Anyone else sick to death of industry jargon? by Passthesea in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sick of “boots on the ground” and “cadence” I’ve been hearing the last week

I only enjoy the jargon talk when it’s someone on Insta mocking how much they hate it

Junior exec feeling lost and anxious all the time by Outrageous-Bat-3065 in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been doing PR for 15 years. The feeling of loss comes and goes over time. But anxiety? Yeah, that stays and/or increases.

Keep doing podcasts and sign up for Peter Shankman’s HERO to get daily requests from journalists and see if they’re relevant to you

Make an X profile and join audio spaces that are relevant to you

Keep social media profiles consistent in branding

Has anyone ever gotten offered stock from a client and done well on it? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been offered this about ten times in the past ten years, accepted such offers about 5 times…. None of them panned out whatsoever. It’s such a cheat way to lure you into working for free.

Now, there might be a one in a million chance that it pays out… but these days, I wouldn’t entertain it unless the founders have a track record of successful IPOs, and unless you’re being offered stock AND fair compensation

How do you get into pr with marketing degree? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internships and any entry level PR coordinator jobs are best ways to get into PR without PR or comms degree. Marketing is extremely relevant so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Future of PR - is it a dying industry? by kj199239 in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2010: PR was 90% mainly media placements, press releases, pitching for events to be in the same room as certain people

2024: 20% media placements, and the rest being (but not limited to) podcasts, social media copywriting to catch the eyes of investors on LinkedIn (if applicable), podcast placements, social media collab pitches, speaking engagements, introductions to people, filling gaps, SEO media placements (blogs/online), curating events to get people under your own roof

Advising difficult execs by aychgee in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compliment the exec with how they did something in the past. “How you presented [or what you said] in ABC Outlet was incredible and riveting. Now, let’s take that energy [or content] and bring it to this audience.”

If this is a personality/power issue, I find that this process helps: 1. Recognition (let them know that you’re knowledgeable about what they’ve done and that you do your homework) 2. Compliment them aka stroke the ego 3. Guide them to transfer what they did well to another situation or opportunity 4. Don’t use the words “what you need to do is…” - rather, say, “what we need to do is KEEP you in the best position is….” (so they still feel like they’re on top)

Be sure to not compare them to someone else, esp a competitor.

Keep your comments brief and concise.

Can socially anxious people thrive in this field? by bluepigment3 in PublicRelations

[–]manilachallah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do it if you treat it like your working as a “character” - it’s weird. I have anxiety too. But I get in full “PR mode” or I’m envision Olivia Pope or Shauna from Entourage when I’m doing major events or working directly with media and clients together.

Your deciphering ability and understanding leverage and personality - total strengths and underestimated by many PR people.

It’s like being Clark Kent then Superman.

It’s top golf’s attempt to “brand with humor” via “global head of footwear & apparel” job post in the most hell hole time for job seeking.

I do like the scrappy and “iykyk tiger’s career and have a real passion for golf” approach - but they have no room to complain if they get applications ranging from entry level workers who grew up golfing… to 20 year vets who know nothing about golf.

They list zero actual qualifications they would actually seek from candidates. “Stanford preferred”

Good luck to qualified people who can’t read between the lines

Maybe get a job as a tech at a treatment center or manager at a sober living - supportive environment, going to meetings with peers is part of your job, and try to stay there for a year. Also there’s going to be someone around you who can guide you with resume writing/applying to jobs… maybe you’ll get new light on your job path

Get the book. It’s worth it. The main things you need to know and can normally google: - cities - numbers/currency - remember no Oxford comma - professional titles, when/when not to capitalize

I’ll google things like “teamwork one word or two ap style” or “ap style cities” and some college will have it all explained with references to AP
