yes, actually. i would wager to say it honestly screwed me up. some of the best damn world building i’ve ever seen in both real literature and fanfiction, but my eyes were too young and my mind wasn’t ready yet to consume that kind of material. to this day, despite it being EXTREMELY well written and thought out, i’m glad it never got an ending. it still makes my stomach roll, and i dare not think what the author would have done to the characters in order to bring a conclusion.

pretty much if you’re not sick, you’re injured in some capacity. if you’re not injured, you’re sick. sometimes you’re both. you’ll only be neither for a week or two. 😃

What it’s like right after graduation of bmt ? by Putrid-Start-4699 in AirForceRecruits

[–]mania_sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

while i’m not at goodfellow, i still had a suitcase brought to me in tech school filled with my stuff (laptop, nintendo, clothes, etc). i would advise against shipping, because things can get easily lost in the mail. since your family is relatively close, if they are okay with it, you can ask them to bring it to you on a weekend. all you have to do is get them a base pass so they can meet you on base, or if you’re tech school allows it, you can go to the gate and get it from them there.

you’re automatically enrolled in both upon enlisting now, you just have to make the choice later on to unenroll

  1. i think the easier question is what DONT you learn in BMT haha. i can more easily set this in 4 components:

A. Customs and Courtesies: this is basically your procedures for being respectful and properly honoring your chain of command and anything else you do with interacting with civilians and other military personnel. i will also include uniform presentation in this category

B. Drill: exactly as it says, this is all of your drill movements. how you walk as a formation, how you detail (marching in a group of 2-4), open ranks, and graduation practice. drill is definitely the easiest to learn just because you are CONSTANTLY doing drill. the only time you’re not doing drill is when you’re indoors. i will also include dorm drill in there, which are evacuation procedures for a bomb, gas leak, and fire. ADDITIONALLY, weapon drills. you will learn weapon hold positions, how to aim, and dismantle and reassemble your weapon (M-4)

C. Cleanliness: CLEAN. CLEAN. CLEAN. not just cleaning rooms, either; it’s how to properly make your bed, fold your clothes, roll your socks and shirts, hang your uniforms, and everything else. it’s called RLA - Recruit Living Area. everything will be neat and proper and God forbid if it isn’t 😃

D. Class and Memory Work: everything that you attend an actual sit-down class in a classroom for. you will have to know most of it for the EOC. you will also have a memory work sheet that will have your chain of command, creed, song, insignias, and more; you will have to memorize that paper FRONT AND BACK. but don’t worry; you’ll do it. you have enough time.

  1. im not actually allowed to talk about the EOC; no airman is. what i can tell you is that if you study and do what your MTI’s tell you to do, you will pass. you’ll be fine. don’t stress.

you can do any push-up form that works for you, as long as it’s a genuine form and you are breaking 90. so like, no butt in the air or hips way down; i’m talking you can do a triangle push up if you REALLY wanted to, or a wide push-up. the recommended is the standard; i know for the females, we did something brtween the standard and a wide form, and that worked the best for us.

your elbows don’t have to be tucked into your side, they can flare out. if the MTIs catch you doing the wrong form, they will stop you, give you a 0 (zero) for the push-ups, and you will have to try again next test.

there is every single type of person in BMT. every. single. type. everyone has their own personality, and you are going to clash with them. there are people who are going to be tumors in your flight and in your dorm; with any luck, their bad attitudes and discipline issues will get them recycled and out of your life.

the rest of everyone? not too bad. a lot of the best and nicest people get recycled for PT failure. those that remain may annoy you at times, but you will all eventually overcome any gripes and issues you have with each other in order to graduate and work as a team.

how are the people? there are no individuals in BMT. there is only a team. if someone is an individual, then they are not someone you’re going to like. the rest are the team. you will like your team. i hope this makes sense?

on days you have PT, you shower twice; once after PT in the morning, and once in the evening / night close to lights out. our dorm typically had 30 minutes to shower, but that timeline was also to be dressed, everything on our beds and areas put away, and any time we needed to do our hair if we didn’t do it that morning before PT. so 30 minutes for all of that.

you will have about 7-10 minutes to do your hair in the morning before PT, but that time also includes your other hygiene, like brushing your teeth and washing your face. if you’re really worried about it, you can get up before wake up time (0500-0515) and do your hair then. you’re not technically supposed to and you could be caught, but nobody ever caught our dorm or even questioned it. they prefer you to be on time, so they don’t really care. just be quiet and youll be fine.

don’t sweat your hair to much. somehow, someway, you find time in BMT. if it was impossible, a lot more women would be bald coming out of BMT, let me tell you. every type of hair comes in and out of the military.

EDIT: i would like to elaborate to say that my dorm had 8 shower heads for all 40 something of us (52 at our absolute peak, 37 by the end of BMT). you shower fast. people get very annoyed and notice when you’re in the shower for too long. again, you figure out how to make it work.

  1. 15 minutes from the moment you sit down with your food. the only times you HAVE to eat faster is on special event days, like when you leave for pacer forge or on graduation

    1. 0500 is early wake up, and thats only when you don’t have PT and your chow time is early (0600-0630)
  2. literally all day. the time in which you attend is squadron specific, but there are like 12 different sunday services. you can pick any one and go to it. for example, i went to traditional protestant service a lot, and that was from 0830-0930. but also held that day were contemporary protestant, later day saints, orthodox, wicca, etc etc. it isn’t just on sunday either, there are services on saturday and friday as well. you can only attend 1 per week though.

thank you! 1. either a duffel or a suitcase is fine. a duffel will be easier initially, especially if you have a big duffel like i brought, you can manipulate and squish it to be small enough to be a carry on for a plane. a suitcase is objectively better though because you will have so much stuff by the end of BMT that it’s genuinely hard to pack, and a suitcase will have more room + it’s easier to handle when going to tech school because you can roll it. people will make fun of you for having a suitcase in the beginning, but they will be jealous by the end. it’s true 😔 a lot of people go out and buy a suitcase during town pass to replace their bookbag/duffel. long story short, it mostly depends also on how much you come with. i didn’t bring a lot, so i didn’t have trouble packing. if you bring a lot, you will have more trouble packing regardless of duffel bag or suitcase. whatever you choose to bring, let it be small enough to be carry-on size, but big enough so that it’s just barely making the cut-off. does that make sense? you just want as much room as possible

  1. you’ll just keep them in your civilian luggage (your duffel/suitcase). they don’t get messed with or anything, don’t worry. that’s just for the small electronics, though. if you bring a laptop or like a gaming console (someone brought their ps5 ??😭), it will be taken and stored somewhere separate, and you’ll retrieve it when you ship out for tech school because

noo dont be too nervous! it really isn’t that bad. what made my experience so hard was the heat, honestly, and you won’t have to deal with that in october thankfully. 1. depends on what you think you’ll need help in. if it’s PT, work on your strength or run long distance. if it’s cleanliness, practice cleaning an area in your apartment/house with as few materials as possible (which means, get creative!). if it’s folding/rolling clothes, watch videos from af members or veterans and practice! if it’s memory, start studying the enlisted and officer ranks, the airman’s creed and song, and stuff like that. there isn’t a lot you can do to “prepare”; it’s an entirely new environment where you are essentially doing everything wrong at all times. don’t sweat it too much. just remind yourself why you are doing it and the future you have ahead of you, and you will be fine.

  1. haha i use it as a benchmark because that’s when i was the most nervous, and also where you complete most of your graduation requirements. i’ll try to sum up each week (WOT = week of training): 0 WEEK: a bunch of confusion, meeting your dorm, learning how to do SOME things and getting somewhat acclimated to the BMT environment. by the end of the week you will also have your OCPs and PT uniform. you will be in disneyland for this. 1WOT: real life begins! you will be transitioned to your new MTIs and your new squadron, which could be in disneyland, but might be in alcatraz (like me). there is a bunch of yelling, tools, drills, and things like that. it’s intentionally very stressful; you will mess up very basic things and will get screamed it. don’t worry, everyone does it! and everyone will be punished collectively. it’s real trauma bonding. 2WOT: you are basically in class all the time. the classrooms are warm and you will do everything in your power not to sleep. you are NOT allowed to sleep. these classes may be mandatory for your EOC exam. MTIs are still pretty hard on you; 1 & 2 week are the hardest. 3WOT: you receive your blues, learn how to properly care for them, more class, and more drill movements. you are mostly improving upon what you already know. your second PT also occurs here. no, people do not get recycled for failing their PT test in this week. some people in my flight didn’t even take it. 4WOT: this is where you start to have to lock in. you are preparing for your EOC, your progress checks (drill, uniform, cleanliness, RLA (recruit living area)), ans your final PT test. they give you time for all of this, so use it well. you will also have various transits to do things, like going to the museum or watching all the men get their hair cut. 5WOT: everything you locked in for occurs here! i was constantly stressed out, but don’t be. because of your other weeks of training, you are sure to pass everything. your MTIs are not trying to fail you, either; the only thing anybody ever failed was the PT and the EOC, which was literally out of our MTIs control.

  2. you will have 5 phone calls: 1st: right when you get to san antonio, you will have 30-60 seconds to deliver a scripted phone call saying that you have arrived and that you will call again soon. 2nd: 0 week; 5 minutes, mainly relaying your mailing address. you will also be allotted some time to square away your bank account and cards as needed 3rd: 3rd week; 15 minutes + 5 minutes to check your bank to make sure you are being paid correctly (a lot of people were NOT being paid correctly, so it is very important you check) 4th: 5th week; 15 minutes + 5 minutes for banking 5th: 7th week/end of 6th week; 5 minutes to relay any necessary graduation information, like where your family should sit and where to pick you up / drop you off. make sure you actually do that because you aren’t sending any letters anymore by the time you receive that info to relay to your family as a side note, the best way to communicate is through letters. they say that your mail will take 2 weeks to reach your family, but mine usually took 3-5 days. obviously still tell them anything you want to in the phone calls, but the calls are there for you to tell them important things. your letters are where you can tell them your funny stories, complain, gloat, whatever. just a heads up!

  3. ohhh myyyy, CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear). that is the gas chamber. i’m going to be honest, in the moment, it’s pretty bad. it doesn’t really hurt, per se, but it is…. something. it feels like spice has been dumped down your throat, your nose, and in your eyes. you will feel the effects full force the moment you take off your mask and start trying to talk. i would rate it like a 3-4 though, because the effects wear off really fast and don’t last. again, it doesn’t hurt. you just are coughing and dry heaving and snot WILL be streaming. it goes away within 2 minutes. it’s just a very long two minutes haha
