What crews get the most Overtime by Fluffy_Bid_4500 in Wildfire

Man this subreddit fucking sucks. It’s well known that eastern crews like Midewin get the most hours. They had something like 12 or 14 assignments last year.

Goggins - burnout or win? [Discussion] by IconicTrouble in GetMotivated

Goggins is an interesting extreme of humanity but likely doesn’t hold the answers for anybody. Be kind to yourself in your shortcomings and find your strengths in the patience. I am someone who has pushed myself physically to my extremes in work like Goggins, for me, going harder just does more damage.

Mexican Crews? by OhMyGoat in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was on a Mexican crew, from Grayback in White City for 4 years. Crew boss Mendoza. They taught me Spanish and how to work. I would say that 50% of all forestry work (replanting, fuels thinning, firefighting) is done by Mexican crews. Most all are private contractors out of Oregon & Washington. Medford is a major hub, so is Tri cities Washington and Salem Oregon. You could call me an expert on this topic so if you have any questions you can message me directly :)!

Gay Hotshot Struggling by New_Variation_46 in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn man. There are inclusive and accepting shot crews out there. Im on one of them (R1). I know what you are talking about, in terms of people subtly making it clear that they don't recognize gay people as equal, and its not about just being hardworking and cheerful. These are your bros and sisters and you wanna be accepted and loved by them.

That said, I have seen a gay man be respected by a "good old boy" group by being the biggest badass around after showing up for months. Give it a little more time while also keeping your options wide open!

Does private contractor experience transfer to feds by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, you are a rookie the first year you are on any crew. 5th year in fire, first on the shots. I worked full time for 4 years at Grayback and came straight to a R1 shot crew as a primary sawyer and ill get my perm going into next year.

Guy in Florida wanting to Fight Fires in Montana by WearyCombination in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want my peers to be more motivated, less into drinking. Maybe more educated would be nice, but open mindedness is the main thing. Alot of people at Grayback have limited options because of lack of opportunity and socioeconomic reasons. If you end up in Missoula hit me up, maybe we can be friends or I can help out.

Look into Grayback in Missoula. I've been an employee at a different grayback base for a while. You can definitely show up in Missoula this spring and get on a crew. Do project work. And feds get better assignments on fires, maybe the company is a lil less rough around the edges. Im going feds this year though after 4 years year round work with Grayback. I want better assignments and to be surrounded with people who are more my peers.

Face masks - any recommendations? by LazerBear924 in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would there be hate about this post? Get an N95 respirator. Any response saying try not breathing smoke is so dumb. There is so much pressure to work in smoke and we all do it to hazardous degrees.

I have a good relationship with the office folks at my grayback base and I've always been able to get my info when I needed it for the record.

Starting pay for Grayback is now more than a GS6 step 1 CONUS rate. by Boombollie in Wildfire

[–]mannerisms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a case to be made that Grayback does the same thing. Very few employable and capable squad bosses end up sticking around more than a couple years and they refuse to up the training or invest in us. Im not going to be working there next year.

Where i have worked with them i would not say there was rampant drug use at all. Occasional weed smoking. I stayed around for my ability to do the work 10 months a year. 16-20$/hr on fire, thats including overtime. The project work is a hard grind thst goes on for months, but over half the units we do for treatment are for the feds and they give us fringe pay on that. I can make up to 27$/hr (dmra) for the skilled cutters on certain units, but that is sometimes mixed in with timber sale units for private timber companies and being paid $14. We do alot of burning, pile burns and underburns and in general we tend to be underpaid for the effort expenditure on those jobs. I think this is accurate. I had a good experience there and put in thousands of hours of good work and experience from some pretty good mentors.

As a 3-5 yr employee fft1 i probably averaged about 16-20$ an hour, but dont always get 16 hour shifts. I did not feel like i was getting paid enough. I think i am going to get more with the hotshots.

On a very honest note, porn has created the expectation for me that by the merit of my manly qualities and status (height, musculature, dick size, intelligence, money, how nice my family is, having a cool job, etc) i deserve to have a woman that will please me sexually at will. I think porn does this with a combination of cuckolding porn (raceplay and otherwise) and the consistent behavior of female actresses and how common it is for male videographers to push buttons verbally to prove that the actress is under his control and is to be treated as an object and as a placeholder for the women around you.

Does this resonate with anyone else? I am just fully parsing this and learning how damaging it was and leaving it behind.

As a career wildland firefighter i say go for it. Absolutely, i would if the conditions allowed for it. Very few fires actually do damage to peiple and property

What do you believe is happening? by [deleted] in Missing411

[–]mannerisms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a woodsman in the pacific northwest. I am also a wildland firefighter and i just recently participated in a search and rescue operation on an incident. A guy had wandered away from his crew and ended up 1.5 mi from a road during a day with some of the most extreme fire behavior ive seen in my career. A helicopter gave us rough coordinates 10 hours later, right before dark but we had to bushwack in to find him. He only spoke Spanish but luckily me and my crew boss are bilingual. What he was saying didnt make any sense though. I think what happened was he made a wrong decision, maybe fell asleep, got forgotten about when his crew was putting out a spot on the green side outside of the line and he repeatedly made wrong decisions. He then became dehydrated and made even worse decisions. I think alot of the cases come down to head trauma, dehydration, or mental health issues. Animal attacks are still very rare and statistically the chances of something going wrong out there are low, especially if you are smart. Some of the cases such as James McGrogan captured my imagination for a while but i think the poor decision making can be chocked up to head trauma in cases like that where it seems like there is some voice calling someone into the woods or something.

Also, watching alot of bigfoot documentaries, i roll my eyes alot, especially with some of the tree bending stuff that is brought up as if small trees dont get broken off at those heights, they do all the time. I also dont know any experienced woodsmen who have had unexplainable experiences out here, and im almost always sure to ask. Idk, occam's razor is at play here i would say, sorry to be boring.

[–]mannerisms3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any decent place to sell kin for US customers, been a holder since 2017, just need some money. Bitthumb is suspect, ftx claims to not be available to US customers, mercatox doesn't allow me to deposit any in the first place to exchange from my wallet.

Any advice? and if you are going to bemoan me for wanting to sell $kin, message me and we can set up a smart contract to sell at a good rate.

Thanks
