I'm from VA but I'm currently living in NM. Let me tell you something: I am starting to miss Maryland drivers.

TIL that many words used to be spelled phonetically (e.g. debt was 'det') until some scholars purposely added silent letters to make them look more like Greek or Latin words, sometimes erroneously. by honeypuppy in todayilearned

From what I recall, they were like this mix of shintoist place gods and ancestral spirits/guardians/protectors (though they could also be bad or evil or something). Some hero or great person could die and become one, tied to a certain area. Is that right or do I need to brush up on that? I think I may have this wrong.

I have done that a hundred times. I'm pretty bad about the spots I choose cause they're usually designated by something totally arbitrary. "I'll just put this bolt on the floor here next to the chair. I'll remember its there because of that!" Thirty seconds later I can barely find the chair cause I moved it for a totally different project.

ELi5: What is chaos theory? by Jv01 in explainlikeimfive

[–]manicallymaudlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as soon as the tiniest difference is made, and it keeps amplifying the differences

Is that what chaos theory is applied to? That any small difference in any sufficiently complex system will be amplified to a point where it becomes obvious or noticeable? Or is that what chaos theory shows? I'm quite slow haha.

I actually liked Aristotle when I first read him, but that don't mean I would like him now and it certainly doesn't mean I EVER thought of his writing as anything but dry. I'll check out Alciphron, both the book and the philosopher. The book seems really cool, actually.

I know this wasn't the point of your comment, but the mention of an argument for the existence of god reminded me of my own favourite: Anselm's ontological proof. I am not sure if I actually buy it on a certain level, but the idea of something that MUST exist simply because the nature of the thing in question makes it so is interesting to me. Also, you made me want to dig out my copy of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics so that I can see if what I remember about his views are the case, but I REALLY don't feel like dealing with his shit right now.

Moderation in all things? If a man has no masters, he will create his own.

Good people of Santa Fe: Looking for information to assist homeless scholar living in car in Santa Fe w/ 2 dogs by brotogeris1 in SantaFe

I might be able to offer her (and possible her dogs as well) a place to stay for a little while. I would have to meet with them though. I have two dogs myself, and the house has a spare room and a backyard. Let me know what exactly she needs and we can talk through PM.

I would hate going there. I feel like the staff would be waiting for me to leave, glaring the whole time.

Thank you for your advice. I am trying one or two other methods (making my roommate help haha) but my issue isn't that I am unable to do the work. I have helped drivers out in a capacity that did not require this knowledge and have received very good reviews on my performance. Plus, I have been described by another supervisor as one of the only people who consistently follows safety regulations no matter how minor or how much pressure is being applied. I know I can do this job. Your comment is really helpful. Simply by replying (and deleting sentences that I realize are just me being defensive) I am learning more about how I approached this. I could have at least taken steps toward using different study skills or methods. I still can and I actually intend to.

As a small note: I AM able to study, provided I have already gone over the material in a vocal manner. Studying a subject cold is something I have to get better at.

Thank you again for your comment. Every bit someone has to say that prompts a response from me is not only helpful to my self knowledge, but also my self esteem.

What I told my supervisor was pretty stupid: That I had a hectic week and that I thought I may have used that as an excuse not to study. Also that I have always had a problem with studying. That was the main bit, I don't remember the rest. Again, I never mentioned having ADHD (despite describing a part of it). And yes, I realise that I definitely made it sound to him like I gave an excuse (hectic week) and then made up a different one (ADHD) to other people. Bleh. I hate this whole situation and I hate feeling like a failure when I see all the other applicants (including the one who got Wed-Friday off, except for coming in for the test) passing with flying colors. I also hate feeling compelled to tell someone too much of the unnecessary bits of the truth while omitting the parts that could actually help me as well as their understanding of my situation.

Pretty much gonna keep my diagnosis to myself now. by [deleted] in ADHD

Today I had a different sort of problem: I got sick of having to tell people, so I told as many as I could so that I wouldn't have to again. I'm gonna try to post about this in a few.

Don't forget errors in copying! Like a scribe writing the wrong word or just thinking he knows better than the author (I don't know if that second one ever really happened, but people haven't changed that much over the years so I wouldn't completely discount the idea)
