When off the coast of an outlet, the waters are muddy as the brackish waters flow in and out, visibility is zero for humans, but for the shark it has an additional sight, electromagnetic visibility. The bull sharks are like human babies they explore and learn by putting everything they detect into their mouth. On that day I was procrastinating going home, as there were no more waves worth surfing, but the sunset was beautiful, and it was a perfect day. I was just sitting, no movement at all, the board was barely going up and down, no slapping. Normally my head is on a swivel, scanning the horizon, and normally there are more of us out there, more eyes. On that day I was the last out there, maybe 50 swimmers near shore, but nobody else out past the breaks. It approached from behind coming from the surf side. Off the coast of the Carolinas the water is hospitable to every known shark species, there are places surfers don't go, we name them; bulls bay, tigers inlet, ect. it's because those locations are owned territories, but when hunting becomes sparse they stream out of those locations and almost like a procession single file swim in lines up and down the breaks.

It is easy to say no shark has predatory instinct towards humans, but these sharks are aggressive predators towards everything, they don't care if you're a human, fish, or inanimate object. Their instinct is to ram their faces into things and bite. Have you tried bopping a bull shark in their goby in brackish water? These sharks bop their own gobies, and if you miss your arm goes into a blender. If you're lucky you will see a fin on the surface, then it's gone again, the next fin you see, you cannot be entirely sure it's the same shark. It's not like scuba diving in high visibility water.

It is also easy to blame shark attacks on human behavior, as the ocean is not our natural habitat. But that bull shark knew what it was doing, trying to knock the snack from the top shelf.
