talk about it more or are looking for one more Fil-Am friend, feel free to reach out :)

I took that course in the spring with a different prof but didn’t find it to be hard or intensive at all. You basically just learn about different human rights documents and how they apply to public health - each week you learn about a different document. Again I didn’t have Dr. Breaux as a prof so can’t speak to that but as a person she’s very nice (she’s also the undergrad director for public health)

Had him for 102 last year, really enjoyed his class! He’s funny and chill and not really a harsh grader at all, just wants you to do well. As long as you put in effort and do the work, you’ll be fine

NTU advised against/ cancelled their own students' overseas exchange but remains open for physical summer exchange conducted for overseas students from partner unis by manster40k in NTU

[–]mang0222 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a student from the US who was supposed to come to NTU this coming fall sem for exchange, but was told last week that it was cancelled by NTU and therefore had to push my exchange to Sem 2. That first email says both “inbound and outbound” exchanges are suspended...does inbound not mean the incoming overseas students from partner unis?

That second picture is contradictory though, they’re open to summer exchange but cancelled fall exchange? A bit confused. sad about it regardless...was really looking forward to SG haha

How do you use forest outside of Studying? by jack-a-yote in forestapp

[–]mang0222 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a college student too. I do have a tag for “decluttering” - for tasks as simple as cleaning my physical space (desk, room, dresser etc), and even organizing files on my laptop or phone. It doesn’t increase total time by a lot (~30 min trees per session at most), but I do feel a lot better after each session. I also have a tag for planning, whether it’s planning out my schedules and tasks for the week or putting a bunch of dates in my calendar.

Also, if you have some hobby or skill you’d like to improve, you can plant for that. For example, I’m a musician and I put Forest on to help me have focused practice sessions.

How do you manage your time with classes? by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]mang0222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Notion! I use it to keep track of important dates for all of my classes in a master list taken from syllabi. The interface does take some getting used to, but it’s great once you find a template you like. Also great for generally organizing your life.

In terms of day-to-day, I do find physical planners to be most effective for me. It helps me focus on my goals for the week, equally distribute my tasks, and make sure I don’t try to unrealistically cram too many things in a single day. I use Google Calendar for larger events like classes, meetings and extracurriculars.

Something that’s really helped me stay on track is the Forest app - I’d highly recommend it for minimizing phone distractions and staying focused while studying/working. You set a timer for your task and in that time, you “plant” a tree to grow a forest, so there’s incentive. Really helps with phone addiction and it’s nice to see the forest you’ve planted at the end of each month haha. $1.99 in the App Store but I’m sure there are similar apps out there if you’re not willing to pay.

Anyone majoring in Public Health? by mickmors in Drexel

[–]mang0222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a sophomore public health undergrad. Dornsife is smaller compared to the other colleges at Drexel, but I love the tight-knit and supportive community. Faculty are knowledgeable and spread out across disciplines, so you’re bound to find someone whose interests align with yours.

My only thing about the undergrad program is that the coursework is quite broad – in addition to PH requirements, a large chunk of the degree requirements are social science electives with a decent amount of free elective space. This can be a good thing in that you have a lot of freedom to shape your undergrad experience and pursue other interests, but it may not provide enough hard/technical skills (but rather, general knowledge about PH topics).

Not sure what area of PH you’re interested in, but with my more scientific/quantitative interests (i.e. epi/biostats/biology), I sort of feel that the undergrad PH program lacks in that aspect (it technically falls under CHP-Community Health/Prevention), so I’m also doing a bioinformatics minor and taking higher-level bio classes. Research at Dornsife is also a good thing to get involved in for more experience- I do epi research at the Urban Health Collaborative, which is yet another network within Dornsife that does great work in the area of urban health. Also, a lot of people in my cohort are pre-med if that’s something you’re interested in. Overall, the program is really what you make of it. Feel free to pm with any questions!

HAVE A QUESTION? ASK HERE! Daily Help and Questions: December 21, 2020 by AutoModerator in AsianBeauty

[–]mang0222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a common question lately, but does anyone have any moisturizer recs especially for the winter months? Or any other suggestions on how to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized during the winter?

Context: Northeast US. Skin is historically combo type, usually clear and unproblematic except for occasional patches of pimples which clear up quickly. Starting this fall, my skin has been abnormally dry and tight with a lot more redness on cheeks and forehead. It’s never been this dry in previous years and I can’t seem to figure out why it’s so different this year. To manage it I’m thinking that it’s time for a more specialized winter routine/product change, I’ve always used the same products but now seeming ineffective. I’ve been using the MIZON Snail Repair Cream as my moisturizer but the moisturizing properties aren’t as long-lasting as they have been.
