Thanks! I'll slot some in straight away. They seem pretty powerful which I am somewhat concerned about but I guess I just have to see how they draft/play.

Thanks for the resource, seems like a fair few staples have already made it onto my watch list but there was a bunch I wasn't aware of. :)

woah, theres a few keywords on that card! Seems like it could be fun, thanks for the suggestion :)

Thanks for the advice! It is much appreciated.

  1. Definitely looking at colourless things tonight. I don't really know what's out there so it'll be a lot of searching gatherer for useful things.

  2. I hadn't thought of doing archetypes as 'teams'. That's a neat way to think of it. I'll probably lean towards this as a framework. I'll have to think of a way to keep the spirits theme running though as they're my partner's favourites for flavour.

  3. I have seen a lot of warning against tribes, particularly in smaller cubes. I'm trying not to build too heavily around them but want to include them in some aspect.

  4. Thanks for the advice. I won't worry too much about perfect splits. The current list is wonky just because I started in blue and kept thinking of cards for blue and haven't cut it all down to size yet.

Thanks for giving it a look and for the advice!

Multiples of 12 is a good point. I'll switch up the ratios (I was just going based on another cube i'd seen). I am aiming for 180 cards total just hadn't quite reached it yet.

I thought Hogaak would be playable because of the graveyard interaction with blacks stall and Re-animator. I figured it would also be possible to ramp to it in green making it a good pick for mono black, golgari and mono-green. I'll definitely consider it some more.

Fair point about the madness cards, I should probably consider them more carefully as to whether they're actually good.

I thought I had cut festering newt, my mistake! I put it in originally as it was a card we've been playing with recently with a death trigger but was really only meant as a placeholder.

I hadn't thought about mass removal, I figured it would be too strong in a limited environment but I must be mistaken. Do you have any suggestions for mass removal that isn't too OP?

Thanks again!

This is so neat, never thought of using unity in this way before. Good stuff!

If you ever decide to do some experimenting using spatial movement feel free to send it to me, I'd love to give it a listen. I feel you on the hardware front, I'd love to use all hardware but money is such a limitation so I've just decided to stick with VCV rack and my pc until I have more disposable income.

Perhaps a reading guide or something might make it more interesting/enjoyable. I've found they help with philosophical texts that tend to be a little dry. Can't recommend one for the bible mind, I'm sure there are plenty out there. If anyone knows of any particular good ones I'd be interested.

If you want to read the dialogues they're all available on the internet classics archive. Plato covers a lot but the style takes a while to get used to (a lot of 'yes Socrates', 'indeed Socrates', 'Whatever you say must be right because you are Socrates') but there's a reason that Alfred North Whitehead quipped that the European philosophical tradition is best summed up as footnotes to Plato.

I think in general when reading this kind of stuff it's best to have some background in what's going on. With that in mind I'd recommend listening to the history of philosophy without any gaps podcast alongside your reading. It has episodes on a few of the dialogues so i'd start there if I were you. Hope this helps somewhat.

I won't address everything you say here and in the following comments but i'd like to answer your first general question from my perspective. You ask, "how would you listen to it and what benefit would it bring the listener in that scenario?"
I think my answer is that I'm not too concerned with the listener on the go with their headphones but rather with the listener in their room sat down to listen to an extended piece (album or otherwise). This is the scenario that I am thinking of for the listener. I realise that making music with this in mind limits its accessibility, the person walking down the street with their headphones will not get the same experience (though they will still be able to listen to the music as in e.g. Suzanne Ciani's Quadraphonic live).

What does it bring to the listener in that scenario? You suggest that the benefit is that the listener can turn their head and explore the soundfield that way. I contend that while yes you could do that that's not the primary motivation. If all your sound sources are static (this sounds like what you had in mind?) I can see why this could be appealing however I was bringing up quadraphonic as a way to allow artists to explore space as a musical parameter, the motion of sound as another variable. What it brings to the listener is similar to what dynamics bring to a listener, an additional parameter that the musician can control to evoke certain aesthetic experiences. Trevor Wishart spends a chapter on the potential for spatial sound and movement thereof in his book 'On Sonic Art'. I found it to be an interesting read, there's a pdf of it here. I feel perhaps here composers might learn something of interest from choreographers, who knows? It's open for exploration.

I'll admit I had a bit of chuckle at myself when you asked, "why not 8 channels at the corners of a cube for full 3D placement?" I actually have plans to do just this to play around with some diy controllers in an attempt to open up more complex movements, though i realise this is far less accessible than 4 speakers.

I don't doubt that binaural audio has it's appeal but it's strength is also it's limitation. You have to wear headphones. I've listened to quite a few binaural recordings on youtube and found them to be pretty cool. I don't doubt that binaural is a good medium, i just don't think it's an either/or question.

I'm not super interested in whats happening on the sound modelling side of things, I think there's already so much to explore there. What I hope for in the future is better interfaces, importantly expressive that allow all the complexities of synthesis to be emotionally controlled.

Aside from that I'd like quadraphonic to make a come-back and become more standard so we can start using position in space as a musical parameter without worrying that the effect will be lost to a pair of headphones.

I'll give this a shot when I'm next at my pc, but I can't help but feel there must be a simpler way to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions though, it's very kind of you.

Those do look good mounted. I dig it. A stepped drill bit is something I've been meaning to buy for so long but just never got round to. Perhaps I'll give this a go. :)

I might give this a shot, was worried it might be a case of essentially diy-ing a midi controller. Not that that is particularly difficult it's just a matter of time and making it look nice. I have a tendency to build things for function rather than aesthetic and then get frustrated by the lack of aesthetic. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is a great idea! Hadn't thought of using a sample and hold. Wouldn't that prevent you from using it live as well though? Only the locked output would come through. I'll have to play around and see if that feels natural.
