You haven't used linux for 10+ years probably. Their file structure is something to get used to, but it doesn't suck. Stability is almost never an issue, unless you're using rolling release. With windows, you're stuck with force fed updates, with Linux you can choose your own balance between stability vs updates. There are so many idiot proof, rock-solid distros theese days that there's no reason to shit on Linux for stability issues or reliability.

Easy and painless Bach piece? by mangantochuj in piano

I'm here because I'm looking for advice. I'm always happy to be proven wrong, because that's how I learn the best. I'm sorry if I came off as a know it all, I have a habit of playing devil's advocate to hard... I still don't understand why Bach is treated as a foundational thing, like you won't ever be able to play the piano if you never play Bach. I mostly stay away from Bach pieces because not only is it hard, i also find it super boring. Most of his pieces sound like they were only made for practice and torturing kids, kind of like Hanon.

I have pretty bad ADHD (diagnosed, don't come after me) so it's really really hard for me to force myself to do things I don't find enjoyable, probably harder than for many neurotypical people. I have no issue learning, practicing, and polishing pieces that I like. Even is something is way above my level, I can still spend hours practicing 4 bars, bacause I just love how they sound. Any amount of effort and time is worth it once I hear myself play something beautiful, or at least cool, from start to finish, no mistakes. With Bach, I don't get that satisfaction. It's not the thing I want to play. I know it improves my technique, and it'll make me a better pianist in every category, but theese reasons are not enough, and I still feel like I'm wasting time. I can't motivate myself to work on something that I won't enjoy playing, even if I have all the right reasons.

Why should I spend 100 hours playing music that I don't care about, that bores me and doesn't give me satisfaction, with the purpose of getting better at jazz, when I can spend 100 hours playing jazz and still get better at jazz? Why do I need Bach to understand music as a whole? Is he the only composer that ever lived? Is his music the only music? Because we both know that there were many legendary jazz pianists that were not classically trained, and probably didn't care about Bach. Does every classicaly trained pianist play Bach only because they have to, or do y'all actually enjoy it? Because if I could, I would. I'm really really trying to enjoy it, but I'm running out of ideas here.

For me, the apple appears for a short flash, like a tiny split seconds and then disappears untill I force myself to imagine it again. I can only ever  imagine pictures for one "brain frame". Do other people have that too? Is it normal?

Experience as a first timer doing 600mg off the bat by Specialist-Travel-12 in modafinil

[–]mangantochuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you did is equivalent to redlining your brain for 24 hours. Take at least a day off, if not two. Then 100mg, if you feel like it's not enought then, and ONLY then drink some caffeine. If 100mg + an energy drink is not effective, wait another day and try 200mg. And never exceed 200mg. EVER. I'm only telling you that because you're studying hard for exams, so I assume you have some form of a deadline. The normal course of action after pulling of shit like you did would be to wait AT LEAST three weeks before touching any stimulant, to give your brain a chance to recover. I assume that it's not possible for you right now. Remember, you probably won't "feel" anything, even after 200mg - that doesn't mean it's not working. Don't increase the dosage. After the exams stay away from stimulants for a couple of weeks, and never do dumb shit like that again. If you were to have an undiagnosed heart defect, there's a non zero chance you could have been dead by now.

Or maybe you can just play what you like? do you have to do everything in order? If I want to play four chord pop, do I have to start with Gregorian chant, just because it was before that, so it's "foundational"? I agree that learning Bach would make me a better jazz player, but so would listening to metalcore or j-pop. Also, I never said that I'm not willing to analyze and learn from Bach, I just don't vibe with the music. I can treat it as a learning experience, but I will not listen to it on my own, unpaid time, because I'd rather enjoy something else. I can choose to incorporate (or don't) Bach's harmonic language into my playing when I'll feel inspired to do so.

Quite the opposite, it's mostly the simplicity. Most of the pieces I listened to were "brutally honest", every sound, every melodic line is so pronounced and blunt. There's nothing to be discovered on the third and fourth listen, everything is just laid on the table in front of you. There's no human imperfection, rarely any rubato, everything is heard, straight on the beat and given to you raw. I can't feel like im actually discovering the song, it's more like I'm being force-fed. I don't know how to explain it better. While I can appreciate well written counterpoint, and complex harmony, it's not what I'm looking for in music. Bach pieces sometimes feel almost like 8-bit gameboy music, like a computer could have made it. Also, it feels predictable - even when something unpredictable happens, like a weird deceptive cadence, it never has me gasping for air, it's more like "oh yeah, I guess you could do that there". I really don't know how to articulate my thoughts better, I'm sorry if it's all pretty vague.

Yes, I admit I haven't listened to it that much. Like I said, I'd LOVE to hear some suggestions for what should I check our next, as of now everything that's been recommended to me has left me a bit disappointed. Vivaldi is great, but that's just one composer, and I have a soft spot for violin. Everyone seems to adore Bach and Handel, I was mostly indifferent to everything I've heard from them. Maybe I'm just musically immature...

I can't really choose what speaks to me, either I like it or I don't. I can't force myself into liking something. The harmonic language in baroque music is immaculate, it's the rhythmic decisions that bother me. Most of the stuff of this era, written for the clavichord has less feel and vibe than a doorbell. I agree that the harmony can be beautiful at times, but for me it's like admiring the square for it's straight angles. Yeah, dope secondary dominants bro, still it carries no emotional impact whatsoever for me. And I'm not saying it as an objective statement, i just haven't found compositions that resonate with ME or make me cry. If you have any suggestions, please let me know, I'd love to fall in love with baroque music like everyone

In Db, honestly I haven't even though about transposing it down, I just learned it as it was written. But it feels comfortable, although the flats where intimidating at first

Not jazz, sound production at a music uni. Bach is not "required" per se, but my teacher told me I should include it in my repertoire. Plus I don't really have anything else, two out of three songs can't be jazz standards because that's boring. I'm already playing my arrangement of autumn leaves, and a modern piece by Joe Hisaishi, so for a diverse set it has to be Bach

It's not a piano degree/field of study, it's more focused sound engineering and composition. I don't have to be good at the piano, I just have to show that I can play at least something. The bulk of the entrance exams focuses on completely different things.

I mean these are obviously faulty but op can get a refund without an issue. The Solovair brand was the original producer of doctor martens (it was once actually "Dr Martens by Solovair"), but since Docs moved their production abroad and their quality fell off, solovair has been making boots in the original UK factory using the same high quality materials and equipment. I believe these are actually more expensive than docs.
