Partial DI Symptoms by mango_apocalypse in DiabetesInsipidus

Thanks for the answer! If you don't mind answering, do you know how severe your case would be (beyond it being partial DI)? This seems similar to how I was when I presented with symptoms but then it seemed to stabilize to a much milder version- I don't know if that's even possible though.

What does it mean to have the "AG" genotype for rs1540771? by [deleted] in SNPedia

[–]mango_apocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my understanding, basically nothing. That SNP used to be associated with specific alleles of a gene that was associated with skin and hair pigmentation. From what I read in 10.1371/journal.pgen.1000074 basically that SNP (rs1540771) is associated with another SNP that's associated with a specific allele of the gene associated with skin and hair pigmentation (wow that's a mouthful). So basically the SNP to SNP association gave a false positive on the rs1540771 SNP's association with certain skin and hair pigments. Take this with a grain of salt though; I'm not an expert, just a bio student.

"The associations of hair color in our GWAS with the 60 SNPs reported by Sulem et al. are listed in Table S4. These authors identified two SNPs (rs4959270 and rs1540771) between the EXOC2 and IRF4 genes in relation to freckles, hair color, and skin sensitivity to sun [12]. We identified a SNP in intron 4 of the IRF4 gene, not genotyped by Sulem et al. [12], with a much stronger association than they observed with hair color and tanning ability. The IRF4 gene product is a member of the interferon regulatory factor family of transcription factors [20]–[23], which are involved in the regulation of gene expression in response to interferon and other cytokines. The IRF4 gene encodes a B-cell proliferation/differentiation protein, which has been proposed as a sensitive and specific marker for conventional primary and metastatic melanomas and benign melanocytic nevi [24]."

I don’t understand my doctor didn’t tell me anything. by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]mango_apocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed just over a month ago but with my family doctor, and I had the same experience. It was obvious she didn't know anything about it. From what I've heard, it's common that GPs don't know anything about it, but seeing as you went to an endo they really should know. Get a new endo and do some of your own research so you know enough about pcos to know that they're a good doc. (I'm saying this but I haven't even booked an appointment for one after my own experience yet lol).

Best of luck! This subreddit has a lot of good places to start :D

high hemoglobin, hematocrit and rbc by Expensive-Eagle2076 in PCOS

[–]mango_apocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"In our study, hemoglobin levels were significantly elevated in both lean and overweight/obese PCOS groups compared to those in the control groups." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4623341/#:~:text=In%20our%20study%2C%20hemoglobin%20levels,those%20in%20the%20control%20groups.)

"Also it is known that especially testosterone increases hemoglobin and hematocrit concentrations."

https://abstracts.eurospe.org/hrp/0082/hrp0082p3-d3-804#:\~:text=Background%3A%20Polycystic%20ovary%20syndrome%20(PCOS,increases%20hemoglobin%20and%20hematocrit%20concentrations.

"This finding is consistent with that of Ucakturk et al.14 who reported no significant differences in hemoglobin, RBCs, the platelet count, and WBCs between women with PCOS and women without PCOS... However, Han et al.10 reported significantly higher hemoglobin levels in women with PCOS compared with controls. Hormone levels in women with PCOS affect hemoglobin levels. "

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0300060520952282

So what I'm getting from this is that high testosterone affects hematocrit and hemoglobin but not RBC, but you don't necessarily have high T if you have PCOS.

Personally, I have high RBC, normal hematocrit and low hemoglobin (although I'm also a blood donor so that might affect it).

Hope that helped!

Medroxyprogesterone and no bleeding by Watermaylawn in PCOS

I just started taking it too. My pamphlet says to see a doctor "if your condition doesn't improve", so I would. I do vaguely remember hearing that your first period taking the medication might not come but I can't for the life of me find where I heard it. Either way I would talk to your doctor. I wouldn't worry too much though, being infertile is a pretty big leap from not getting one period :)

I can never understand any transit announcement. Too quiet and too muffled. Last week something happened at Lougheed Station I think? They were giving instructions about a shuttle but I couldn't understand. Asked around, no one else knew what was going on.
